Excellent footage from the blue era............I very much regret not going to Manchester and the north west in the 70s & 80s as there was so much variety in the area at the time.
What memories your vid has bought back. I was 16 then and spent everyday of the summer holidays on rail rovers. Newton Heath was always one of my favourite depots. If I could turn back time I'd do it all again!! Thanks for sharing your vid
... and a 25, a couple of 45s and a 47 thrown in for good measure. I always thought the 45s and 47s looked bland in rail blue but it somehow makes the 40s look very handsome.
Thanks for posting! I only got interested in the railways later in the '80s, when the 25s and 40s were all gone and there were only a couple of dozen `peaks' left.
Awesome until 1955? The railways were bankrupt and falling apart in 1945, after being run into the ground in support of the war effort. That's why they were nationalized...
i remember going to newton heath on sundays, when loads of class 40 and 25 were stabled there.also red bank for the parcel and newspaper vans.HAPPY TIMES.
I also remember woodhead very well as my dad was the signaller at torside(bloody cold place lol) ,he us to take me with him when i was a kid ,but unfortunatly woodhead cannot be reopened now as the process of converting the tunnel to take the national grid power cable's has begun ,and it will mean it could never be used for railuse as it is being changed so much ,great shame !!!
I spend lots of time at newton heath ,and i can tell you its deadly silent now as we only run the engines(dmus) continusly when its frosty ,to protect the cooling systems great clip
Absolute Brilliant video of these classic Engines.
Worked on the railway 30 years "this year" makes me sad to see the crap running around now "class 66s lack of character im just glad to come out of work "York Iecc" and see them DRS ones sat there waiting for Action "3 cheers for DRS !!!
I remember the Woodhead line very well, especially the tunnel burrowing its way through the Pennines. In fact, years after regular Class 76 hauled passenger services ended, I was aboard a special charter train along the line behind 45 101 (itself now long gone) on 22 March 1981. I don't think the Woodhead line can ever be resurrected, though, as I'm sure the industrial vandals otherwise known as BR deliberately flooded the tunnel and sealed its portals with concrete soon afterwards.
I wouldn't bet against it, if we can tunnel under the English Channel and run trains then anything like that should be an easy feat to manage...plus, there is considerable growth in the rail industry at the moment and any lines either new or re-opening would only help raise capacity or reduce overcrowding elsewhere.
cheers aureol... I grew up in this area & my dad & my grandad worked at newton heath as drivers... these were happy times at newton heath.. we could hear the soft whistle coming from newton heath shed in our back yard & house.
This place is just full of DMU'S These days no sign of any loco's

It's like a stable full of thoroughbred stallions, all pawing the ground & ready for a race.
