  • This music always makes me so sad :'(

  • Comment removed

  • I can sort of imagine the Doctor and Madame Pompadour waltzing slowly to this song on an empty dance floor in his dreams, both knowing it isn't real but dancing anyways... :(

  • "I just snogged Madame de Pompadour!"

  • I cried when I heard this song! Amazing!

  • This episode really showed the loneliness the doctor feels....one can feel it when he says i'm fine...i'm always fine since it means the exact opposite in fact. The look on his face and the combination of this beautiful and heartbreaking music when he's reading her final letter is so sad! this is my favorite song and episode!

  • Wow...she would have made an amazing companion. Rose, if Madame de Pompasour became the Doctor's companion, you might get bumped down as my 2nd favorite companion. She should have traveled with him, even if it was for a few episodes...

  • SOPHIAAAA

  • Sophia Myles brought me here!!!

  • I NEED THIS SONG!

  • Loneliness in musical tones. How can one do it? I guess, if that one is Murray Gold, yes, it's not impossible.

  • And here I am again, listening to this video...and crying...

  • This is so beautiful. Those piano notes harmonizing with the melody really seem to make my heart stop.

  • " Godspeed my lonely angel " :'(

  • Everything was in the right place.

The 3 geniues; David Tennant, Steven Moffat and Murray Gold.

Take out one of those elements and it isn't the same. Take ou TWO and it's completely ruined!

  • "Godspeed, my lonely angel..." That is sad.

If you think about it, it's actually not the SADDEST story in DW but the music is half the sadness. Especially since I lost someone a few months back. This reminds me of him...

  • must... not.. cry.... :'(

  • Murray Gold is a brilliant composer. Every time I hear this I think the chord is going to resolve into this happy major chord, but he stumps my expectations. That's the sign of a good composer. Compose the unpredictable.

  • If I were to die soon, I'd want this played at my funeral. It's just such a heart-wrenching piece. Murray Gold is a genius.

  • Trop cool

  • I can hear her beautiful, rich voice, calling out to her lonely angel...

  • This episode showed just how good an actor David Tennant is. Through most of the episode, he's his normal silly Doctor. But at the end, you saw the absolute depths of loneliness which encompassed the Doctor. The truth of his soul which he hid with laughter and silly antics like a grease faced clown.

  • @wolfva You sir are epic

  • @wolfva I love you're comment it sums up my feelings of David Tennant as the doctor perfectly P: that's his nature hide the sadness behind silliness.

  • @amirizar2012 except when he is with River...<3 I will marry her someday...

  • @andrewofthelemon River is awesome and the way her story played out in series 6 was really intersting!

  • @wolfva

I swear to god there's a Joker reference in your comment.

Or I'm just an overly obsessive Batman nerd. Whichever fits.

  • Even if you don't like this episode you have to appreciate beautiful music when you hear it.

  • such a beautiful yet sorrowful song

  • This episode was REALLY sad T.T

  • This episode made me do my French project on her. She VERY intresting :)

  • I will not cry. I will not cry. I will not-oh shit

  • THE TEARS. THEY'RE COMING BACK.

  • Russel T. Davies and Murray Gold... greatest geniuses who have ever lived.

  • @GallifreyGirl49 Actually Steven Moffat wrote this episode..

  • @GallifreyGirl49 Russel T. Davies didn't write a single brilliant episode in my opinion. Steven Moffat, on the other hand, wrote several of those (including The Girl in the Fireplace). I mean I'm grateful to Mr Davies for renewing the series but I really wouldn't call him a genius.

Murray Gold is one of my favourite composers too, so no arguing there :)

  • I know everyone says that Doomsday broke their heart/made them cry, but dear lord, no movie or t.v show has every made me cry like "The Girl In The Fireplace"

  • I cry everytime. I literally sat in my friend's car while he played this and cried.

  • I wish she had existed.

  • @YourAnAthlete

Who, Madame de Pompadour? But she DID exist! She was a real woman! She lived around the 1700s in aristocratic France. She was the king's mistress, which means she wasn't his wife but his bit on the side. ;)

Luckily she died before the French Revolution, otherwise she might have got her head chopped off.

  • When it comes to sentiment, Murrary Gold is the best. check out his song for the BBC's production of Casanova. It's called "Casanova Love Theme".

  • I feel sad for the ship. It was just trying to survive.

  • It is sad that the doctor was beginning to fall in love with her, but right when he was about to pick her up and let her see the stars, she died. :(

  • I love you, your so thick

never say this to your head teacher

  • I have heard this song in places other than Dr. Who. I recognized it and had to know the name. Does anyone know the name of any of the other movies and tv shows in which this song has been used. I can't remember for the life of me.

  • Absolutely stunning!

