  • Very pure and perfectly judged. What could be more beautiful?

  • I sang in the chorus for this when I performed in the Opera.. it was so sad.

  • ¡QUE SENTIMIENTO! WONDERFULL, WHAT A FEELING, BERÜHRT EINEN AUF GANZ BESONDERE ART, LOVE IT

  • God this is beautiful....

  • Really lovely, beautiful strings too.

  • I have tears in my eyes. Thank you for one of the most beautiful moments I have ever felt through music and for your luscious voice and incredible artistry.

  • GORGEOUSLY SUNG! one of the best versions I have ever heard!

  • I was so lucky to be in the Choir of Mahler's 2nd Symphony in Leipzig where she sang "Urlicht". I never heard of her before and fell in love with her voice from the first note she sang. She is absolutely fabulous.

  • @scantante1982 That Mahler 2nd Symphony from Leipzig conducted by Riccardo Chailly with Sarah Connolly as the alto soloist is coming out on DVD at the end of September (Naxos). They have put an extract up on YouTube. It looks and sounds marvellous and the choral work sounds great too. There are several choirs. Which is yours?

  • @voce63 It's the GewandhausChor.

  • She's an excellent singer. But what really makes her outstanding is the power of her performances. She's a true star !

  • I was SO lucky to be in the chorus in the Beethoven Missa Solemnis last Sunday when she was the mezzo soloist... I have just a bit of a crush on her!! A Wonderful, polite modest woman with a HUGE talent and gorgeous voice!

  • And who said that Baroque music had no emotion....

This is just a perfect piece of music. Captures what's happening perfectly. 5:13 is for me the best part.

  • @muulka Anyone claiming Baroque Music had no emotions is a Fool. The later Music that followed the baroque was trying to be subtle etc. to contrast itself with baroque Music, which mercilessly drove you to tears, had you jumping around happily or induced murderous hate... If any Music ever was capable of triggering emotions, it was baroque music.

  • @LutzDerLurch I wouldn't say those things...

And anyway, Baroque music wasn't all epic stuff- most of it was chamber music. Not very emotional. The composers didn't often put their own emotions into their work- that came with the Romantic period. Of course, there were always exceptions.

  • @muulka Well, Calm is an Emotion too.

  • I love her voice! She sings beautifully.

  • just perfect....

  • Recitative Thy hand, Belinda, darkness shades me, On thy bosom let me rest, More I would, but Death invades me; Death is now a welcome guest.

[edit] Aria When I am laid, am laid in earth, May my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in thy breast; Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.

  • 1:30 - Damn cougher! Otherwise....breathtakingly haunting and awfully sad.

  • Why can't there be a Proms-type event in the States??! >:(

  • @sadiacatherine ..."beauty is in the eye of the beholder"...:)

  • In this aria, Connolly's voice really reminds me of Tebaldi.

  • RAD!

  • this is AWESOME!

  • WOW My heart stoped ......

  • Saw her today in Dido and Aneas in Amsterdam... she was outstanding!!!

  • That was absolutely astonishing. How beautiful interpretation.

  • I'm going to see her in two weeks, in Amsterdam! I'm really looking forward to it!

  • @ElentariRose I saw her today in Amsterdam as well.... amazing, wasn't she?

  • @iiiiiccccc She certainly was! It was great!

  • Perfection.

  • Amazing performance, heart taking.....

  • Anyone have a link or copy of this song by chance? It is a really beautiful piece and I would love to put it on my Ipod :)

  • @pjester08 Amazon.com has MP3 tracks or the complete CD version (Chaconne label) of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with Sarah Connolly as Dido.

  • I'd love to know what the 8 dislikes don't enjoy about this interpretation.

  • @heula1 It could be a variety of things. The tempo, the pacing, the breath control, the use of ornaments (tasteful, in my opinion), the orchestra, the vibrato, etc.

  • fantastico

  • I'm not a fan of Opera...but dangggg this is a good and beatiful song.

