  • May be my eyes were tricking me, but the little girl might have ended up with the wrong answer here...

I read 99,088 on her soroban, not 99,084 which is the correct result.

  • wow, that little girl was speedy! It was nice how came and challenged her! Good job to you both!

  • She'll be doing her taxes in like 2 minutes.

  • You beat 2 of my gr 6/7 classes. and me three times! Nice! We are building our right now!

  • I can see how the abacus can make things easier; get good at plugging in the correct numbers and the result will be the outcome. Not much remembering would be needed. Can anyone tell me what that top row of singles is used for?

  • That kid lost me......

  • My mom is an accountant who lives on a calculator, gave her the numbers and she did the whole lot in 7 seconds (yes she is that fast)

  • WHATS THE HIGHEST LEVEL

  • How does Soroban work?

I remember having one as a child but I just turned it upside down and rolled stuff on it.

  • 很好

  • 很好

  • 3rd time i got it. And did it by 1 secound faster! Woo hoo and the answer was right! Though she is defintely a VERY SMART Girl! Well done for her learning the Abacus! It is not very hard. Im sure there is a howto video you should try it.

  • @marafi

u probalby just made it faster because you already "knew" the numbers from your first two attempts.

she beat me as well, although i use the calculator every day...

    just amazing

  • I got it same time. Though I GOT THE ANSWER WRONG! LOL Though brilliant! That girl is defintely a genius! Many thanks for the videos!

  • Amazing, I was only up to the 5th number by the time she finished. Her handwriting is exceptional too. I would be a very proud teacher if she was my student.

  • she was "7=" faster :o)

  • ............. . . . wow.

  • F*CK YEAH I made it just in time :D 99,084

  • Even though I completed it 3 seconds sooner on my first try, I was more amazed when I saw how large the numbers were. If this thing does powers and multiplication just as easily, then I'm taking up a new calculator. Now would they allow this to be used on a standardized test in the US for college entrance exams...

  • I'm pathetically proud that she only beat me by about 2 seconds... then again, I haven't dedicated time to either the abacus or the number pad... though I'm willing to bet that someone using a numberpad who spent the same study time as someone learning how to use the abacus, the numberpad would win. HOWEVER, if all power was lost... 50 years later, the abacus would win due to it's 0 battery cost :)

  • Astonishing. No chance.

I sent this video to a friend of mine who ist VERY good in math and VERY fast with the calculator. He succeeded only after a few tries.

  • 0:11

  • She beat by at least 10~15 seconds... Calculators aren't that easy anyway, I keep messing up with +/- signs. That cost me usually 2~3 seconds.

  • haha! so cool. ^_^

  • I beat her by about just one second, but I was a chartered accountant, so I can type numeric keys very fast. That girl is amazing!

  • Wtf, I couldn't beat it with a calculator.

  • On what basis does it calculates? (4,6) because using 10 isn't really the best choice for simple arithmetics effectiveness.

  • i didnt even get half way done lol

  • Man is she quick. I had one number to input to go when she finished and due to my major I use my calculator pretty much every day. Props. I might have to look into using a soroban for simple arithmetic operations.

  • wow...i feel showed up by a 9 year old....

  • that was crazy

  • getting minorly owned. but props to her.

  • you are really really hopeless on that calculator... +P

I used to learn that, but now... I think I have forgotten everything...

all I know the one bead on top is 5 units... the 4 beads below are single units each of total 4...

  • i was only 2 numbers away! sadly i messed up pressing the "-", yeah i might have tied :)

  • Around 30 years ago...

abacus calculation and penmanship were very popular lesson in our childhood.

    but now...

keyboard typing became more important things than abacus calculation.

    p(´⌒`q)

  • I failed hard! :D

  • awesome !! i want one ! she was faster than me on computer calculator :D

  • and thats why i suck at math

  • Nice ^_^

  • o_O i got to 70,862 when u said stop lol wow fast

  • I lost...I think we should use these things in school, but maybe we could get a problem with trigonometric functions :DD

  • damn I lost hahahaha she is awesome

  • I'm getting dizzy of watching this xD

  • lol i cant beat hthat one lol... maybe with some trainning but dude^^

  • nice ^^

    she beat me :P

  • nice ^^

  • Wow, I didn't think anyone could use those!

  • @cheerleader256

I have made 500 videos where I am not just talking in my car...

    but thanks for the advice.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom im sorry i honestly didnt mean to sound like a b!tch!

i meant i just really enjoy your videos where i get to see/do things like this.

    sorry!

    love your videos!

  • lol. I laughed at you for getting beat by a 9 year old girl on an abacus. Then I stepped up to the challenge and got owned so hard!

  • Comment removed

  • Happy new year guys! well a little late jan 2nd 11 but whoc ares right? woot!

