The way I see it, these people are insanely selfish, don't deserve what they have, and frankly probably not the type of people I would feel comfortable around my kids. But, they are only human. why can't I have someone like Dr. Drew, and a rehab group that care about me. I have no one, my husband has abandoned me, turned my children against me, I live in the study and no one talks to me, I've been suffering from childhood abuse, I developed Borderline Personality disorder, drank and started using drugs, pot, then bennies, and cocaine, but stopped mostly, breakdown, hosp. and presc. drugs. 30 years later I'm still on presc.drugs, deep depression, some violence, I HAVE NO ONE, WHY?

I've been through addiction, and I wouldn't call it a disease. I'm not saying that it's purely down to free will, but calling it a disease is inaccurate. If you have cancer you can't just one day decide not to have cancer. If you're an addict, you can decide to try and turn your life around.
You become an addict by becomming dependent, physically and/or mentally. You don't contract diseases for being dependent upon having a disease. AMM call it otherwise for subjective & 'liberal' purposes...

What is problematic with Drew is he is a doctor and a lot of people think doctors know it all when it comes to medicine when no doctor knows it all and medical science is not a perfect science and never will be. Drew should use terminology such as alleged disease or suspected disease if he wants to think it is a disease. Saying addiction is a chronic disease as he does as if it is fact when there is no science to support that is misleading at the least.

In this US, at least, we place far too much value on the opinions of doctors and celebrities. Cigarettes and alcohol kill more people annually than ALL illicit drugs combined (check CDC for stats) but the media focuses almost exclusively on drugs like cocaine, marijuana (kill rate of 0) and heroin (most deaths are from OD, not long term use)
what?! that's bull crap, 72 hours minimum detainment for a 5150. and even so a judge has to rule whether or not that the patient actually did meet the criteria. If the judge has reason to believe that the admittance of the patient by force was necessary, and makes his judgement; he the yields the power to discharge the patient to the attending psychologist. If a 5150 is requested and issued, then the patient was unable to make rational decisions and could not take care of themselves.....

I was turned off by Dr. Drew around 4-years ago because once a young lady called the show and was clearly depressed and thinking about throwing in the towel. I feel that Dr. Drew is a good, kind-hearted, intelligent man who truly believes what he's doing is the right thing. However I think he's sorely mistaken about just about everything, due to the fact that he learned about addiction from a medical textbook, written by an ex-doctor who learned about addiction from an OLDER medical textbook, etc etc.
The problem is when actual addicts try to share their views on addiction/recovery, the doctors say "oh he's just a junkie he doesn't know anything"
We look at addicts as falling if they aren't motivated but we don't look at a Doctors failure if they can't cure a patient. Maybe a doctor isn't motivated to heal - have they pushed themselves past what they know to be true. I've watched this show, although good clearly the doctor can't recognize his own failures when an addict fails. When he can recognize his own failures he will have the perfect rehab clinic.

The staff on the show is without a doudt undertrained. They dont no how to interact with detoxing and mental disorders, they assume all of the patients are just arguing because there brats. The two floor tech ladies are horrible, one is a bitch to the core, it's almost like she is mad because these celebrities are taking the spotlight, the other blonde floortech is always arguing and is just as emotional as the detoxing people, that never works.
The more I learn about Dr Drew's methods, the more I become suspicious about him. I don't doubt his integrity, i just question his methods, most of which are NOT based on sound science and are definitely NOT shared by the majority of psychiatrists. Using SPECT scans to diagnose "organic brain dysfunction" is truly bizarre and his insistence on seeing EVERYTHING through the 'addiction as disease' model prevents him from even recognizing severe psychiatric cases, like Keri Ann, for example...

Physically picking up a drug and using it is not a disease. The disease is the torturous compulsion to use. Depleting your life savings and violently crying and screaming while you drive to a dealer's house. You cannot control these urges. If the devil exists, he exists in the form of drug addiction. However, addiction and cancer are not comparable. Cancer patients have no choice in the matter AT ALL. No one can lock them in a room and cure their cancer. Addiction IS a disease though.

I have no one, my husband has abandoned me, turned my children against me, I live in the study and no one talks to me, I've been suffering from childhood abuse, I developed Borderline Personality disorder, drank and started using drugs, pot, then bennies, and cocaine, but stopped mostly, breakdown, hosp. and presc. drugs. 30 years later I'm still on presc.drugs, deep depression, some violence, I HAVE NO ONE, WHY?

