Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) gives near FM quality sound on the AM(SW LW MW)bands in mono and stereo,DAB+ has better codecs and better bit rates and beats current DAB by a mile!
well, how DAB can be more efficiency with the radio spectrum than newer technologies in RF is a real wonder. How can this technology which currently use larger RF space be more efficiency than cellular technology which use smaller RF channel space and can have higher amount of bandwith... even DVB-T will expand the spectrum with higher bandwith. But not Eureka.
Actually not true (obvious for LW and MW shich truly is crap). It's just that DAB multiplex owners run stereo music channels at 128kbs which is too low a bitrate to sound as good as FM.
But where I live in London with its interfering pirate stations and buildings causing lots of signal multipath reflections, FM is a nightmare and DAB is truly excellent.
Also there are plenty more stations on DAB such as a truly excellent gay dance radio station in London called Gaydar. Fantastic!
@nicklansley 128k is actually CD quality under the new DAB+ system. No more MPEG 1 layer 2 Musicam, a more efficient compression system is used now. "Joint" stereo broadcasts waves that are in the center of the audio field only once, tagging the packets as mono. Still, multipath is part of the solution in DAB+.
DAB went live in Europe in the early 1990's, launched commercially in the UK in 1999, and is still an excellent robust radio system with hundreds of radio stations and millions of receivers. And 97% of people are happy with the sound quality.
It's multifrequency.

@outithewoods It does now. DAB+ any time soon.

Reply to 04:50 ish: And doesn't interfere with your current AM and FM reception.

@AnthonyUK No because it's IBOC-like, but without the analogue sidebands.

DAB is more about efficiency of the radio spectrum, ease of tuning and freedom of interference than audio quality.
Alas audio is compressed using MPEG1 Layer 2 audio, aka MP2 (this video calls it 'Musicam') which is the forerunner of the more efficient MP3.
Also many multiplex owners run stereo radio stations at 128Kbps which is not as good as FM in terms of frequency response.

@nicklansley MUSICAM is what MPEG 1 layer 2 is based on, funny-head!

I don't see the quality of DAB better than FM, I really don't.

fm medium wave and long wave is 100 times better than that dab crap