  • I got finished at the same time using the keys on the computer in the calculator program but with more complex problems the abacus would beat out

  • HELL YESS IT TOOK ME 20 TRIES BUT I DID IT!

I figured out how she did it. She memories at least 3 of the row of numbers and types them in. I am guessing you have to have a fast and real good memory.

  • DAMN THAT LITTLE GIRL!!!!!!

I just need one second, I will keep trying till it's day light!

  • She's quick that's for sure! She beat me by a long shot.

  • oh, come on, here in Serbia kids her age can do that without even using anything! I was applauded back in England after doing any mathematics problem without using a calculator in seconds, and I always had an F in math!

  • never seen one oif them befor would like to know how it works.

  • wow, i tried and only got to fourth sequence of numbers. she is fast. O.o!!

    Happy New Year!!

  • Omg that is so amazing. Kinda unnecessary(?) but a very cool skill.

  • hardcore

  • hardcore

  • she is cute!

  • Is this something she learned in school? maybe they should teach everywhere

  • amazing... just amazing...

  • @waltermh111 actually, the beauty of the soroban (and other abaci? abacuses?) is that, after enough practice, it takes very little thinking. Skilled users only really need to know the compliment of 10 (which is very basic subtraction) as they follow it through, similar to how you have to remember to carry the 1 when adding/subtracting on paper. Learning to use it effectively takes time and practice, but afterwards, the idea is to do it as mindlessly as possible (because that's faster).

  • @t3hpyr0x my child will only use a calculator for VERY complex things

  • WOW! She is fast!

  • this is better than a calculator!

  • Wow, she is awesome at that thing. I'm embarrassed.

  • She is amazing!!

  • I failed miserably! =)

  • video feed back i suck i actually lost 0_0

  • That's awesome! She bet me though haha!!

  • I was adding 5273 when she finished :P That's amazing, I'm sure using an abacus is a great brain workout.

  • And victory goes to the girl! GIRL POWER :)

  • I didnt even get past typing the third number D:

  • Lol, she beated me by 2-3 seconds. But yea I agree, an expert abacus user can be 2-3 times faster than anyone on a calculator. And I heard the highest level is when you don't even need the equipment infront of you, and you can just do the calculations in the air by mimicking the usage of the abacus with your fingers. Sooo crazy, wish I've known this 10 years ago, but now I'm probably too old to start learning.

  • Wooah! Magic! :E

  • aww such a cute smart kid lol

  • Very cool video.

  • Hah, piece of cake! I was finished in two seconds after I changed it to 2:26.

  • @SilentDeath901 Wait... I think I just called myself an idiot.

  • oh snap. if i had my favorite calculator i think i might stand a chance but she's quick.

  • Nice video!

  • she crushed you.! awesome vid as always

  • i lose :(

  • but it cannot do \ and x

in chinese we call it 珠算

  • Genius child. *0*

I'm so inferior at math and I'm college age, it's depressing... TT___TT

  • :o) Wow

  • I was close, but wow, that's pretty good lol

  • DAMN! I only needed 3 more numbers..

  • nvm... she just wrecked me and i never even looked at the calculator ><

  • baahahah, it totally looks like a master abacus user vs an amateur calculator user =p

  • Are you an teacher there?

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom

    SWEET! ^.^

  • Jeebus!! It took me like 5 seconds after she got done... She's fast~~ That's amazing. Those things look really cool to use. I want to learn how to now. >w<

  • ohh i learned that in kindergarden but i 4got how...

  • I got ownd NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • 1st attempt: I used one finger and lost/

2nd attempt: 2 fingers and barely beat her.

  • she is an abacus devil

i couldn t beat her jajajajaj

  • I got to the -70???. ...

  • i feel like there's a hole in my life because I ignored math all my life and my high school let me graduate without doing anything over grade 7. I just can't calculate numbers without getting lost.

  • lol i didnt even get passed the third set

  • damn i got smoked!

  • I really need to get out of the retail business.. I beat her with the calc the computer comes with.. =(

  • @SpeedyThaSnail I beat her with the computer calculator as well, but I think she would beat me if I used an actual calculator. LOL!

  • She beat me! : (

  • You should do a New Years Eve video about how you celebrated in Japan, they show the big celebration on TV, but your view would be cool to see. :)

  • I didn't bother to fire up my calculator. When I was younger there was a a Japanese kid in my math class who would destroy us with an abacus. I'm fairly young so it was in the days when we were allowed first start using calculators in school. He would blow through the work and be looking around while the rest of us Forrest Gumped our way through it.

  • she creamed me! i was 3/4 way done. wow. thats amazing. she is so fast. thanks for this video it was really cool.