97% of those completing treatment are drinking and using again within a year of release. I say this from an informed standpoint as a former rehab counselor and as a long-term recovered alcoholic. Clean up your own mess.

I've been through addiction, and I wouldn't call it a disease. I'm not saying that it's purely down to free will, but calling it a disease is inaccurate. If you have cancer you can't just one day decide not to have cancer. If you're an addict, you can decide to try and turn your life around.
You become an addict by becomming dependent, physically and/or mentally. You don't contract diseases for being dependent upon having a disease. AMM call it otherwise for subjective & 'liberal' purposes...

I agree 100% that drug ADDICTION is a disease, once ur body is addicted its now physical not just mental and VERY hard 2 break...BUT The First time drugs are introduced into ur body guess what PPL it IS a CHOICE, maybe u are depressed, wanna escape reality, or just tryna be cool with your friends, but u Choose that 1st hit.

Like when that Rachel chick was telling him she doesnt always buy Janice's crap and that she is sometimes just seeking attention. he's all... Full disclosure, I rarely do any drugs. and almost never drink. LSD and weed have saved my life in some ways. So has salt, fire and water.

You guys are fools. Addiction has been recognized by the AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION as a DISEASE... Really, do your research. Addiction kills more people than most other diseases. It attacks your brain AND your body. It is NOT affected by self-will. Plus, look up the DEFINITION of the word disease before making your own judgement calls on things as serious and deadly as addiction. Or try asking someone who ACTUALLY IS an addict. You really have no basis for judgement.

@carlyjenna1618 drug addiction is "affected" by self-will. U have to first WANT to break addiction & find the strength to go thru with detox and withstand withdrawal. I do believe drug addiction can be sort of looked at as a disease, and thats because it becomes physical, but Most ppl (most anyway) are not born addicted to drugs or even forced to do drugs in the first place. Sum r depressed, wanna "feel" good, escape reality etc, sum are followers or think its cool. either way 1st times a choice

That's a pathetic cop-out used by people who do not want to take responsibility for their choices and actions. We all make choices in life and have our own problems. We made the choice to deal with those problems by using drugs. No one held us down and put a pipe/bottle in our mouths WE did that, as a solution to our problems. and must face our problems so to not need a escape

@canefan17 Mental illness you could say, not a physical one, although you do get physically sick from withdrawal.
You don't walk by a crack head and catch an uncontrolable urge to stick a pipe in your mouth, you don't have sex with a drunk woman and get infected with alcoholism. You become these things by repeatedly making poor choices you make the choice to use until it is the only choice you know how to make. so yes, you could say someone who repeatedly makes bad choices is mentally ill

I have GONE through a rehab program and the people that have that kind of thinking relapse and do not have long term success in beating their addiction.
The "It's not my fault, I have a disease" is the most pathetic excuse out there.
And as far as it being a mental illness it is in fact easily curable with the right Treatment most mental illnesses are not they are permanent

An (ex)addict like my self chose to stick a pipe/ bottle in his mouth until it was the only choice I new how to make. I was an alcoholic and drug addict because of poor choices I made NOT because of a disease.
Drugs were not the problem, they were the cure, not a good one as they simply led to more problems. An addict needs to deal with what he is trying to escape from so they do not need to escape

Alot of people use it as a excuse oh well i cant help it its a disease, but for the most part its true and i can tell you this from living threw it. you have a good soul and are caring im glad you under stand and have empathy. I wish more in this world would relize this becuase its still so backward in this country. I mean do we send people that have a diabetic low to jail for doing something wrong.

@carlyjenna1618 We have never called alcoholism a disease because, technically speaking, it is not a disease entity. For example, there is no such thing as heart disease. Instead there are many separate heart ailment, or combinations of them. It is something like that with alcoholism. @carlyjenna1618 I just want to interject that the same people who don't agree that addiction should be qualified as a disease, also believe that it SHOULDN'T be recognized as a disease by definition. I just think it's makes the word a lot less useful. It's a broader term. Cancer patients didn't have a choice in their "disease" in most cases. I believe in PHYSICAL CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY,A PERSON creates that when starting to abuse something for mental coping reasons, not because a DISEASE compels.

@carlyjenna1618 and i'm not just saying that as someone who knows nothing about being addicted. Trust me. I don't mean to offend you. People with diseases, and chemical dependency DO need help. Medical help and treatment for the underlying mental issues that plague them. I just think they should be separated by a slight degree. The symptoms can be very similar at times. I understand. I've just always been bothered by that wording. Wishing the best!

