What would American pollution be without the EPA? I shudder to think.

I agree, the problem is that our current 2 party system is wrongfully unfair toward Third party candidates. Greed, ignorance and arrogance got us here. Can that change, sure, but it needs to happen from the bottom up, not the other way around. More government is never the solution.

Absolutely true, Mr. Btbblack, however, communication in the general culture no longer happens around the pickle barrel at the general store. The television and magazines tell people that the most important form of social interaction is competitive consumption. In the 1950's the average middle management types pulled off the impossible. They all had a sartorial peace treaty. The vast majority wore gray flannel suits. Often they only owned two suits. But the hippies put a end to this.

I totally disagree with regards to the intelligence and foresight of the consumer with regards to the future of a country. Ask the average American motorist if he wants to pay more gas taxes; the answer is a resounding no, in a country that only produces 1/3 of its oil. Look at countries in Europe and Japan that have to import all their oil, they all drive small cars. Ask the average American if this is a good idea and he'll say yes, just one problem, how do I get my neighbour to drive one.

So, American Automakers have have been in bed with the oil companies and government for years, building vehicles that are less efficient and bottom line crap. The fact that they are all really struggling shows the free market/consumers have decided not to purchase their products. The problem now becomes our government stepping in and not allowing them to fail. Competition is illiminated and a new, better company, and better product that the market demands is not allowed to see the light of day.

I would respectfully disagree that the government is by and large in bed with the auto companies. One of the conditions for the auto bailout (and I would agree that they shouldn't be bailed out) that many suggested is that they drop the ongoing lawsuits they have with various state governments regarding emissions etc... Government has also imposed crash standards and cafe standards on car companies which they complained vociferously about.

Another aspect of positive government involvement in the U.S. auto industry is forcing they to make a portion of their models efficient. Now, these models are less popular with the public so they are often sold a slight loss. Whereas giant gas sucking SUV's are very popular (half of all vehicle sales) and have astounding profit margins for the big three. The result of this is that the motorist who decides to make the patriotic decision to drive small car gets a subsidy.

And yes, most folks are not overyly intelligent, but the market works. Here's another example other than the car companies. Let's say company X makes water bottles for really cheap. Studies come out that the material they use is contaminated water and causing growth defects in babies. Media function properly and reports the stories. Consumers by in large stop purchasing their bottles. Company goes out of business. New company comes along who's water bottles improve water quality.

Edward Prescott(a nobelist) was in my country(Finland) in July(yes, 2008) talking about how the recession in the US was shallow and that the "fundamentals were fine"(I'm not kidding). I must say, after that and Krugman my respect for the Nobel Prize in Economics has gone down quite a lot.