  • lolwut

  • Thats incredible!!! xD I had just gotten though with -70,862!! lol I'd just love to bring something like that to my Algebra 2 and have everybody laugh at me and then be finished 20 minutes before them haha :D

  • I love this one! great work and happy new year my friend. yours earl

  • She totally beat me. I wish I was smart :'(

  • jesus i only managed to get to subtracting -9354 when she finished... -.-

  • I tried using a computer calculator, which I'm pretty fast with.

When she was done, I had two numbers left to add.

    Pretty impressive!

  • wow im only half way there

  • WOW ! I want an abacus.

  • Wow (O_o)

  • yeah, i suck. couldn't beat her. ><

    anywho, happy new year! <3

  • Thanks for all the great videos in 2010. Happy, Happy New Year to you and looking forward to your 2011 videos from Japan. :)

  • If she does this for fun, good for her, but if they make her learn this at school, what an amazingly horrible waste of time.

  • @blahk04 in Japan lots of young kids actually take soroban lessons outside of school as extracurricular activity. Just like you would go to piano lessons or swimming lessons. ^ o ^

  • @xoxMoonPopxox not really, people swim in the real world all the time, and the ultimate goal would be an Olympic medal. Piano is used to create beautiful music and you could become the next Chopin. Abacus on the other hand will get you nowhere and will never be useful in anyway whatsoever. The best you could get out of it is brain exercise.

  • @blahk04 but eventually they get so good at soroban that they can see it in their heads while calculating, so they don't even need it anymore; they're just really fast at doing math in their heads. That becomes very helpful later on in life.

  • smart kid. i only got half way through

  • I know "how" to use an abacus, but that is just amazing. I'd never be able to use one with such precision or speed. That girl is awesome. Haha.

  • and she's better than i am at math. (i'm 19).

  • damn that girl is amazing. damn you japan with your superhuman powers.

  • She's adorable! :D No worries man we still love you even if you did loose to a 9 year old genius ;)

  • She beat me when i used the calculator but i try a second time in my head and then i beat her.

  • She beat me to the sum... hehe.

  • i won

    (copy+paste FTW)

  • She beat me! D;

  • i got halfway through with the windows calculator, lol

  • It's actually quite easy when you get the hang of it. Definitely helped me throughout my elementary/middle school years for math.

  • I just got totally and unequivocally owned by a 9 year old with an abacus. That's amazing. Let me go and get my dunce cap.

  • omg that was almost as fast as actually just reading the numbers... unbelievable.

  • Woahhh, I used my calculator but I was only half the way. Interesting to see this, thank you.

  • damn shes fast :))

i actually did it for like 7 times but still ... :))

  • awesome

  • Wow.

  • happy new year guys. :D

  • Haha, I actually pulled out my calculator xD

I had three numbers left when time was up, she's good!

  • I beat her, but only by a second or so. she's reallly fast haha

  • Cute girl! Looked so happy when she beat you too!

  • i could only tie her >.< and if i did it too fast i made mistakes...

  • 19065, 71802, 34190, and then she won. XD

  • btw

I like how you said "fastahhh" @ 1:00

    XDDD

  • @lich610 hahaha i love when it do that

  • @mortdepeur13

the guy that I saw using the abacus was actually Chinese not Japanese

    Happy New Year!!

    :DDD

  • japanese are soo smart

  • wow so awesome!!

I remembered this store where I use to live and the cashier use abacus instead of a calculator

when he use it it was like show and all I hear is "tick tick tick tick..." and he's done

  • Haha i feel so bad right now. I actually forgot how to use those XD

  • we need to know how that works

  • where did you find this girl? thats pretty amazing (:

  • Happy New Year and keep those videos coming!

  • wow.....

  • I LOST!!!

  • dang she is so fast T_T i tried doing it couple of times and i wasn't able to reach even to the half of the numbers >.< !

  • omg thats fast! i coulnt enter the numbers quick enough! lol id seen and heard of those things before, but i had no idea it could be used so quickly

  • i thought scientific calculator would beat her but NO

  • wow... she should be included in the next Microsoft operating system

  • dang.

  • wow im impressed!

  • @TheGstein: Me too! :0

  • when i was her age, all i cared about was yugioh and pokemon. lmao thats why i will be lucky to work at mc dees and shel prolly be succesfull tee hee

  • omg hahahaha that child is ganna be the cure for cancer lol

  • First time: She beat me. >.<

Second time: I finished but got the wrong answer. Dx

Third time: Tied and got correct answer. :D

She's really good! I think I tried to learn how to use an abacus when I was younger, but I never understood it. Thanks for the video and happy new year!

  • the kid was amazing

  • awesome stuff!! remember using those in the old days in Communist Romania when I was little.

    Happy New Year!!

  • O_O

  • she is awsome, do here parents asker her to help with the taxes? hah
