  • Great surf movie. I saw it on Showtime (believe it or not) in the late 70's.

Lee Purcell was always freaking hot!

  • I guess you could say this movie is a favorite of mine..and yet, I've never seen it. I'm acquainted with the story because I read the book in high school numerous times. It was a favorite of mine and I still have that copy. Growing up in the Mid-west, I never had the chance to ride a wave until I was in my mid thirties in Florida. Some surfers suggested boogie boarding and taught me the basics. I finally experienced the sensation and enjoyed it.

  • this movie influenced my choice of surfing ..Fun movie :'D

  • This Movie Flop when it First came out on the Box Office at 1978 But I just saw this Movie on the Weekend on DVD And all I can say is This Movie ROCKS Big time for me. It's the Best Surf movie after Endless Summer Dude.

  • They just showed the movie here in L.A. and they had a Q&A session with William Katt and Peter Townend.

  • @titostacos I would have killed to be there..

  • @msinthrop I was an extra in the crowd scene inside the induction center, the scene with Robert Englund.

  • @titostacos Serious?? How cool was that? Im 50 and i always feel like a teenager back in Huntington Beach in the 70's seeing this film. Any interesting stories you can share from your experience on the film?

  • I surf... this movie ment the world to us.. the mythology they created has real meaning today... as we see men seeking their own lives and adventures being exploited and killed off by the corporate machine.

  • Always wanted to surf a wave like this 2:16

    I can't make it.. i can't make it!!!!!!!!!!

  • "That's just the lemon next to the pie; it's gonna get bigger."

One of the best films I have in my collection. Oh yeah, it has surfing in it too. Bonus.

  • I saw this when I was in high school when first it came out. It's a tad ironic that Jan Michael Vincent played an alcoholic surf star (Matt Johnson) only to become a tragic alcoholic himself in real life.

I was surfing in San Onofre in the very early 1980's and saw him with a few of his buddies (Gregory Harrison being one) and man, they could surf pretty good.

I sort of idolized him as he said that he acted to make money so he could travel the world and surf.

  • Matts wife is the hottest babe ever filmed.

  • A shitty, awful movie. John Milius at his self-mythologizing worse.

  • Still my favourite move ever.......25 yrears after i first saw it

  • some marry, some die

  • @shannnnon : What's the difference? *_*

  • This brilliant time piece flew 6 miles over the moron public's head. It tanked at the box office but it remains as the best "Coming Of Age" film that I've ever seen.

  • yes it did, just like "valley girl"

"baby it's you" "box of moonlight" on and on.

  • Ive not seen this film since the early eightys but still remember it well.. Its rollercoaster ride of emotions.. still crying today. ;-)

  • awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee movie

  • Dude!! I love surfing movie cuz I'ma surfer soooo

  • this looks hella good

  • Agreed.

  • best movie ever

  • I just got a bear board and it surfs great. It's a fat arse wombat. :)

  • and if it wasn't me I don't know who it could have been but I never, and I repeat never, pissed in your steam iron

  • It is a shame about Jan Michael....he was soo good in this.

  • It isn't just a "surf movie"... it's a wonderful elegy about friendship and youth. Anyway the surf scenes are very beautiful.

    Great movie.

  • I just may have to invest and actually watch this film.

  • My friends and I were extras in the scene at the draft board. We had to stand around in our underwear for about twelve hours...

  • wow, your lucky. i'd have paid good money to be an extra in that film. it's one of my all time favourites. where abouts did they shoot that scene for the draft?

  • I was around 16 or 17 when this came out in the late 70's. Man that was one cool movie for surfers. Not a typical "surf flick" but a good fictional story. Years later, here comes Mavericks. Who would ever guess California could produce such a wave.

  • if you didn't know already, the writer/director of this movie went on to write Apocolypse Now, Dirty Harry, Jaws, etc. John Milius. Brilliant mind and crazy like a fox. IMO, very Hunter S. Thompson-esque in his writing and belifs.

  • Milius´ contribution to Jaws was the brief but brilliant Indianapolis monologue, did milius write ´crazy like a fox´ that was a pile of shit.

  • this must be the best surf movie evermade
