Its good to know I'm not the only one calling the main gun the pea shooter. I do that all the time with the Gradius and R-Type series.
As for the "sweet spots" in level 6, the entire Gradius series is pretty notorious for those.

Have you ever played fantasy zone? I'm amazed at how different the NES version is from the arcade version! (of lifeforce not fantasy zone!)

Yeah baby! *Sigh* they just don't make good side schollers shooters like Life Force anymore, without a doubt one of my all time favorite games! I used to use that same sweet spot all the time hehe.

I think Salamander Deluxe pack for PS & Saturn contain these games but i could be wrong.

I never actualy owned one in the first place. My friends often brought theirs over to my place, or we would rent one for weekends.
