I came across your lovely video while looking for Joni Mitchell's version,I love yours so much I featured it on my You tube channel! thanks for sharing your wonderful version.
Beautifully played and sung! 'River' is such a wonderful song and the harp is a nice instrument to accompany your voice with, i know that because i do it too (watch: Loriën on harp and guitar: me and my sister).
I like your voice, it is clear and sensitive in one!
Excellent really lovely mistakes and all. Merry xmas to you and to your friend Karen. I really enjoyed this. I love Joni Mitchell. Perhaps if you take requests i would love to hear you perform Kate Bush's Under the Ivy or This Womans Work. :)
That was just beautiful! "River" is one of my favorite songs, I love the harp, and you're voice is so sweet and lovely -- a perfect recipe for raising the hair on my neck and bringing tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing your talent!
Try a search for 'Christmas 1914'. Love the O'Carolan stuff. I play Tabhair Dom Do Lámh on melodeon. I think Matt Hyland is actually Scottish, although a lot of the Irish/English/Scottish songs are more or less interchangeable.
I think you're probably right about Matt Hyland...I keep hearing differing reports. Sadly, I can't go back and change the caption on the video (at least I put a ? next to it ;)). Maybe I should add an annotation...
Fairytale of New York, then possibly Merry Christmas by The Waitresses (after The River of course. There are loads of old traditional songs that are up there as well. But how can you play harp and sing as well as that? Impressed! What else can you sing and put your own stamp on like that?
My personal favorite is "Christmas in the Trenches" by John McCutcheon. In fact...maybe that'll be my Christmas Youtube offering this year. My family would FREAK OUT...it's a family favorite.
Oh, and to answer your other questions (duh, sorry!)...I've got some covers of Roy Zimmerman songs on this account you might enjoy (definitely my own stamp...don't think he ever expected covers on 'ukulele and mountain dulcimer! ;)) I also have a separate Youtube account that's a little more, um, traditional (look under "mollificent"). Thanks for the compliment!
Gosh, thanks! Playing the harp is really fun (and easier than everybody expects it to be!).
There was an article on Digg recently about how harp covers of pop songs are taking YouTube by storm...one guy even did a terrific cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing"! :)
I'd always thought River was best accompanied on piano but i've changed that to piano or harp. Your harp play and vocals are exquisite to hear. I heard no mistakes, just an interpretation of a beautiful song about love lost presented with love of the moment. You touched your friends heart with your gift and mines too. Thank you!
I'm a little late to the party, having just discovered your beautiful performance of this song on a hot August day in Hollywood. You've created such a perfect mood, I feel as if snow is falling outside! Your singing and playing, and your presence are so beautiful, and this song sounds wonderful on the harp. I am subscribed!
Beautiful. I discovered you via Roy Zimmerman, but with this Joni Mitchell cover I've decided I'm a fan of yours in general, not just as a particularly lovely re-interpreter of RZ :)
So glad you like it, thanks! I have to resist the urge to do a million Roy Z covers (I'm still tempted to do a few more, including his Joni Mitchell song once I can get my hands on it. ;))
In the wake of that Prop 8 California Supreme Court mess, I've been wandering around today, looking for a reminder that there is still beauty, clarity and -- above all -- tolerance on this troubled little planet. And hope, too.
Thanks for brightening this dark day with your harp and voice. Karen has a good friend in you... as does everyone who watches your videos. Further, ever further.
Hehe...thanks Niall! The tapestry helps a bit (it's REALLY echo-y without it). I think if I put up a few other blankets as baffles, it would work even better. Unless someone's doing laundry in the basement, which is directly below *eyeroll*. Or unless the refrigerator kicks in. T-Bone Burnett I'm not. :D
Hehehe...thanks! That's what happens when one decides to do a cover of a song one's never played before, on Christmas Eve, as a present. Not to mention that it's one of Joni's most beloved songs *gulp*. (Luckily the chords are pretty simple!) Gotta admit though, that last instrumental break...I had NO idea what I was about to play until I played it! :D
amazing job!

Brilliant. I was looking for a live version of Joni doing this (possibly the second best ever Christmas song), but I love this. Great!

Woot! Glad you like it (though obviously I'd never try to compete with Joni!). Just out of curiosity, if this song is #2, what's your favorite? :)
