What mess? The note is an admission to guilt for a tail light. Mary has several witnesses (Rose, Sandra, Pearl), police offensers as witnesses to no fault, and a note that absolves her for the other damages. These women are funny, but come on ladies, think...

Mary sure used to wear some old dresses back then! When I was young, and first learned how to sow, I used to make my dolly's dresses out of (my granny's) those old time dresses, like Mary would wear, lol!