  • This is a beautiful song, and, although Madame de Pompadour wasn't one of my favourite characters, it was just so sad that she didn't get to travel with the Doctor. She would've been wonderful. And this song is just so beautiful, very good for Madame de Pompadour, it brings tears to my eyes.

And I don't understand how the Doctor can cope with the loss of all those people who died for/instead of him, or the ones who were trappedinto parallel worlds. I wouldn't be able to cope.

    R.I.P 10th Doctor.

  • This episode was probably the finest piece of television I've ever seen.

  • @Braveheartjags I agree. I know people who said ''Doctor Who is crap! Its just for kids and teenagers''. So I told them to watch this episode and now they're fans.

  • I was so sad when Madame de Pompadour didn't get to travel with the Doctor. And she had waited so long, until her death... :(

  • I wouldn't be able to cope as the doctor.... All those people that die while he lives on and lives with it forever...

  • Impossible to play just once.

  • Shows how short our lives are, maybe that's what the doctor is. So old yet each life he lives is so short. However you see it, this is a beautiful piece of music.

  • @suadela87 & @WHOTHEDOCTORNOW

The Little Mermaid (the real story, not the Disney version =P) is a prime example of a fairytale without a happy ending. It has an extremely tragic ending.

  • Amelia Pond like a name in a fairytale :O

  • 4 people did not snog Madame de Pompadour.

  • oh my god this makes me cry :( its just beauty and all that good stuff

  • Reminds me of a fairytale. Of course, the episode was written by Moff who seems to like fairytales (me = capt. obvious) but yeah.... I'll shut up now.

  • @suadela87 Fairytale is a perfect description. It was a fairytale story really just not one with a happy ending.

  • @WHOTHEDOCTORNOW Yes, very much like a fairytale. Surprisingly though, many fairytales don't have a happy ending. Disney just makes it seem like they do.

  • probably my favorite episode...well..ok...I say that about every single one.

  • I couldn't help but tear up a little at the end. Magnificent episode.

  • This song raises goose pimples all over my skin. It's so eerie and beatiful... doctor who has amazing music... my heart goes out to reinette and the doctor.

  • Comment removed

  • How is it that a man that deserves otherwise, always ends up alone. Everyone around him dies, while he keeps living on. Alone. It's unfair..

  • Sad. The doctor made a promise to show her a star, and he didn't come back until she died...Don't you hate those time windows? You can see things as they happen on the other side...but as soon as you look away, time passes too fast...

  • It was rainig when I was listing this it complement. The song purrfectly.

  • At least Reinette was intelligent enough to keep up with the Doctor, instead of just constantly in awe of him like Rose was. -.-

  • @tokyopanda13 But that was the first time Reinette met him pretty much, and Rose had been with him for quite a while so it's different. Reinette probably would have been in awe with him aswell if she had known him for longer, don't you agree?

  • @thehollsterpop Well if you thinkabout it, she grew up with him. He was around all her life in a way

  • The Doctor and Madam De Pompadour were as in love as love can get. Maybe more....

  • @CrazyBeautifulLife00 noooooooooooo.

  • @AdrielEverin yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees

  • "i love you your so thick" the doctor drunk

  • I heard this in War of the Servers. :'(

  • "I just snogged Madame De Pompadour!"

    -Hilarius line.

  • I listened to this while reading Pride and Prejudice.

I was at the part when Elizabeth was reading Mr. Darcy's letter of apology, and she realized what a fool she was.

    It was so perfect.

The book is magnificent, as well as the song.

  • He has a time machine, he should of gone back to right after she picked out her star. Psh, make a bitch wait till she dies.

  • @Aubainex He couldn't. Once he stepped back through the fireplace for the last time and accepted Reinette's letter, he no longer had the option to return to an earlier point in her life, because this would have created a paradox. In other words, had the Doctor used the TARDIS to return to a point before Reinette's death, he would not have had the conversation with the King about all the years she spent waiting for him to return, but he did, and that couldn't be changed after the fact.

  • This is almost identical to Ianto's theme in Torchwood! :O 'Tis amazing!!!!

  • @smartassmusicjunkie I wouldn't say they're identical really, but they do have similar musical feautures and there's definitely an equally haunting quality to each piece of music so I can see where you're coming from! This and Ianto's theme are probably two of my favorite Doctor Who/Torchwood related pieces of music because of this quality actually :D And I definitely can agree with you on the last part, it is amazing! :D xxx

  • There is never enough time for love or to tell someone how much you love them. Before you know it you have to say that final goodbye. Isn't time a strange thing.

