And He had new wants in life. When your a young adult you want to have fun and make money and find a career for yourself. When your settled in a career you often want a family to give your love and wealth to. Then when your children are all grown up, you want to do things again travel and see the world with your significant other. And then when you finally get really old there's a point where you just want to rest and have peace and quiet (at least for some). But he still cared for the tree.
That was good, that was really good. I cried soo bad. at the end, especially in thinking how much good parents give and care and love soo much and soo well. That was soo good and soo bittersweet. it took me to be an adult to truly understand and cry over this story. it was soo good. And to me the boy wasn't being greedy, he was being truthful. He cared about the tree but he was at a new stage in his life and as an adult you have an imagination but not as wild as a childs to play with a tree.
Yeah, everyone who says they hate the boy... you probably ARE or were that boy. You probably have yelled at your parents for not buying you an iPhone, not paying for your entire spring break trip in Cancun, not refilling your bank account when you run out at college because you spent it all on booze and sorority dues, etc. You've probably even yelled at them for no reason at all except for that you are just an insufferable brat. So shut your mouths.
dont say u hate the boy. this is for all the mamas out there. the one person u can always rely on is ur mama. no matter what ur mama will be ther for u and she wants u to be happy more then nething. this is for all the unconditional love our mamas give us thru thick and thin, and even though we dont deserve it. love you mama <3
It's supposed to be about a loving parent giving up everything so his or her child can be happy. And yeah, the boy may come off as selfish but as long as he was happy, so was the tree. And that's how it is in real life. All a parent wants is for the child to be happy.
Don't read this story to your kids or they'll turn out just like me; Giving up everything for the sake of people who don't care, people who're just out to see what they can get from you and when you have nothing left to give, you're garbage to them.
Reminds me of my relationship with God. He is so good and self-sacrificing to me, yet I am greedy and selfish and use Him. But after running after the things of the world, I'll come back and find acceptance and love, despite my ways. He will be happy when I return.
It's a brilliant way of showing that you don't have to look everywhere for happiness, there's always something there right in front of you that will give you happiness......kinda makes you think about your life haha
If you've heard the song "Kids" by MGMT and listened to the lyrics, maybe you'll understand what the song stands for now. The song seems to be based off this book.
Well...there's another way of looking at it. We might think that the tree should be angry, and demand payment, bu we have to understand that the tree wants very little, other than for the boy to be happy. Giving what she could made the tree happy, and isn't that what matters in the end? Happiness? And not wealth, as we can see from the boy.
I feel you have nothing to apologize for. This is as true to the original as I have seen. The music, colors and female voice adds a different but beautiful take on the original presentation. I just wish the old man could die at the tree, return to the earth around the tree and give back what the tree had given him.
@Jessiesnow100 In the end, the greedy boy returns to the tree, in this version, to stay with the tree through the end to die and return to the earth and feed the tree so it can begin the growing process once again, redeeming him
@Jessiesnow100 i agree all he cared was about himself he didn't care about the tree after he was a little kid he just wanted what he wanted and didn't care about the tree after he grew up.... the 1 dislike is the boy because after it was a stump i bet he wanted something else and he got mad because the stump couldn't give anything to him...stupid boy...and i always found it funny they still called him a boy even though he was i dunno like 70 or higher looking in the last few pages.
@Jessiesnow100 ikr...SNIFF i would cherish a friend like that Dx i watched these over and over (since i cant go to the library) and i have nothing to do no real friends the giving tree kept on giving and giving until it was a stump the tree gave him happyness then it gave him a house he took his branches he asked for a boat and took its trunk then he was old and the tree was nothing but a stump and it kept giving Dx!!!! i would love and cherish friend that cared Dx
My grandfather gave me this book back in the 70's. I have always loved this story and it still bring tears to my eyes each time I read it. Everyone should read and understand this story.
thank you for posting this. my sons birthday is in two days... he will be 3 years old. i hope he grows to be a good son like you are to your mother. good job.
That's so sad because that tree gave up so much for the boy and nothing she did for him was ever good enough and the end was so depressing because the tree was just a stump and the boy was a old man. That's sad

The boy is not greedy, he is taking what the tree gives him. That is the meaning of love to give with out the care of receiving.

okay why is the tree ALWAYS HAPPY whatever the selfish boy do to her???
randomnessy12 6 months ago
@randomnessy12 Because the true meaning of love is seeing happiness in what you are giving, regardless if you are receiving.

Hating the boy would mean hating the whole human race.
The tree's happiness is in giving, not in getting a reward or getting its efforts reciprocated
