I think he did the right thing in raising her non-traditionally.. too many parents assume that girls like all of the things mentioned above because they've been traditionally forced onto girls. Ellie can make her own decisions.
This show was loosely based on Li'l Abner. And, if you can find the movie, Donna was in it. This show makes more sense than a lot of the garbage that's on today.