  • "My Dear Doctor, The path has never seemed more slow and yet I fear I am nearing its end. Reason tells me that you and I are unlikely to meet again, but I think I shall not listen to reason. I have seen the world inside your head and know that all things are possible. Hurry then my love; my days grow shorter now and I am so very weak. Godspeed my lonely angel. "

  • @JuniorModder Thank you for putting this up I know it is not real but I understand its meaning so well... I believe anyone who has lost there love but never the hope that that love will return can understand and weep for both the characters.

  • @JuniorModder "bit i think i shall not listen to reason" broke my heart

  • @JuniorModder I watched this episode again tonight, and I can hear her voice, her beautiful voice....I love Madame de Pompadour :)

  • @JuniorModder ;__;

  • omg i'm crying over a show's said song

lolz this is my favorite episode but the doctor's wife is really close

  • Oh god, this episode made me cry. This series is truly a masterpiece

  • This music is amazing.

Steven Moffat is a great writer, if a bit idiosyncratic at times. His concepts are marvellous

  • This music is amazing.

  • @Retrofire28 oops thats a mistake on my part.

  • Dammit, I'm not crying. It's just a song goddammit. NOT. CRYING.

  • @Cliketh

yea, like you didn't cry when they both died

  • askjfhaksjgfaksg beautiful

  • Either I've left a window open too long or this is making me shake

  • this song is brilliant and making mw ant to cry at the same time

  • I love this music and some more classical music and you should listen to this one it's

    called Rose's theme.

  • This song makes me think of the lonely ship floating out in the nowhere of space, following this brave young woman through her timeline all the way to her death...I wish Madame de Pompadour could have travelled with the Doctor, even if it was for a single episode. She would have been a wonderful companion.

  • I'm getting depressed just hearing this. Such a great episode.

  • the end is the best in my opinion

  • Murray Gold wrote such wonderful music for the Dr. this one was a real classic.

  • we played this at my grandad's funeral. we all cried because it was a beautiful piece of music that went with the well lived, beautiful, wonderful man. He tought me that nothing is impossible, only improbable. Great music.

  • @eviedewinters Then it seems the perfect choice :)

  • This song makes me sad. Just because it's so very, very beautiful.

This was also the first episode of Doctor Who that made my cry.

  • im going to have this played at my furneral and the straight after ac/dc high way to hell. haHaHAHAHA

  • ... Goodbye my lonely angel

    <3

  • This is such a beautiful theme. One of my favourite themes from Doctor Who. It just captures so well, how much The Doctor cared for Madame de Pompadour, and his broken heart when she died before he could fulfill his promise to her.

  • This is truly one of the most beautiful pieces of music in the whole soundtrack. It's so peaceful and lovely and i feel like i could just drift away. The Girl In The Fireplace is such a beautiful episode, my all time favourite. There isn't one piece of Murray Gold's music i don't like. I was almost tearing up listening to this, its gorgeous. Im tempted to go and watch the episode now!

  • ' one may tolerate a world of demons for the sake of an angel' <3 love this episode

  • i cant resist crying when i hear this! there is truly no human that can resist sadness listening to this

  • Murray Gold is a brilliant composer. This song is so simple, but so powerful. A true example of "less is more." I still tear up every time I hear it. It leaves me with a almost haunted feeling, like there's more to be heard, more to be said, but it's my job to finish the melody...

  • This song reminds me of a love lost. Strong sadness but a determination to continue on, carrying the burden everywhere I go.

  • no one can make me cry like russel t davies and thats saying a lot!

  • I cry when ever i hear this music because I remember those amazing Friday nights every week watching this show with my dad. Though we never do that any more and I haven't seen any of this fantastic acting for year about a year or so.

This is definitely the best television show I have ever seen and the episode that this music goes along to is an unbeatable piece of art. Its amazing. Truly amazing

  • @UberSpaceCow i cried because she died!

  • Like Chloe said there is probably a man like the doctor for every woman out there, but there is never a woman right for a man out there, and when you find her its too late. Guess men take the fast path after all. Could be wrong, hopefully I am.

  • @SVWillmer

    i hope so to

  • Bloody brilliant if you ask me

  • this was my all time favorite episode and the music just added to my love for it.

  • The true human spirit and human understanding of this series never ceased to amaze me. I'm so sad that it was lost in the last version and with Matt Smith and the whole bad new visual look. It lost all of this and more. The Tennant/Euros Lyn was definitely the pinnacle of the entire series and seems unfortunately to never be matched again based on the 2010 debacle of Doctor Who. I would rather they had stopped the show while it was at it's peak than trash the quality of it.

  • The 3 people that disliked this... they just suck. This song is amazing.

  • "There comes a time Timelord, When every lonely little boy must learn to dance".

    One of my favourite lines.

