This is the Portnoy I miss. Not the Megalomaniac Narcissist that tainted DT w/ his ego which was a product of his success. If you watch dream theater making of black clouds you see how much of an asshole he becomes & when you listen to the album you can hear how "stale"(MP) DT becomes.
@nmillwater33 after?! their most successful albums/critically acclaimed albums were images and words, awake and scenes from a memory! most of which were before-hand :D
@MulletMan3108 I'm just saying scenes from a memory is my favorite album and they were consistant on every album after that.awake and falling into infinity are alright but they hadnt really found their sound until scenes
@nmillwater33 oh yeah scenes is awesome. falling into infinity was really beyond their control as to why its sounded so...toned down. although I wouldnt say they were consistent. six degrees and train of though are considered good, but then octavarium was a bit...muse - like and systematic chaos was pretty shocking. thats considered their worst album (worse than falling into infinity hah). and the BCSL was...pretty mediocre. as most reviwers desribed - no progression, no steps back
@MulletMan3108 I've only been a dream theater fan for about 2 years so BCSL was new when I bought it. I didn't live through the realease of every album so I just judged them on how good they were not how they compared to other albums. And i fucking love systematic chaos how can you say that's their worst album??
@nmillwater33 well according to most DT fans and professional reviews systematic chaos and falling into infinty are considered their weakest releases. to me SC sounds too muse like and too metal. plus some of the instrumentals are just random noise in my opinion. I know DT have always been about showcasing their technical skill, but I think SC just takes the biscuit of 'technical wankery', at times. dont get me wrong Dt are my fav band ever.
@metallicguns95 they actually don't want to draw that much attention, they want to stay who they are. they dont want to be like metallica or something..
This is the most beautiful thing that Mike Portnoy, or any artist, has ever said.
I believe it's very difficult to keep that spirit, it takes lots of guts and balls.
Dream Theater has never disappointed me, in any record.
Funny thing is, I always hate every new album of them, at first, but with time I realize how much moron I am and that record becomes my favourite untill they put out a new one. And so on!
This is what i love about metal. I'd rather be a metal artist than hit it big on MTV. At least metal bands have devoted fans. I know a lot of us hate justin beiber. but take comfort in the fact that while justin beiber will slip into obscurity eventually, iron maiden, dream theater, and many other metal bands will still be awesome and continue to gain fans through generations.
It's really weird how they said that the band was gonna break up, because most people who listened to the album they created back then, they thought was shit.
Now when you look back at those albums, you start to appreciate them more.
Its a good thing they didn't get into the pop genre, they would've been forgotten about like an old toy when you buy a new one.
DT is the best, sure they're songs are old, but when you get one of their tunes stuck in your head, it becomes alive again
Quite honestly, I don't want Dream Theater to fall into the "Popularized Music Industry" bullshit. They're amazing, talented artists that don't get enough recognition, but they need to stay that way. They're too good to fall for the whole pop-culture style of music. Keep making what you're making right now, DT. Keep being the best fuckin' band I've ever heard! \m/
they're not mainstream cool, they're just metal cool we're anyone who knows anything about metal and actual talent knows that this is a "cool" band. godspeed Portnoy.
@NBenvy1 that channel is awesome they be airing all the crazy shows that use to come on..it may be only re-runs..but its alot better then whats on the original MTV
fuck poopyface. transatlantic and LTE will continue strong. not to mention his solo/collab material. even IF Mike is ever "done" you still will have never even BEGUN.
@Johnpjm Not SO real after a while (to my ears, after train of thought). They ended up becoming slaves to what the average fans expects them to sound like, with all the metal cliches, teenage oriented lyrics and power metal vocals. As far as i know, that was the main reason that drove mike away from DT. And they are still doing the same ol shit after all, instead of letting the new blood (Mangini) give a breath of fresh air to the band
@cherryorchards I fully agree with this. My three favorite records by them (Awake, Metropolis Part II and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence) are all before that period, and while the song Octavarium (and a few off the same record) is good, as well as a few here and there from SC and BCaSL, they really changed for the negative. ADToE is quite a good record though.
the amazing this is, i have no idea how "pull me under" was the only song regarded as a hit, because i listen to images and words frequently, and every freaking song is perfect and amazing. what is wrong with people??
because pull me under is the most commercial song on it. its all 4/4 time, kind of standard formula. nothing over the top: perfect for uneducated musical listeners
Definitely. My 2 favorites have always been metropolis and under a glass moon. But, frankly, i've always (kind of) hated pull me under. But, yeah, metropolis is insane.
@phahq It's more about what is WRONG with record companies. They don't like to take ANY risks. They also know that it is easier to manipulate and CONTROL acts like Britney Spears and Chrstine Agulera. When you have band like Dream Theater that is fully of strong minds and personalities, they have been fairly control-resistant and I am glad about that. : )
the irony lies in the fact that, because they don't wanna be cool, but are the prog metal gods that they are, they are actually the coolest guys ever. they're so technically perfect, and their music is so unreachable for the average mind, that they are gods among men. and once you're a god, there's not much left to be.
best interview ive ever seen of him, or maybe anybody of dream theater. I like when he talks about how they just keep going and didn't give in to record execs.
Zomby Woof? I guess thats a para phrase to Frank Zappa. "Zombie Wolf", no? I was in a "Zappa ensamble" at highschool (music school in Stockholm, Sweden) and I remember when we started with that tune. Man thats funny. I have a transcription of the tune (from when I played in the Zappa ensamble in highschool) and the title is misspelled :) Thanks for the info, I wont forget it ;)

