Simply put, Daves and ideal drummer. He understands the voicing of all his heads and cymbals and the value of a rest as well as a 32nd run. If there was ever a way to unlock what it is to drum...Daves got it...NASTY
You what else is funny. . . is that this probably isn't very hard for him. He has been playing like this for decades! It looks to me as if he is not even breaking a sweat. Him and "the Alien" are my favorite drummers.
absolutely, I just sat there with my jaw hanging. I can play, sure enough, but I can't even begin to wrap my head around some of the stuff this guy does, just sick.
because dave is one of the few remaining drummers of the jazz era, which were and still are the most talented drummers ever, im not trying to knock punk/rock/hiphop or metal drummers because they all have talent, but jazz, swing and bebop drummers were a unique breed
OMG!! That was RETARDED!! He makes a pretty good argument for being the best technical drummer out there. I know a lot of people say he doesn't have a feel, but I think he grooves just fine. His chops, however, are on a completely different planet. Him, Thomas Lang, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Jojo Mayer might have chops up there with them, but not many others.
Does anyone know if he`s using fingercontrol,fx. at 3.35, or is all because of his moellertechnique? No matter what he`s playing or how fast, it allways seems effortless. He`s amazing!
It doesn't get much better than that, like someone earlier said it troubling to think that people happily go and buy britney spears or some other PR rubbish and they have never listened to the likes of dave weckl and Buddy Rich its so wrong!!
Ya know, Dave's the one who taught me that dynamics are more than just playing everything at the same volume level. For instance, you can hear almost every single beat he plays, and given that each piece of his kit responds differently (cymbals, cowbells, bongos, snare, floor toms, etc), it takes work to move around and sound even. Other drummers do this welkl, of course, but Dave flows smoothly from soft to loud, and makes it all sound natural.
You're right on the money. I've never seen Dave play a trible type feel like this before. He can literally do it all. He and guy's like JoJo Mayer are so musical, as well as master technitions!
Yeah, apparently art and the music business don't directly correlate. In fact, they hardly ever do.
Pity, because this is in a different world altogether to what the majority of people would call music, and yet this is music in it's purest form, to perfection.
at 5 min. in you are hearing 2 different patterns. groups of 32nd notes, 6 with hands and two with feets, and mixed up with 16th tuplets the 4 with hands and 2 with feets.
Check out two solos by Barrimore Barlow. One on Jethro Tull's Live Bursting Out CD, and the scottish influenced solo on side 2 of Thick as a Brick. That guy could really put together a fast, and technical, yet structured by parts drum solo! Amazing! A third hand pops out from somewhere!
I have been listening to Dave for many years and have almost every album. I have never seen him live until lately and always pictured his solos as tour de force with a lot of monster physical effort. The fact is he shows how to stick it with minimal effort. You could not do these riffs if all percussion techniques were not just perfect. He does not even look like he breaks a sweat! If this is just another day at the office, thats where I want to work. Thanks for the posting.
Weckl absolutely owns. show me one single drummer that can do what he does. show me one drummer that dave couldn't emulate......well well, look who's the best.
Not true becuase there is too much to master for one single drummer to become the greatest of all time. That is why there is a number of players we call the greatest of all time Dave Weckl being one of them
well said. I think Buddy is the only drummer still to date I've never seen out done by another. How is that? Just shows you how awesome that guy was or is.. He still live on!
Hi. I run this page. Just a reminder: drumming is part of something we call music. Music is not a competition. It is an art. Dave is one of many drummers who is artistic and compelling. Take what you can from each one and enjoy the ride. That's the spirit of the art.
drumming like everything else is personal preference. You have guys on other videos here that think Danny Carey is better than Weckl, Caliuta, bozzio, etc... LOL! gimme a break!! Carey's awesome, but he's not jazz drummer. I was born a drummer, meaning my Father taught me the ropes and I like most generations take it to the next level (generally speaking
reply to myself. Funny how (IMO) knowone still has de-throned Buddy Rich.. So much for taking it to the next level.. Its just amazing how great he was. Glad I saw him in 86
I saw a posting where a guy tried to tell me that no drummer is better than another it is just whatever fits your taste. I told him I disagreed...certain musicians are just hands down better than others. Does anybody else agree?
True, I'm not sure Weckl can play punk just as well Barker. Or if Barker can play latin as well as Weckl Can. I do believe that Weckl is the most chill and fluent drummer out there. :)
wen u get to Weckl's point in ability its not about whether u can, its if u want to...hes definately faster so i kno he would have no trouble playing cut time 2/4 beats that are extremely repatative
hehehe....yeah i think weckl can play punk..ive seen him play straight grooves...punk is easy to play cz its repetitive but what weckl plays is seriously hard to play... :)
astounding! talk about mastery of the instrument! Dave shreds unmercifully...and with incredible finesse. Makes it look easy, too; which we know it isn't...
Life's sometimes hard and human race is often disturbing but when heart, hands and head are used this way you can just be amazed and reconsider for a moment. Art is a wide concept but always strikes! Thank you very very much for posting.
This is why Dave Weckl is at the top of my list as an influence: his use of triplets and 16th (and even 32nd note) accent patterns is ALWAYS interesting to watch, and he plays with such smooth economy of motion. No matter what your primary musical genre of interest is, I think we can all agree that Dave is probably one of the best and most influencial drummers in the world.
it is amazing how deep dave weckl is. but because of the deepness of his solos, people who don't know anything about music don't understand his solos. too bad for them hahaha
I am 36 playing professionally since 1990 and each player is different but the depth of drumming that D. Weckl has reached with his Jazz/fusion blend is almost as deep as the ocean. The afro-cuban undercurrent in this solo was amazing. Don't forget the guy can groove with simple beats. This solo was drumsolo masterpiece if you understand and listen closer. I agree with Jay435's statement who touched on this a few posts back.
I've been playing for 40 years and have always been fascinated with the fusion of all genres, particularly latin/jazz/rock fusion and I've seen him several times. He is a true grand master of the drum kit and if you listen carefully, all of his solos have a groove. That's the point with him!! If you don't think there's a groove, study more, you're not there yet.
I honestly think he is one of the best players ever known to man! Yes you have all your Pearts and that but Dave is so technically perfect and his hands are lightning fast! My hero! I hope to play like him one day!
I met Dave at Mikell's in NYC back in 1985 when he was playing with Michel Camilo and Anthony Jackson. My drum teacher Gary Chester recommended I go down and see Dave and introduce myself. Dave was a a decent guy and a helluva drummer back then. After seeing this performance here, I can tell you he has grown tremendously. Absolutely Smokin!!!!
Weckl's the only drummer that sends chills up my spine. He's a phenomenal musician, technically impossible, and just...puts me at lost for words. *gapes in awe...*
This guy definitely has something extra, and is a true musician. I just wish he would exercise a little restraint when playing with bands. Even so, I've never heard a drum solo from him I didn't like!
Yeah I don't think I can pick winnners but I can pick favorites and Dave gets in the top 5 fav's and if there is some omniscient judgement to be made of who's the best drummer then I think Dave would be high up in the running. His playing here is so fluid and seamless.

Yeah I don't think I can pick winnners but I can pick favorites and Dave gets in the top 5 fav's and if there is some omniscient judgement to be made of who's the best drummer then I think Dave would be high up in the running. His playing here is so fluid and seamless.

I would say perfection, but then there's no such thing.

yea, its hard to give credit to a drummer without saying too much. Too many good drummers that have very different styles.