  • @andysim232 oh yeah it's brilliant ... beautiful :)

  • @andysim232 my favourite line is "One must tolerate a world of demons for the sake of an angel", but both lines are so undescribably beautiful, The Girl In The Fireplace was by far the best doctor who episode, and will always be my favourite episode. I am thinking about getting a line from it tattooed, to show my neverending love for dr who, but also because it would be a very subtle reference that only true whovians would notice, most people would just see it as a pretty quote.

  • @bulletcookiegirl oh do it, that would be lovely

  • looooooooooove this sob

  • the ending is the best, when the harmonies drop out or down in dynamics, leaving just the music box sound.

  • While my headphones gently weep...

  • Do you think The Doctor loved Madame de Pompadour?

  • @ThePhoenix88FCP I think he cared about her a lot, but that his heart was already with Rose.

    Maybe :).

  • @ThePhoenix88FCP I don't think he was in love with her, no ... he was just so sad. This woman had known him all her life, she had loved him, she had loved him so much, and he'd let her down. He had promised her he'd take her to see a star, and he got back ... just that little bit too late, she was already gone, passed beyond, where he could never reach her, never say sorry, never even say goodbye.

Hers was a very sad story I think, and the music just sums up all the emotion of that ep perfectly

  • The 3 people who disliked this do not have the parts.

  • Good one!

  • Clever that one is!

  • Man, is there anyone out there who doesnt think this music is amazing? I love it. It makes me feel good and sad at the same time, but I like that.

  • I thought it was a family show. That's why people were upset when the revamped TARDIS had a swimming pool.

  • who me? oh don't worry i'm just the fireplace inspector.

  • i sing along to it, i love it so much it's my favourite piece of doctor who music

  • beautiful song, so sad though.

  • whats the other arrangement called, when renette asks him to dance with her.

  • @supersonicdrawer I think you'll find it when you look for "Clockwork Droids"?

  • i cried when she waited for him and when he came back, she had died. And just listening to this makes me cry.

  • Comment removed

  • The Girl in the Fireplace was my very first Doctor who experience. The funny thing is that I was looking for the remote while this episode came on and I did not intentionally want to watch it, but the combination of fantasy/sci-fi/love story got me hooked, and this music takes me back to that moment...

  • Doctor Who:

A Kids Show? Perhaps. But this has to be the most broad ranged, Beautiful, Intelligent and complex kids show (Infact TV Production) Ever made by the BBC.

  • @JadesVidz I'd argue ever

  • @JadesVidz lol kids show? riiight. a kid watching the episode empty child. yeah right!

  • @Falcor43 It plays on the fears of a child, while relating to a parent. Im not downgrading the show at all, Its brilliant. Im simply repeating what much media criticism states about it and justifying the show.

  • @JadesVidz i know i was just saying its pretty funny how some people actually think its for kids.

  • @Falcor43 it was one of the best C E did. My sis who was 8 at the time, loved it. My nan who is, well lets just say an older person. Hated it. when i say hated it i mean even now we go to her door and go "Mummy are you my mummy?" and she wont let us in. :) xxx

  • this melody is superb, but sad, sad because it shows that the Doctor can never feel love again, that he lost everything he loved, he cared, and dreamed about, he lost everything and he can`t get it back, this can be called in a lot of ways but to be honest, this is THE CURSE OF THE TIME LORDS...(the curse of the last of the time lords).

  • This is the saddest peice. Although 'The Dream of a Normal death' is a close second

  • i loved this episode it was one of the best ones thumbs up if you agree!! Arthur the horse!!! :) xx

  • Its very Sad :/

  • And does anyone know what that music was when the horse was following the doctor in this episode?

  • This show is amazing! It's sad, exciting, creative, and is just flawless. There is no other show in the world that can compare to this one. It's THE show.

  • There are few things that can make my spine shivver for 2 minutes straight as this did... I crave these things.

  • I've never seen an episode of Doctor Who. I came across this song in a Star Wars FMV, but it still makes me wanna cry, heh.

  • I can't believe I'm tearing up. It's not even real.

    I'm such a nerd.

  • @OMG1wtf Oh, you're not alone. In Gridlock, my freind and I started to cry.

In *Gridlock*. It's not even sad.

  • @OMG1wtf ur not alone!! i cried at the end of the episode! i was so sad

  • @OMG1wtf i can feel myself standing by the window, waiting for a visit that will never come. this music is maddening... it's gorgeous, haunting, brilliant.

  • @OMG1wtf It's not that your a nerd, it's because your listening to true art. True art can make even the toughest of men weap

  • @OMG1wtf i tear up when i see the doctor and rose together!

  • @OMG1wtf Madame De Pompadour was real, but the actual story wasn't

  • @Euphoria723

    I know.

  • @Euphoria723 The story was real too...

  • @TwoN00bsVlogging No it wasn't. All Doctor Who episodes are fake nothing about them is based in truth
