If man kind only learned from the past. We all have lost friends and loved ones to war. I know I have lost many comrads and friends over my life. R.I.P
There's a gorgeous new version of this. Sung by a young woman - completely different take on it - sounds like she's singing into Willie McBride's ear. Have a look at Shaefri - The Green Fields of France.
I think this version is the best I have heard of this song. Ronans' voice and the Orchestra adaptation are outstanding. He is truly a remarkable singer.
Thank you for posting this video of the concert. I have tried to find this song sung by Ronan on CD but have not been successful.
As I said, I know nothing of Mr. Tynan. There just seemed to be a great disconnect between the intent of the song and the way it is performed here.
So, again, I humbly apologize to all whom I may have offended. It all goes back to "If you can't say something nice about someone, then don't say anything at all"
Ronan Tynan is such a class act. Im a retired FDNY, and i remember Ronan at the 1st anniversary 9/11 memorial at Madison Square Garden for the 343 brothers killed. He was great as usual performing God Bless America. For the Yankees to fire him and him having to leave NY to get work over some perceived anti semitic remark is disgraceful. Im sill (barely) a yankee fan, but I hope he does well in Boston and comes back to NY eventually.
The irony is that Tynan sang at so many post 911 events of a "patriotic" nature and this is the greatest anti-war song ever published in English; 911 was the rationale for the war on and of terror since them--with no end in sight.
They died in vain as it was not the "war to end all wars" and the neocons and Obamacons have condemned the world to war without end.
@pedrocubano133 Tell me about this dismissal by the Yankees. I did not know he was working for the Yankees. I recently asked him to become a friend, and commented that I like the BoSox. I may have insulted him, not knowing the story.
Write me at c.stepp@mail.utexas.edu, please, and tell me this story. Carol Stepp
Ronan Tynan sings this beautiful song with feeling and sincerity. You feel as though he is actually sitting there next to young Willie's grave. The orchrastra music gives the feel of the somber but more peaceful times there in the green fields of france, as depectied in the songs lyrics. This is the best version of this song I have ever heard.

I wish he had performed this song at Reagan's Funeral; but I guess that would have been in bad taste for a man who invaded Grenada, supported Maggie Thatcher's imperialism in the Fauklands and her Irish Internment policy and union breaking, and let George HW Bush and the neocons commit war crimes and genocide in Central America.
Second. He should not sing this song! That's right. Even though he has all the notes and a great orchestra behind him, he does not convince me for one second that he could have ever experienced that which he is singing about. Please note, I know nothing of him personally. It's just that the "performance" while beautifully sung, has not one iota of sincerity of the intent of the lyrics.
@tubefortom Tynan is an M.D. as well as a great tenor.; he is also a lower extremity, double amputee. So he knows a little about suffering. He still practices medicine as well in the little town where he lives in Ireland. He's a very beloved figure in his little town & in Ireland as a whole.
What a magnificent voice!! and a beautiful song!! It brings tears to my eyes to think of all the young men and women who die in these aweful wars. God Bless them all and may they RIP.

Not as long as we have warmongers like Tony Bliar willing send in the troops on the strength of vile lie. As long as we have idiots like him at the helm, war will continue and 1000's will die. Thank God he failed to become President of Europe because if he had I dread to think what wicked mischief he would have caused.
Thanks again machree01 for this beautiful video, and that of Anthony Kearns singing "Grace"...both songs are touching beyond words. Appreciate your contributions for the pleasure of the rest of us.
wilmaohman your mistaken about ronan loosing his legs when he was 20 he was born with out proper legs and now has prosteric limbs . he hunts with the north kilkenny hunt and once i seen him fall off a horse and his legs went flying off nearly died laghing .know its not funny but you shound have seen every ones face when he asked a young girl to pck up his legs for him .
irishmadhater, you are partly right.i just goggled his biography.i was previously quoting readers digest.he was born with lower limb disability. at 20 he had to have both legs amputated due to a car accident.the most remarkable thing about this man is, he never let this slow him down.he not only dances as well as or better than people 1/2 his age, with his prostetic legs.he has a voice to die for.also one hell of a career.
From what I understand the car accident damaged his already disabled legs to point of being virtually unusable. Ronan searched for a doctor that would be willing to amputate them as he felt he would be better off with prosthetic legs than the ones he had after the car accident. No matter what, he is quite a remarkable man and also a great inspiration to others!
this guy is great.he sang with the three irish tenors for years.he's a doctor.one hell of a dancer.he became an american citizen a few years ago.he lost both legs when he was 20 years old

It's 11/11/11 here in Australia. 1918 was 93 years ago. 1945 was 66 years ago. Still the plights of these men make me cry, and feel proud to my core.