What is problematic with Drew is he is a doctor and a lot of people think doctors know it all when it comes to medicine when no doctor knows it all and medical science is not a perfect science and never will be. Drew should use terminology such as alleged disease or suspected disease if he wants to think it is a disease. Saying addiction is a chronic disease as he does as if it is fact when there is no science to support that is misleading at the least.

@Markey0086 Actually, many PhD (doctorate) programs are more intensive and intellectually rigorous than medical school. In this US, at least, we place far too much value on the opinions of doctors and celebrities. Cigarettes and alcohol kill more people annually than ALL illicit drugs combined (check CDC for stats) but the media focuses almost exclusively on drugs like cocaine, marijuana (kill rate of 0) and heroin (most deaths are from OD, not long term use)

what?! that's bull crap, 72 hours minimum detainment for a 5150. and even so a judge has to rule whether or not that the patient actually did meet the criteria. If the judge has reason to believe that the admittance of the patient by force was necessary, and makes his judgement; he the yields the power to discharge the patient to the attending psychologist. If a 5150 is requested and issued, then the patient was unable to make rational decisions and could not take care of themselves.....

All the "Has been there since biblical times" arguments are void. Nothing is made valid by using the bible as an argument. If I said "I can drown my entire family because they did it in biblical times" I would be looked funny upon and be shunned because of that.
Drugs were used even before biblical times, but we have something that they didnt have. We have technology and knowledge, that they had, and that they never had. Drugs are an addictive substance that ruins your body and your mind.

I was turned off by Dr. Drew around 4-years ago because once a young lady called the show and was clearly depressed and thinking about throwing in the towel. Drew was cold and harsh towards her and said some crap about how she was just trying to get attention, and so he hung up on her and the show went on. After that I never much liked the guy.

Did it kill Moses? Research shows he was on drugs and is why he saw a burning tree and could see music rather than hear it. Most writers of Holy books were on drugs for religious experiences to make them closer to God.
If there is a God then we know opiates are here for us to use naturally without the Tylenol in them and so is weed and other plants. If it grows naturally then I do not see a problem with it because it was put here to be used either by evolution, God or both.

I feel that Dr. Drew is a good, kind-hearted, intelligent man who truly believes what he's doing is the right thing. However I think he's sorely mistaken about just about everything, due to the fact that he learned about addiction from a medical textbook, written by an ex-doctor who learned about addiction from an OLDER medical textbook, etc etc.
The problem is when actual addicts try to share their views on addiction/recovery, the doctors say "oh he's just a junkie he doesn't know anything"

We look at addicts as falling if they aren't motivated but we don't look at a Doctors failure if they can't cure a patient. Maybe a doctor isn't motivated to heal - have they pushed themselves past what they know to be true. I've watched this show, although good clearly the doctor can't recognize his own failures when an addict fails. When he can recognize his own failures he will have the perfect rehab clinic.

Don't be silly...Doctors do not fail so much, as the addicted i.e.who used to be thought of as hopeless.
True,40% of addicts/alcoholics who try to get well do,while 60% die. The odds aren't good.
I have to give "some" (not many,yet other doctors credit) for caring enough to try to help i.e. Dr.Drew is one of them.

Cure the causes and your cure the deasease - fail to recognize the causes and you can't be of any help. The staff on the show is without a doudt undertrained. They dont no how to interact with detoxing and mental disorders, they assume all of the patients are just arguing because there brats. The two floor tech ladies are horrible, one is a bitch to the core, it's almost like she is mad because these celebrities are taking the spotlight, the other blonde floortech is always arguing and is just as emotional as the detoxing people, that never works.

The more I learn about Dr Drew's methods, the more I become suspicious about him. I don't doubt his integrity, i just question his methods, most of which are NOT based on sound science and are definitely NOT shared by the majority of psychiatrists. Using SPECT scans to diagnose "organic brain dysfunction" is truly bizarre and his insistence on seeing EVERYTHING through the 'addiction as disease' model prevents him from even recognizing severe psychiatric cases, like Keri Ann, for example...

@ehouston Spend a few minutes watching last seasons episodes with her in it, and then this season..I have 2 years of Psch classes and I can tell you in my opinion she has some serious mental issues. Her behavior is not normal.
