The Bill has passed both houses and is on the way to Arnold's desk!
and for all those Liars attempting to paint this bill as an attempt by O.D.s to do eye surgery. Shame on you. We weren't trained in surgery and never wanted to. This bill was to allow us to treat glaucoma as we are trained to do.
This bill would allow optometrists to do EYE SURGERY. That's absolutely insane!
Optometrists do not have medical or surgical training. Shame on anyone who supports this bill: your greed has overtaken your moral obligation to give patients the best care possible.
I agree with scatman- it's all about the money- Ophthalmologist's desire to keep it for themselves. My mother did not have glaucoma but was treated for years by a greedy Ophthalmologist. Good luck to the optometrists!
What a snow job! If only Optometrists would actually train for the care they try to give. It is, indeed, all about money, and the attempt to grab more by the OD's. This poor lady could see only on doctor, an ophthalmologist, whom she could trust much more, because the MD would have more training.
I think the public is growing tired of ophthalmology's smear tactics. Optometrists with 4-5 years of doctoral eye training can't Rx as many eye medications as an MD with 1 week of eye training?
Its all about money and protecting turf, not about what's best for the patient. Optometrists provide excellent care and are trained to do much more than they are allowed.

This bill will expand optometrists ability to perform eye surgery and LASIK procedures.
Untrained and unskilled people practicing medicine without a license. Also, He lied; they currently are not trained in medications. Safety issues......
It's odd that California, usually a national leader, lags so far behind in allowing patients to receive the care they need from their family optometrist. Sadly, ophthalmologists are determined to keep their monopoly, to keep their prices high. It's a matter of turf, not training. Other states have allowed optometrists to treat eye diseases for many years. Patients receive good care, close to home, while saving money. It's past time for California citizens to have the same advantage.
not an attempt for optometrists to do eye surgery?
exact language of the bill:
b)Use any TPA he or she determines to be necessary.
c)Perform minor surgical procedures not requiring general anesthesia
any test or procedure necessary for diagnosis of the visual system
d)Perform lacrimal irrigation and dilatation necessary for diagnosis of the visual system
e)Injections necessary for diagnosis and treatment
btw...those are injections INTO the eye.

Excellent video. It would be great to see this bill passed for Doctors of Optometry to practice what they have been taught.