Although I don't really like Tool, you are definitely right. It's always nice to see some bands who manage to avoid whatever plague that most "mainstream" groups seem to catch.
I think he meant more along the lines of; singer not working out, commercially it didn't make a lot of money at that point, they didn't tour that much, their fanbase wasn't expanding too much either.
Failure from the production point of view..the sound was crappy and they felt a huge difference to images and words, plus the record company dindt support them.
Mike, Mike... don't be so hard on yourself. Dream Theater IS cool. You guys are Hella-Cool and you're the greatest band on the planet. Come on! You guys are the Coolest because you don't try to be cool. You do what you love, and the fans love your music.... so that is extra special cool. Although, I have to tell you, I wasn't overly thrilled with Black Clouds and Silver Linings. I still bought it, though.
well i like BCSL better than Systematic chaos but from systematic the song that does it to me is drak eternal night! idk i just think the composition from black clouds is slightly better
I prefer Black Clouds just, the thing that tips it for me is Repentance on Systematic Chaos. I just find that such a weak song on such a good album but Black Clouds every songs gets me everytime, especially the first and last songs.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
oh yeah dude i love them! They add me in myspace like 2 years ago they weren't even that famous! I always knew they had a great career in front of them! I love scale the summit
I'm sorry but STS is really not that great. They're a talented group but their music is kinda stale. It's not very tasteful or different. It's like each song is influenced by the one before it or something.
i believe there are many good musics in the world.. but they are special to me. coz they don't only make some 3 minutes songs.. they show the maximum in their music. i came to know DT when i was 14 and now i'm 23 and i haven't had a week without listening to some dream theater sience than :)
and sometimes i only listen to their albums for a while..
to say the truth i like it too, but the album that i listen to less times.
and the another thing is: i didn't like the voice of Dominici :(
you can compare the voice of him to Labrie's on "Live At The Marquee" with listening to "Another Hand - Killing Hand" i like that song much more than the original with the 1st singer
i liked his voice on album version, like status seeker i like his voice better than labrie~s in that but the rest i like labire better! Not to say their first singer i forgot his name, one of their childhood friends, i liked his voice a lot like bruce dickinson and geoff tate
and about what you said.. i like the voice of Dickinson too, but i don't really like Iron Mayden.. i like Bruce's solo albums, and IM - Brave New World coz there the sound is similar to his solo albums
that was their seconf singer, they had another one before they even recorded an album, it was petrucci's and myung's childhood friend his name is chris collins. Charlie doen't have a bruce dickinson voice, if u have the score dvd they show him in the documentary on the second dvd
what I appreciate in the early albuns is not the techinical side of it. it s the quality of the songs, they actually made sense. nowadays dream theater is all about techinical skills and you see it really easily in the solos they make now. its all about fast fast fast, no feeling at all. now it's only riff after riff, they make it easy for the metal fans to like. where are the songs like another day, erotomania, voices, scarred.. dream theater used to be intense, true masterpieces of the mind,
wow. i agree with the first part, i love they're early albums, but dude, octavarium's concept? scenes from a memory? there's LOTS of feeling, no matter how much metal elements they want in their music.
they still are the problem is that you don't get this new songs
example: constant motion talks about life specially about mikes life. how we are always running and sometimes don't see whats in front of us. just like u when u wrote that comment ;-)
they're musics still have that meaning they had! they're not fast fast fast!
There are a lot of slow emotional solos on the new album. I think the solos have always been well balanced on their albums, with the exception of Train of Thought, which was mostly fast soloing.
Listen to In presence of enemies, ministry of lost souls, repentace, these walls, octavarium, and now on the new album wither, the best of times, the count of tuscany, there are plenty of toned down songs from the new albums too, plenty of soul id say, so think a bit before stating wrong facts, ALL about ...? Yeah.... right...
pull me under is a great song. actually it is perfect. if all the crapy DT fans opened their ears and listened to the crazy keyboard / bass rythm in pull me under and listened to probably the best vocal in a dt song, dream theater wouldn't be making the last 3 albuns of pure shit and bad taste
eh fuck you just becuz they have gotten a little darker and heavier and a lil less technical in some songs doesnt mean its "pure shit" or "bad taste" i personally like the past 3 albums as much as any of the earlier albums.
jonas brothers fans are labeling me a poser just because i listen to dream theater, metallica, black sabbath, ozzy osbourne, megadeth, pink floyd, the beatles, glen campbell including children of bodom and slayer
He only spins because he has nothing to do during the long instrumental sections of majority of their songs. He just tries to find a way to waste time until his que to sing comes again. Like in there Scenes From A Memory LIVE DVD, he just whacks the Tambourine during the long instrumental sections xD
Thats why Dream Theater IS so cool, they haven't just stuck to simple chords and trying to avoid their instruments. I think their dedication (and skill of course) is what make them so awesome and inspirational
One of the only non sellout, hard working bands, their old school with the ways that they approach the business end and if more bands could be like that, the music industry would be wayyy better
Thats exactly what metallica did, they gave up making long and hard songs and sticked to the secure and popular path (the dark side of the rock), thats why DT is better, theyre stronger as a band, stronger with their style, not just give up with a fking company, just saw a documental about metallica, man they were drunk addcits, didnt care about music, just chasing the rockstar position, and whit DT its all about the fans, damn i support these guys
He may be straightforward but he certainly always gets his message, emotions, and meaning across. I like Petrucci's stuff the best, I think, he's a really good lyricist if you ask me.
he sucks! lol jk i'd know nothin about drumming if i meant that, mike is pretty much the person anyone can consider an inspiration, he is the shit!!!!!!
Not being cool is the way to go! Wise words MP, I agree

