They always said the P-51 and Spit could go over 600 mph in a full pitch dive. Don't know if that's true or not but lots were found crashed without wings and no battle damage. My first

father-in-law was an RCAF spit pilot with the RAF. All he ever told me was those planes were very fast and he used to do aerobatics etc. I have his RAF watch.

Taking a motorcycle course when I was 18 we had 4 of them in formation fly over us in the evening. Maybe 40 feet above us... every single student/instructor stopped their bike and watched them fly into the distance. Beautiful to watch them head over farmland into the distance, gleams of sunlight coming off of them.

@ianrodger21 The P-51 was an under performing aircraft with the Allison engine and the project was almost put aside until someone (British Test Pilot) thought to insert the Spitfire (Merlin) engine in it with the two stage blower for high altitude. With wing tanks, the aircraft was capable of six hours of flight. This increase in duration allowed the aircraft to escort bombers from the British Isles to Germany and opened the door to daylight bombing. A game changer at the time.

excellent love the p-51 great plane, my grandad was a ball turret gunner for a b-17 and when he saw these beauties he knew that everything was going to be alright, he told me a story that his formation was on the way back from a raid over bremen, his plane's number 3 engine was out hit by a shell on the return trip two of the escort fighters stayed with his bomber till they were in the clear, he said they were a blessing from god angles sent to make sure he got back home to his wife

@LordReaper117 - My father flew 30 missions as pilot of a B-17. He once saw Me-262s working over the group in front of his. He looked up through the window above his head and saw the reflection of the wing tanks falling off the Mustangs. They fell on those 262s like a ton of bricks. Over the Channel, my father asked the leader of 4 Mustangs to give them a loop. All 4 pulled a loop as if tied together and then peeled off, one by one, to head for home. The bomber boys idolized the P-51 pilots.

Northrup Grumman (if i spelled it right) came up with the design. They put the British engine in there to make it as fast as it is/was at the end of the war (450 some odd, mph). And what the heck does Tom Cruise have to do with this video?