  • @emscott32

    Amen

  • This song is very sad... and Sarah depicts the mood very well. I can almost cry. Her plea...

  • Finally, technique and passion meet!

  • This woman in a real inspiration.

  • the orchestra is pretty terrible at playing purcell

  • Probably the closest anyone has come to matching the sublime performance by Dame Janet Baker in the 60's under Mackerrass

  • I agree totally. This is magnificent.

  • Someone told me once that this aria was dictated by God himself to Purcell...I agree; and also I must agree that Sarah Connolly is one of His angels singing it for us!!!!!...thank you for sharing this wonderful and touching interpretation of Miss Connolly....BRAVOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I was so not expecting that!!! What a magnificent voice!!!!

  • Her website is very cool! And for the people who didn't like this video, what planet are you from?

  • She is great!

  • aweful.

  • stunning performance, Sarah...and the accompaniment spectacular--I've been transported early to Heaven~!

  • Look at that bling!!!! I mean that is gorgeous jewellery! Does anybody know anything about it??

Just seen a masterclass from Sarah, U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E!

  • She is so lovely! A lovely person too!

  • Gorgeous, moving performance! Brava, Sarah!

  • sublime!

  • Wow, that must have been pressure - doing probably the most recognisable aria, Last Night of the Proms, millions watching. Chapeau.

  • @pianomags BEAUTIFUL COMMENT, AND BRILLIANTLY CAPTURED~!

  • shes amazing

  • Kills me everytime....gonna go cry a little now.... :(

  • I thought this was beautiful; thank you for sharing this.

  • im certainly no cultured opera critic, however, i know what my ear likes! and my ear loves this. leontyne and sarah, 1 and 2. no one else comes close... none the less, i will keep looking

  • @beginagain314 There's a recording of Kirsten Flagstad singing this aria, I have yet to find anything comparable to it. Jessye Norman as well does a very nice interpretation.

  • @tenor220 You are 100% about the Kirsten Flagstad version. I originally heard that version in my Music Appreciation Class in college and I was so moved by it that I still have the CD. No performance has yet to match the emotion felt from the Flagstad version!

  • @jking1974 Janet Baker's version for Decca Records is amazing too!

  • @jking1974 and Emma Kirkby's too!

  • You should all go to Sarah's website - it's so informative! She really, really worked hard! She is definitely not an overnight success, she was well into her 30's before she started seeing real exposure... a real inspiration to all of us out here who also have talent and persist in NOT keeping it under a bushel!

  • I agree! The autobiography section is worth a read. You have to admire her pluck and sense of humour about how long it all took. A real inspiration :)

  • She has so smooth voice...

  • @rlee1976 I agree, she's just great! And she certainly is getting plenty of exposure in that red dress!

  • @rlee1976 as a twenty-something who has trained in classical singing, it is so encouraging to see someone who has not given up. maybe someday I can start training again.

  • bravissima!

  • A DVD of the Covent Garden April 2009 production of "Dido and Aeneas" starring Sarah Connolly has now been released on Opus Arte.

  • @melodiaavis Thanks for the tip, melodiaavis!!!

  • beautiful voice color, gorgeous woman.

  • i may be hearing things, but isn't the ground bass basically playing the downward spiral motif from nine inch nails' album of the same title?

  • How wonderful to be alive years after this was originally written and to hear it sung as honestly and beautifully as this.....

  • I love her necklace!

  • Butler and Wilson. I've got the multi-coloured version.

  • BRAVO!!!

  • Bravo!!

    What a fantastic aria!

  • she is a good singer, but it was not emotional for me

  • @margotlorena I know performances that are not emotional enough, rather mechanical, but something that is too emotional? Never heard of.

  • I said that it was not emotional to me. I didn't make me feel anything. That's my opinion.

  • @margotlorena Ah, I see, then I got you wrong ^^

  • Truly amazing.

  • very beautiful with great emotion. brava. fl could sing like her, l shall be so happy.

  • Lovely! Thanks for uploading ;-)

  • Connolly is absolutely brilliant , thanks !