oh yeah dude i love them! They add me in myspace like 2 years ago they weren't even that famous! I always knew they had a great career in front of them! I love scale the summit
sannoryujin 2 years ago
Are you high? Two years ago they were as famous as they ever had been.
DavidAcampora 2 years ago 2
I'm sorry but STS is really not that great. They're a talented group but their music is kinda stale. It's not very tasteful or different. It's like each song is influenced by the one before it or something.
Shabockery 2 years ago
he's right :)
i believe there are many good musics in the world.. but they are special to me. coz they don't only make some 3 minutes songs.. they show the maximum in their music. i came to know DT when i was 14 and now i'm 23 and i haven't had a week without listening to some dream theater sience than :)
and sometimes i only listen to their albums for a while..
love them!!!

Chris Collins, but they booted him out REAL fast.
ryanyunck 2 years ago
but i loved Dream and Day, why did he say it wasn't a success?
aligatorsandwitch72 2 years ago
to say the truth i like it too, but the album that i listen to less times.
and the another thing is: i didn't like the voice of Dominici :(
you can compare the voice of him to Labrie's on "Live At The Marquee" with listening to "Another Hand - Killing Hand" i like that song much more than the original with the 1st singer
tsabszy 2 years ago
i liked his voice on album version, like status seeker i like his voice better than labrie~s in that but the rest i like labire better! Not to say their first singer i forgot his name, one of their childhood friends, i liked his voice a lot like bruce dickinson and geoff tate
sannoryujin 2 years ago
his name is Charlie Dominici
and about what you said.. i like the voice of Dickinson too, but i don't really like Iron Mayden.. i like Bruce's solo albums, and IM - Brave New World coz there the sound is similar to his solo albums
tsabszy 2 years ago
that was their seconf singer, they had another one before they even recorded an album, it was petrucci's and myung's childhood friend his name is chris collins. Charlie doen't have a bruce dickinson voice, if u have the score dvd they show him in the documentary on the second dvd

