Thank you for you post. I was only 4 years old when this song was released, and do you know that I remember this beat? I bought a compilation of her music. I cannot wait to see her on Unsung this coming Monday.
Mary Wells off 4th street next to the Old Stone Swimming Pool, badest Female Voice on the Motown Label, just left to soon. A regular non-pretentions person--Sing on Mary, we Love you Always, Detroit.
Some interesting comments. what is really ironic is that the haters admire the people who go to this music as the source and attempt to imitate. very telling.
An excellent debut song for a woman who became one of the most successful female recording artists until her passing in 1992.Still sounding grand even now.God bless & love Mary Wells!
To LandRoverWriter, this bass line was from Motown where Mary cut this Track. If my memory serves me correctly James Jamerson was the bassist at that time !
When Berry Gordy signed Mary Wells to Motown and she cut her first record, "Bye Bye Baby", Gordy had her do numerous takes until her voice was raw and bluesy - and that's the way she sounds on this record too, she sounds almost hoarse
In my humble opinion this song changed the sound and face of pop music more than any. Her earthy and touching voice has left a lasting impression throughout the years.
@slave4bbw man, i totally agree. This song is so strong and gritty. You want to take her in your arms and tell Mary it's ok. and for me, it's so completely a motown sound (and i"m not referring to motown recording studios).
petzoid Gospel legend Marion Williams of the legendary Clara Ward Singers and later The Stars of Faith, was the first to use that "woooo". Little Richard and other soul/r&b singers "borrowed" it from her.
Jus had to hear this one again. There's something about Mary Wells and that Motown Sound that will forever be a part of my life. Especially this song dedicated to the Mac a Roni.
Mary Wells deserved the acknowledgment of being the First Lady Of Motown because she was. I'm sending this in response to what I just read (2 months late) of christheone8773's posting about Mary and Martha at Motown 25. It's not true. I was there for the rehearsal, the actual show and for post-production. There were parts of the show that never hit the air due to time constraints, but not a Mary/Martha moment. That never happened.
Oh, and how about that Little Richard signature high pitched WOOOOOO? Who did that first--Mary or Little Richard? Beatles incorporated it in their work.
Richard but Mary's "woooo" was outta sight too. :) I think Mary was trying to imitate how Jackie Wilson would interpret it since she originally was trying to get the song to him.
So fun. That rawness to her voice reminds me of Tina Turner--it's real soul. I wanted to jump up and dance to this one. All time great. I do wish superrick would post the hilarious video of the cat in his logo picture. It makes milk come out your nose.
I read somewhere that, on Motown 25, Mary Wells and Martha Reeves were supposed to perform a medley of at least three of their hits, but because of time constraints, their set only consisted of 30 seconds of one of their hits - truly a slap in the face given all their accomplishments-
@chilliard2201 Actually, it was the only time Motown gave her some recognition. In the Motown 25th Anniversary compilation are My Guy and Bye Bye Baby. She was the first to rebel against BG and suffered due to all his grief and hard feelings. It is said that BG even threatened to sue radios if they played her songs recorded after she left Motown. But I still agree that she is hugely underestimated.
Mary only sang this song in that rough tone. I guess it was the style for a minute ..as gladys Horton of the marvelettes sang the same way. so did smokey(Way over there, got to dance to keep from crying) Both Mary and Smokey dropped the rough singing and opted for a softer tone. Which Worked them both over to the Pop charts. I was glad when they both changed. some didnt like Gladys Horton. which is probably why they didnt cross over as well, but wanda voice was smoother which they used later.
Great song, tells the guy the deal so he will feel her pain, and leave him to his misery for causing her great pain, when she was always a true good girl.
My Top Five Motown record of all-time. Here in Philly, Hy-Ski and The Geator played this song at their record hops every week. Motown Mary Wells was great.
In 1960, 17 year old Wells approached Berry Gordy at a night club with a song she meant for Jackie Wilson to record. Gordy insisted Wells sing the song in front of him. Impressed, he had Wells enter the studio to record the single, titled "Bye Bye Baby". After a reported twenty-two takes, Gordy signed Wells and released the song as a single in late 1960- peaked at number eight on the R&B chart in 1961.
YES - he wanted her voice to have a bluesy feel to it, and you can tell by the end of the song that her voice was cracking big time - Berry Gordy wanted his artists to be the best, and he wasnt settling for anything less--
When this track was issued on Mary Wells' Grestest Hits LP (probably after she left the label), the vocal chorus was removed, which made it sound less dated, less early '60s. Don't know whether that version has been put on CD. Anyway, both are great.
You're right, but the original cut is so much better. Just listen to hoops and baritone background. Like they say, if it ain't broke, then don't fix it.
It'd have been great on Stax; but as it is, it's one of the greatest bass lines on any Motown record as well. It's one of the best Motown recordings, period. I remember finding the old pink label Motown 45 in a junk store in a small town in Kansas (go figure!), and after getting back home, slapping this on the turntable and playing it something like eight times in a row. Best record I found that day, or any day.
What A Raw, Unique, Talented Voice... Ms. Mary Wells will forever be the best of all time... The Original Queen Of Motown
