  • Released in December 1960(as a 1961 single)as Motown 1003

  • > THIS SONG IS A DAMN MASTERPIECE > PRICELESS <

  • Wow!! What a wonderful song. So much Motown and Sweet soul was on the radio when I was growing up... where did it all go???

  • Mary Wells was a beautiful lady with an awesome, rich, earthy and even sexy voice. This is a great debut single for her.

  • Mary Wells was a beautiful lady with an awesome, rich, earthy and even sexy voice. This is a great debut single for her.

  • An excellent debut song for a woman who became one of the most successful female recording artists until her passing in 1992.Still sounding grand even now.God bless & love Mary Wells!

  • love this song. the detroit cobras cover it. check em out.

  • Remarkable hit, brings back memories of yesteryear.

  • absolutely love you, mary.....Rip. You're now among the angels where you belong. Because you're an angel for all time.

  • this is mine kind of rolas.

  • To LandRoverWriter, this bass line was from Motown where Mary cut this Track. If my memory serves me correctly James Jamerson was the bassist at that time !

  • @eyeball65 Your memory serves you correctly.

  • In my humble opinion this song changed the sound and face of pop music more than any. Her earthy and touching voice has left a lasting impression throughout the years.

  • @slave4bbw man, i totally agree. This song is so strong and gritty. You want to take her in your arms and tell Mary it's ok. and for me, it's so completely a motown sound (and i"m not referring to motown recording studios).

  • Did Ms. Wells every sing a bad song?

If so, I never heard it.

  • her best song!!

  • petzoid Gospel legend Marion Williams of the legendary Clara Ward Singers and later The Stars of Faith, was the first to use that "woooo". Little Richard and other soul/r&b singers "borrowed" it from her.

  • bye bye Boxer. It's been real.

  • Mary you could really sing.

    Rest in Peace!!!!

    Thanks.

  • Jus had to hear this one again. There's something about Mary Wells and that Motown Sound that will forever be a part of my life. Especially this song dedicated to the Mac a Roni.

  • I remember when Sly Stone was a DJ on KSOL SF/Oakland and he played this record. He couldn't believe it was Mary, being used to her "softer" sound.

  • Mary Wells deserved the acknowledgment of being the First Lady Of Motown because she was. I'm sending this in response to what I just read (2 months late) of christheone8773's posting about Mary and Martha at Motown 25. It's not true. I was there for the rehearsal, the actual show and for post-production. There were parts of the show that never hit the air due to time constraints, but not a Mary/Martha moment. That never happened.

  • Oh, and how about that Little Richard signature high pitched WOOOOOO? Who did that first--Mary or Little Richard? Beatles incorporated it in their work.

  • Richard but Mary's "woooo" was outta sight too. :) I think Mary was trying to imitate how Jackie Wilson would interpret it since she originally was trying to get the song to him.

  • So fun. That rawness to her voice reminds me of Tina Turner--it's real soul. I wanted to jump up and dance to this one. All time great. I do wish superrick would post the hilarious video of the cat in his logo picture. It makes milk come out your nose.

  • Yup, Mary was and is the Lady of Motown !!! I could listien to her ALL day long !!! GO MARY >>>>

  • Mary Wells, one of those talents that can never be replaced..God Bless her

  • What a VOICE! What a face!! One of the greatest divas (in a good way) of all time!! God bless ya, mary!

  • MG's first hit. One of the BEST songs of all time . Thanks for posting!

  • The first time I heard this, I had no idea it was a Mary Wells song.

  • jus to hear again, rollerskate umm. These were the good timez.

  • The voice that gave Motown it's start. It's toobad she was never given her props not even at Motown 25. I loved this girl

  • I read somewhere that, on Motown 25, Mary Wells and Martha Reeves were supposed to perform a medley of at least three of their hits, but because of time constraints, their set only consisted of 30 seconds of one of their hits - truly a slap in the face given all their accomplishments-

  • @chilliard2201 Actually, it was the only time Motown gave her some recognition. In the Motown 25th Anniversary compilation are My Guy and Bye Bye Baby. She was the first to rebel against BG and suffered due to all his grief and hard feelings. It is said that BG even threatened to sue radios if they played her songs recorded after she left Motown. But I still agree that she is hugely underestimated.