Dream theater? your fucking cool now :-)

not of the fingers
bahbuhbih 2 years ago
what I appreciate in the early albuns is not the techinical side of it. it s the quality of the songs, they actually made sense. nowadays dream theater is all about techinical skills and you see it really easily in the solos they make now. its all about fast fast fast, no feeling at all. now it's only riff after riff, they make it easy for the metal fans to like. where are the songs like another day, erotomania, voices, scarred.. dream theater used to be intense, true masterpieces of the mind,
bahbuhbih 2 years ago
wow. i agree with the first part, i love they're early albums, but dude, octavarium's concept? scenes from a memory? there's LOTS of feeling, no matter how much metal elements they want in their music.
thesilentcircus789 2 years ago 5
they still are the problem is that you don't get this new songs
example: constant motion talks about life specially about mikes life. how we are always running and sometimes don't see whats in front of us. just like u when u wrote that comment ;-)
they're musics still have that meaning they had! they're not fast fast fast!
dragon force are. and dragon force sucks
peace
dpsantos1994 2 years ago 2
I like songs because i like them, not because they're supposed to mean what the composer said it should mean
bahbuhbih 2 years ago
it isn't what you said in the other comment
anyway... dt rulezzz :)
dpsantos1994 2 years ago 2
There are a lot of slow emotional solos on the new album. I think the solos have always been well balanced on their albums, with the exception of Train of Thought, which was mostly fast soloing.
pongopigmayiss 2 years ago
Listen to In presence of enemies, ministry of lost souls, repentace, these walls, octavarium, and now on the new album wither, the best of times, the count of tuscany, there are plenty of toned down songs from the new albums too, plenty of soul id say, so think a bit before stating wrong facts, ALL about ...? Yeah.... right...
AMartins92 2 years ago
pull me under is a great song. actually it is perfect. if all the crapy DT fans opened their ears and listened to the crazy keyboard / bass rythm in pull me under and listened to probably the best vocal in a dt song, dream theater wouldn't be making the last 3 albuns of pure shit and bad taste
bahbuhbih 2 years ago
eh fuck you just becuz they have gotten a little darker and heavier and a lil less technical in some songs doesnt mean its "pure shit" or "bad taste" i personally like the past 3 albums as much as any of the earlier albums.
wadethemage 2 years ago 2
I agree with you man.
Even though they may not show their full technical potentials, their style is still 100% in their songs.

Dream Theater not cool?
James LaBrie is the coolest motherfucker on the planet. Have you seen the way he spins around while running across the stage? Now that's badass.
ryanyunck 2 years ago 5
He only spins because he has nothing to do during the long instrumental sections of majority of their songs. He just tries to find a way to waste time until his que to sing comes again. Like in there Scenes From A Memory LIVE DVD, he just whacks the Tambourine during the long instrumental sections xD
McDiddy99 2 years ago 5
Thats why Dream Theater IS so cool, they haven't just stuck to simple chords and trying to avoid their instruments. I think their dedication (and skill of course) is what make them so awesome and inspirational

I could not have put it more perfectly

One of the only non sellout, hard working bands, their old school with the ways that they approach the business end and if more bands could be like that, the music industry would be wayyy better

nothing else to say but amazing
usernamenoe 3 years ago 4
Pure awesomeness, absolutely amazing indeed.
Simen0303 3 years ago 3
Thats exactly what metallica did, they gave up making long and hard songs and sticked to the secure and popular path (the dark side of the rock), thats why DT is better, theyre stronger as a band, stronger with their style, not just give up with a fking company, just saw a documental about metallica, man they were drunk addcits, didnt care about music, just chasing the rockstar position, and whit DT its all about the fans, damn i support these guys

Nah, if he thinks they're a self moving machine, they're a self moving machine :D
Ironic that he's such a brilliant lyricist but can be caught with a loss for words.
KoryWB 3 years ago 2
Maybe because he's not a brilliant lyricist, :-P
He's great, don't get me wrong, but his lyrics are too straightforward for my taste. Bring the poetry of John Myung back, guys!!!
P0mt3 3 years ago
He may be straightforward but he certainly always gets his message, emotions, and meaning across. I like Petrucci's stuff the best, I think, he's a really good lyricist if you ask me.
KoryWB 3 years ago
I agree with P0mt3, Lifting Shadows and Trial of Tears for example are two of their most brilliant songs...
Conroy15 2 years ago 2
Glad to see a fellow Myung fan around these parts. ;)
P0mt3 2 years ago
How can I not be, I'm a bassist myself and Myung's one of the best..
Conroy15 2 years ago
Also-fucking-lutely.
Other notable bass players in my opinion:
Justin Chancellor
Geddy Lee
Chris Squire
Victor Wooten
etc.

Cant forget Stu Hamm!
