I, too think this the best P and P made! I very much disliked the later version and could not stand the dry voice of the actress who played Elizabeth in that one.
she seemed stiff and old and very unlike the playful Elizabeth. Garvie was a wonderful Elizabeth! Rintoul was a perfect Darcy. My only disappointment with this version is that it was too short! I wish it was twice a long! Four hours was simply not enough!
I think Rintoul is perfect as Darcy. He certainly would have been very stiff and supercilious just as Rintoul plays him.he is described that way in the book. Let's remember it was a VERY formal era and he was an arisocrat from one of the most important families in Britain. Firth is probably more attractive to modern tastes but i think his portrayal is less realistic. i always think of Rintoul when I read the book.
I too rather love this version and fear it to be under-appreciated. While Rintoul is a bit waxen in sone scenes I think his softening to Elizabeth and eventual delight in her is compelling for that reason.
Agree! Watched it when it was shown in Singapore in 1981 and never forgot both lead actor & actress. I think it is so far the best version todate. Rest of cast was also wonderful. Elizabeth Garvie had such expressive eyes and lively expression, which perfectly personified E Bennett's vivaciousness. And my friends swooned over D Rintoul's Mr Darcy. Wonder where I can get the DVD for this version?
I finally saw this version & disagree that it is the best. I find Rintoul's Darcy flat, wearing one expression most of the time. I don't think Austen portrayed him as such a caricature. Firth supplies a depth of emotions & reactions, a complexity missing in this version,That said, this is far better than the 2005 movie which other than the settings is painful to watch.
one of the main reasons people don't know about this fantasic adaption is because the bbc deleted it from their catalogue. the bbc video is very hard to find, but you can get it on a region 1 dvd, but the disc is a flipper.
What a wonderful tribute you've created! Thank you for sharing!
I like this adaptation very much and although I'm a huge fan of P&P 95 I must admit that David Rintoul did the best interpretation of Darcy I've seen so far! He's exactly as I imagined Mr Darcy while reading the book. Imo, Colin Firth comes very close, but Rintoul just nails it! And I enjoyed both the performances of Elizabeth Garvie and Jennifer Ehle likewise. All in all, both adaptations are a joy to watch!
I watched this when it was first broadcast in I think 1980. It's still my favourite dramatisation of the novel. The adaptation by Fay Weldon is first class - very close to the novel's dialogue. And the cast is perfection.
I watched when I was in high school and I just ordered and rewatched it. It is so damn good. It is exactly the way jane Austen imagined it to be. I love^1000 it!!! This is GREAT LITERATURE! In a way, I'm nostalgic for it because it reminds me of the GREAT Britain that it used to be, Britain seems to have gone down. :(
This is a lovely version of PP. Lizzie is great & Darcy 'improves on further acquaintance'! Some of the more important scenes ie 2nd proposal & elopement story better done & more satisfying. I found them poor in 95 version though I love Colin & 95 clearly had a bigger budget. Bennet family really good too especially parents. some really good one liners!
Sono daccordo, questa versione è ben fatta e rispondente ai personaggi del libro. Anche io amo COlin del 1995 ma secondo me questo Darcy ha il vero atteggiamento superbo e rigido pensato dalla Austen.
It's amazing, most people don't even know about this version of Pride and Prejudice, but I believe it is by far the best! Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul are the best Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy!
Agree, and what about the wonderful Lady Cathrine of Judy Parfit and Mrs Bennet she too was just completely wonderful. Mr Collins simply revolting. Such a good cast.
You are entirely correct, CoreCullenCrazy. David Rintoul absolutely nailed the character of the handsome, proud & haughty Mr. Darcy as written by Jane Austen. Elizabeth Garvie was also excellent as Elizabeth Bennet. To my mind, however, the best piece of acting was by Judy Parfitt as Lady Catherine De Burgh. The screenplay by Fay Weldon [& Austen], sets & period costumes are also outstanding & anyone who has never seen it should go out & buy it. They will not be dissappointed, as you well know.
Just one question, the scenes at 0:52 and 1:08. Did you make those using final cut express 4? If so, how? Sorry, I would just appreciate some help with final cut express 4.0. Thanks!
The parterres at Longbourne always look delightful with the late Summer bloom, and the sweet melancholy that the faint aroma of autumn brings to the surrounding nature, and your cousins of course are always stimulating company for a gentleman.
Has the dance fatigued you? Would you care for some refreshment ,or are you bound for the next quadrille?
It is a truth universally acknowledged that this 1980 adaptation is the best yet made for television. The acting is crisp and unselfconcious, Miss Weldon's screenplay was sympathetic to the grammatical cadences of the novel's dialogue, and the subtle ambience of unhurried propriety and quiet longing that denoted the life of many a well-to-do young Regency lady was impeccably suggested. No petulant leaps into ponds or leavened bosoms needed here to titillate the (not as yet?) jaded viewer..
Mr Darcy, like Mr Wickham, is at a time of life when engagements and friends are continually increasing. His party are to be away to Scarborough and thence forward to Pemberley. That place I hear (From Mrs Kemp who's cousin once took tea there) has the finest parkland in Derbyshire and the house has a particularly gracious aspect.
Will you be wintering in Bath or remaining with your sisters in Hertfordshire?
I wish I could visit Pemberley and take a look at this splendid parkland but I´m afraid I must content myself with humble Hertfordshire and maybe take a tea with Sir Wiliam instead.
That is fortuitous Miss Cathy, for my cousin Captain Lawrence has a residence in the village of Pemberley. Should your travels take you there, I am sure an introduction can be procured, for he is truly the most affable of gentlemen.
In the meantime - and as this most enjoyable of dances is ending and possibly your card is full for the evening - may I anticipate the pleasure of seeing you again at Mrs Phillips salon thursday next for whist, and your charming company?
Absolutely the best dramatisation of P&P ever. The casting was superb.Whenever I re-read the book I picture these fine actors.Got it on ye olde video it still looks amazing today. Thanks for this. Happens to be my favourite music too!!
This is my all time favourite version of P+P, dramatized by Fay Weldon - even though the scenery is a bit wobbly in places, you can see a modern galvanized steel barn on their journey to Pemberley, it detracts not, so brilliantly is the charm and essence of the origin manifested. Thanks for posting.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I love this version, it is the very best! i so enjoyed watching it in 1980, I recall it so well. I have been trying to get a copy of it, when I tried to get it on video a while back all anyone wanted to know about was the Colin Firth version. This is superb, I think David Rintoul was an excellent Darcy, and Eliazabeth Garvie was wonderful as Elizabeth.
very nice video, altough I did not see this version I dare to say it seems to me Colin Firth is the best Mr. Darcy ever seen after the version of 1940 with the always great Sir Laurence Olivier!
@spyked1 Colin Firth was OK. But other than being more of a modernistic 'heartthrob' type, he has nothing on Rintoul. Rintoul is more aristocratic in air and appearance, and his "coming out" is far more surprising (and therefore, more effective,) than Firths Darcy. Even if you had no prior knowledge of the plot you could see Firth smoldering from day 1. Rintoul and this whole version are closer to the book, with all due respect; as both versions have their highs and lows.
You have a very good point, Rintoul did come over more sullen and withdrawn as a love interest like the book even when the signs of softening up were there, i personally prefer this version. The Bennet family, Charlotte Lucus, costumes and the settings indoor and out are excellent and are as good as version ever been made.
By the way, I just watched this whole series on Netflix streaming! So great to see it again.
