I was stationed there from '64 thru '65 -- snow looks the same. Then PCS'd to Goose Bay --- the fun never ended!
Came back for a visit just after closing --- very strainge feeling - like the lights had just been turned out. I will miss everyone, and that short, intense time.
I lived there from 8th grade to 10th grade, back in the early 60's .. on base .. school in Limestone. I remember walking through walls of snow in front of our house .. and how when it melted in the spring it would be in the 40s when we would put on shorts .. the earth would turn into mud for awhile. Since then, I lived in snow only one ore time .. Long Island .. then went to Florida and now I'm in California .. LOL
My Dad was stationed at Loring when I was a kid and actually worked in that hanger. I can remember going to the air shows in front of it in the early 80s. Giant B-52s parked out front. One year a guy repelled (sp?) from the top and I remember thinking how cool that was.
I live right next to this place, wow what a snowy winter it was last year. hopefully this ones a little less harsh! doesn't look so good with how cold it is already, though!
Nice reflection of the Arch Hanger; the tail door used to fall out on the north side.
I had to leave my housing unit via the 2nd floor window, to shovel snow away front the front door. The Arch Hanger was the only place we could fully enclosed a bomber without the tail sticking out.
I was hoping to see the "Ball Park" area and DOCK #25 but the north end of the base may be long gone for newer structures? My years; 1968-1971 and 1973-1975 42nd Bomb Wing.
Thanks for the memories, I was assigned to Loring from Feb 70 - Aug 72, worked at the Hq 42nd Combat Support/DA Special Orders Section. Also worked at the Base Bowling Alley as Desk Night Manager. Always had tons of snow the 2 1/2 winters that I was there. Remember this B-52 hangar - thanks for the memories.
The building accross from the Arch Hanger was the Jet Engine shop. The set of windows at the right hand corner was the Jet Engine Conditioning section of the Jet Shop which was my duty section from February of 1976 to December of 1977. This is were the flight line troops worked from when the base was active. Thanks for the look.
Loring AFB is now the 'Loring Commerce Centre'. What you thought was the fire station is 'Engine build up'. The fire station is (as you was standing) behind the arch hanger.
i used to live on manser drive just a short drive from there. my step dad was the boss in the arch hangar. its owned by telford aviation out of bangor. the smaller building across from it used to be or still is part of the maine military authority. the smaller hanger type building is used for storage. it used to be an engine test facility. The 2 things in the fog are smokestacks from the old base heating plant.
