NICE ONE!! THE NIGHT THIS WAS RECORDED ME AND MY MATE WERE WALKING DOWN LIME STREET IN LIVERPOOL, HANGING ABOUT, HAVING BUNKED OFF COLLEGE, AS WE DID MOST WEEKS TO GO TO THE LUNCHTIME SESSIONS AT THE CAVERN. AS WE WALKED ALONG A DARK BLUE EX AMBULANCE PULLED UP ALONG SIDE US AND ONE OF THE PASSENGERS ASKED FOR DIRECTIONS TO THE CAVERN. WE TOLD THEM HOW TO GET THERE. AT LUNCHTIME WE WENT DOWN THE CAVERN AND THE AMBULANCE WAS PARKED IN MATHEW STREET. THE KINKS WERE ON STAGE ~ IT WAS THEIR BUS!!
Very kool vintage clip! Charles Shaar Murray's comments notwithstanding, imho - The Kinks Rule! I do several humble Kinks tributes. Regards, '62 Mathew St. (Total Retro Rock)
Come On Charles..0:16 they were as much a blues band ,as The Beatles were a blues band. And even if they were... they made some hard rockin'blues tunes on their first 3 albums.
yeah, Got Love if you Want It is ridiculously amazing. They rock SO hard in it--I can't think of a sing other band with that kind of energy at the time. They are just the best ever!
Maybe they didn't fit the usual blues style, but they are just too unique to fit any style because they WERE their own style. Nothing else like em. And i am glad they didn't stay blues.
The Kinks never was the worst blues bandof the entire europe like the guy said. just listen to "Got Love If You Want It" (that is in their first album). you've got to admit that it's completely awesome. none of the 60's british R&B bands could do that.
Holy shit, even then Ray Davies could sing roll and roll way fucking better than just about anyone British other than John Lennon. Whoever is narrating this is a piece of shit.
Hemmin! That's Charlie Shaar Murray , one of the best music critics in the UK.
It's a well known fact that the Kinks were s h i t e live back then , hence the reason they often fought with each other onstage...it provided the better entertainment. Tremendous body of work behind them now , thanks to Ray Davies and his muse but I saw them at Strathclyde University in 1966/67 and was hugely disappointed. Local relatively unknown bands were better than the Kinks.
Please, the Kinks version of Milk Cow Blues is the best. This is all speculation. What happend by not playing the blues was that Dave Davies didn't get the opportunity to develop his chops as much and wasn't rightfully recognized as one of the greatest guitarists.
Music critics in the UK always just got in the way, full of themselves they believed they were as important as the music whereas they were never anything more than parasites, and at least in the 80s, parasites that were ultimately hugely detrimental to the hosts!
Wow this must be super rare. Especially how its at the Cavern Club and before they broke through. Any video footage from the pre-fame era of any band from the 60s is just irreplacably priceless.
I guess by then the Cavern Club was famous in the country so new bands like the Kinks would want to go and play there to see if they could get lucky too
That was very cool! In the States, the Kinks released Long Tall Sally on a small label called Cameo Parkway, who had mainly teen acts like Bobby Rydel and Chubby Checker. If you owned that record, you'd be lucky as it didn't chart. Lucky for us Ray started writing fantastic songs which did chart. Long Live The Kinks!!
WOW WASNT THIS CRAP , GOOD JOB THEY GOT BETTER AND ENDED SUPER STARS , NOW ONE OF MY TOP TEN BANDS , BUT IT SHOWS WHAT CAN BE DONE IF YOU KEEP TRYING

Horrible noise. Damned beatniks! I hope this sort of thing doesn't catch on. What's wrong with Perry Como??

The Cavern Club was referred to as "The Cellar Full of Noise." LOT of great English groups played there.

They definately got much better.... even to the point Jim Morrison copied one of their riffs, and he admitted it!

He is right: They were not a good blues band at all... I am glad they found out what they are really good at! :-)

@mbrianna66 I did not say the worst but far from being good at playing the Blues ...
not near The Pretty Things, The Bluesbreakers or others.

It´s true, i didn´t think in that way, the early covers of Kinks haven´t got that almighty quality of their own compositions.
Thanks for your commentary!

The program however is titled "My Generation". Please check it out and enjoy some fab Kinks history and folklore.
