They always said the P-51 and Spit could go over 600 mph in a full pitch dive. Don't know if that's true or not but lots were found crashed without wings and no battle damage. My first
father-in-law was an RCAF spit pilot with the RAF. All he ever told me was those planes were very fast and he used to do aerobatics etc. I have his RAF watch.
It was only by the suggestion of a British test pilot who suggested that the Merlin would be a natural engine for the Mustang. Just imagine if that event had not happened?
An American designed fighter plane with a British designed engine. This was a combination that was a major component of the Allied success in the war against Nazi Germany.
LOVE air shows but after all the accidents that continue to happen, next time I go I'll be sure to stand back a little further away from the normal viewing area.
@hootyhaha If you're going to do that then what's the point in going. May as well have someone video it for you and watch it at home. Get as close as you can and enjoy it. Think of it from the pilots point of view. These guys know that if they die that day they at least died doing something they LOVE and so did you. Air shows are the BEST and I will continue to get as close as I can, regardless.
Taking a motorcycle course when I was 18 we had 4 of them in formation fly over us in the evening. Maybe 40 feet above us... every single student/instructor stopped their bike and watched them fly into the distance. Beautiful to watch them head over farmland into the distance, gleams of sunlight coming off of them.
Germany, openly torturing and murdering,is a disgrace to humanity.See the generation born between 1930 and 1945.Most of them grew up with the"knowledge"to be the Masterrace, have the right to live at the expence of others. When they had to begin working in the 1950s,Germany started importing foreign workers, allowing them to stay the masterrace. They silenced the generation of their parents about ww2 crimes and persecuted the generation of their children into complete servitude to their state.
@pramboy09 Sure...I will try to find the video of the owner of one of them explaining that his is one of two remaining RR Mustangs. I was surprised to hear that myself. Just saw this comment today. I don't come here often. Hang on. I'll try to get that vid.
@SchwartzeBaron i guess one of the reasons this is so, i would have thought once packard started to licence produce the merlin there was no need for RR to produce for the mustang and most of their production would have gone to the spitfire, mosquito and lancaster seeing that most mustangs flying today are the d model most of them were produced from 44-45 when packard was in full swing.
@ianrodger21 The P-51 was an under performing aircraft with the Allison engine and the project was almost put aside until someone (British Test Pilot) thought to insert the Spitfire (Merlin) engine in it with the two stage blower for high altitude. With wing tanks, the aircraft was capable of six hours of flight. This increase in duration allowed the aircraft to escort bombers from the British Isles to Germany and opened the door to daylight bombing. A game changer at the time.
Think about this, no computer, fly by wire, air to air missles, just you against the enemy your skill VS his. Also we had 6 50cal browning in the wings. This is pure pilot VS pilot dog fighting, not the super video game planes we have now.
I was at an airshow about 6 or so years ago and they had various old warbirds making low passes like this. As usual they had music blaring from the stands and when the P-51 came by it was "Gimmie all your lovin" by ZZ Top. Gotta luv it!
Dan said:- "The most beautiful and deadly plane to ever grace the skies.... "

The P51 was excellent as a long range fighter escort with decent (not brilliant) dogfighting capabilities.
Rather have a P-38. Less cockpit noise, and your guns don't have to converge in a box, they go all the way straight out from the nose. Ultimate... ground attack... killing machine. And if one of my engines gets shot up, I've got a second to take me home.
@cobrachoppergirl What's wrong with this noise? It's the best sound in the world. And with a P38, couple shots to the tail and the thing flies apart and you dive into the ground in your little pod.
makes me proud to own a mustang... i love flying so much and would kill for a P51 but untill then i get my P51 on 4 wheels! no wounder they named the mustang after these amazing planes...
The P51 was a classic piece of American design.Once mated with the British Rolls Royce Merlin engine,it became the greatest piston engined fighter of WW2.A marriage made in heaven!
@M1GARRAND1 so u had 300 thousand soldiers armed with WW1 rifles and 60 tanks?cause that was Greece's military power back in 1940. why were u a superpower then and we werent?
British engineering it is, that engine was made for this plane, that sound of that Rolls Royce engine just gives me chills, one of the best warbirds ever, amazing...
excellent love the p-51 great plane, my grandad was a ball turret gunner for a b-17 and when he saw these beauties he knew that everything was going to be alright, he told me a story that his formation was on the way back from a raid over bremen, his plane's number 3 engine was out hit by a shell on the return trip two of the escort fighters stayed with his bomber till they were in the clear, he said they were a blessing from god angles sent to make sure he got back home to his wife
@LordReaper117 I also met a ball gunner who was on the Ploiesti(sp?) raid. He said he was the only original member of his crew who never got wounded or killed. He said they had hell to pay until they got regular fighter escort..he even got to shoot at a jet, but it was too fast.
Totally awesome story. Next time I think my job is too hard or I get frustrated, I'll remember that I could have been in a brutal war, fighting for survival. It really puts things into perspective and makes us appreciate the generations before us.
@LordReaper117 - My father flew 30 missions as pilot of a B-17. He once saw Me-262s working over the group in front of his. He looked up through the window above his head and saw the reflection of the wing tanks falling off the Mustangs. They fell on those 262s like a ton of bricks. man , all of u guys are blowing it out of perspective! at the time the Firt mustangs came out the merlin engine was availbale in mass production and it was a small way for the brittish to pay off their debts to the US. Bottom line: all politics, f' um!!!
Northrup Grumman (if i spelled it right) came up with the design. They put the British engine in there to make it as fast as it is/was at the end of the war (450 some odd, mph). And what the heck does Tom Cruise have to do with this video?
uh, Northrop and Grumman were two different companies in WWII. Grumman built Navy fighters and Northrup built the P-61 Black Widow. North American Aviation built the Mustang.
as sseeplane so correctly mentioned, North American Aviation designed and built the P-51 Mustang. Technically, all B,C,D,and K models sported the Packard (built in the USA) Merlin engine, as they were lic