  • Mary only sang this song in that rough tone. I guess it was the style for a minute ..as gladys Horton of the marvelettes sang the same way. so did smokey(Way over there, got to dance to keep from crying) Both Mary and Smokey dropped the rough singing and opted for a softer tone. Which Worked them both over to the Pop charts. I was glad when they both changed. some didnt like Gladys Horton. which is probably why they didnt cross over as well, but wanda voice was smoother which they used later.

  • you know you took my love i heart here

  • Great song, tells the guy the deal so he will feel her pain, and leave him to his misery for causing her great pain, when she was always a true good girl.

  • For bout 50 years as soon as hear

Mary Wells I wanna get up & dance!

  • fookin brill !!!

  • dam shes so fukn PPPPRETTTTY

  • Singin' it like she meant it! Totally badass!

  • My Top Five Motown record of all-time. Here in Philly, Hy-Ski and The Geator played this song at their record hops every week. Motown Mary Wells was great.

  • In 1960, 17 year old Wells approached Berry Gordy at a night club with a song she meant for Jackie Wilson to record. Gordy insisted Wells sing the song in front of him. Impressed, he had Wells enter the studio to record the single, titled "Bye Bye Baby". After a reported twenty-two takes, Gordy signed Wells and released the song as a single in late 1960- peaked at number eight on the R&B chart in 1961.

  • strandwolf, TWENTY-TWO "takes"?! So that's where that "rasp" in her voice is coming from but oh it sounds SO good!

  • The "rasp" gave it so much more. I think Berry knew what he was doing on this cut. Love Mary Wells and this cut is pure funk & soul. She peed on it.

  • YES - he wanted her voice to have a bluesy feel to it, and you can tell by the end of the song that her voice was cracking big time - Berry Gordy wanted his artists to be the best, and he wasnt settling for anything less--

  • When this track was issued on Mary Wells' Grestest Hits LP (probably after she left the label), the vocal chorus was removed, which made it sound less dated, less early '60s. Don't know whether that version has been put on CD. Anyway, both are great.

  • You're right, but the original cut is so much better. Just listen to hoops and baritone background. Like they say, if it ain't broke, then don't fix it.

  • @BFF1 yeah, the stereo version was issued a few years ago on cd

  • that's so tacky.

  • One of the best bass lines on any Stax recording - her raspy voice is majestic

  • Correction: Motown recording, lol

  • @LandRoverWriter

It'd have been great on Stax; but as it is, it's one of the greatest bass lines on any Motown record as well. It's one of the best Motown recordings, period. I remember finding the old pink label Motown 45 in a junk store in a small town in Kansas (go figure!), and after getting back home, slapping this on the turntable and playing it something like eight times in a row. Best record I found that day, or any day.

  • @LandRoverWriter Stax recording?? She recorded this for Motown, was on the very first Motown album ever issued, in 1969.

  • @calwaite LandRover, you must have meant 1959!

  • @LandRoverWriter this wasnt stax this was early motown wen they still called the label tamla

  • @LandRoverWriter

Wells never sang for Stax but for Motown and later on for Atco-Atlantic

  • she better go ahead!!!!!

that rasp she got here fits this song perfectly.

  • one of her best songs ever!

  • I love this jam the BEST of all of her recordings. I remember doing this dance called the Hitch Hike with the thumbs up in the air!

  • @Yelothndr Oh yea,and don't forget Marvin Gaye,who sang hitchhike......those were

the days...........it came and went.........really clean dancing.

  • @Yelothndr Marvin Gaye made a song called Hitch Hike! We were getting off back n the day werent we?

  • the best Mary's kicks ever!

  • great song ricky

  • Tight song..Niceee I like..thx superrick2..Lola La Muneca248
