I met with Pilatus a while back and discussed this type of descent. It's within operating limits of airframe, prop and engine. If done properly, there's no stress on the machine at all. Most jump operations that operate Porters do this type of descent after emptying the plane. After dropping everyone at 12,500, it's not unusual to see the plane back on the ground before the last jumper. Since it's a turbine, there's no need to worry about shock cooling the engine.

Not impressed. Would be much cooler if the plane was rotating in a dive. The pilot showing his face was kind of gay too. would have been faster if the airspeed was at the top of the yellow and the landing was a high descent with a hard prang on grass with a 300 foot roll. not bad but not impressive either. Grow a pair and do some real piloting you pussy.
tactical descent, or a bagdad approach, i did one of them in colorado about 5 years ago, what a freekin blast, TOOK AN HOUR for my head to clear out, after a rapid descent like that. i will never forget it that is for sure.
@daniloivensmina surely if you have any commercial flight experience at all, which I assume you do to make a remark like that then you would know that skydiving need the aircraft to descend faster than the skydivers, also you should recognise this as a steep gliding turn, check the instruments, all is well within limits and a manoeuvre commonly used in aviation to lose height at a fast rate. Not toys no but this is standard procedure in meat bombing
@daniloivensmina Oh, come on. Every FAA certified plane has to go through extensive test flying to establish it performs as designed. Part of the pilot's responsibility is to keep operation within these flight parameters. Flown within parameters this airplane will NOT kill ANYONE. This aircraft is COMPLETELY capable of the maneuver.
@daniloivensmina You should probably know what you're talking about before you type next time. Its called an emergency descent, is within the means of the aircraft, and should be practiced for all pressurized aircraft. It the event of a pressurization loss, you need to be down below 10k feet, much faster than this pilot even shows
That is an absolute masterpiece of energy management right there, knowing when to turn and put some load on it to slow it in the dive, and exactly where to level out so he hardly had to touch the power on the landing. Brilliant flying.
I saw 12,200' at the start and he lands 200 feet below sea level. So that is a 12,400' descent. 6,200' FPM descent ain't bad. He most likely should set his altimeter though. Beta on the prop helps. I have done 4000' FPM in a Bonanza and stayed below Vne.
Fantastic! One of the best tactical descents I've ever seen. Planes like this are a marvel to watch. It's fun watching a C-17 do the same thing: it's done 14,000 fpm descent into combat zones using the reversers on the inboard engines and plopped right into a dirt field. Props (pun intended) to the pilots of both! And great video! Fived and faved.
Right, there are no spoilers on a Porter PC6. Full flaps will create a great deal of drag and limit speed somewhat. However, at that extreme nose down attitude it wil surely speed past safe flap range. My guess is also BETA on the prop. This would do it and is one great advantage turbo props have over pistons.
I am not an expert on this type of aircraft, but I think the drag is very high when he uses full flaps. basically you have to put your stick down to keep speed.
@eagleamine Actually, it shows -200 feet. You gotta count reverse once you go below MSL. And just nitpicking, but that was 12,000 feet y'all started at. 12,000 or 14,000, it's all the same: impressive.
one the the smoothest landings I've seen

I often wondered how dive bomber pilots in WW II could do this and their ear drums not explode.

@jonny2387 Reverse pitch on the prop. It acts like a brake, effectively trying to push the airplane backwards.

Pretty sure there are no spoilers on the PC-6. The prop is likely in Beta reducing the descent speed while allowing an incredible descent angle.
