  • IMO:

1990 was Eric's peak era for his technique.

1997 was Eric's peak era for his tone.

  • these tips aren't very helpful when you play so fast the camera can't even keep up with it ><

  • BEST PART, 0:49-0:54. How does he get that wonderful sound?

  • positive connection man

  • @ElusiveHermit lol i know right?!? gotta love EJ

  • This is what you will hear at the gates of heaven.

  • the way he grabs the chord is awesome

  • Comment removed

  • How does he get his solo tone?

  • @SidVicious10101 You need a Tube amp for one so you get that saturated overdriven sound, then add a tubescreamer, Delay and Reverb. Basically you should be able to achieve sound. But Eric also has his guitar wired the way he wants it to that probably helps in some way

  • @Wingguitar26 No, I'm 90% sure he uses fuzz.

  • @lms22s Lol after a few days I realized that :P

  • he looks like jay from the inbetweeners lol

  • hands are never an excuse. I have small fingered hands, but you just have to practice :)

  • does anybody know the effects he is using? i know he's using delay, but what is the other one? some kind of chorus effect?

  • I'd been using the Jazz II/III's for a couple of years before I saw this. Pretty stoked I have the same taste in picks as EJ Almighty.

  • The Mans a genius!

  • I have the ability and speed play about 90% of all guitar compositions in existence... and I rarely find a piece I can't play correctly. That being said, beggining to learn this technique was HUMBLING & HARD!! The style Eric Johnson uses to get this sound was baffeling to me at first! Though it sounds MAJOR.. it is actually WICKED fast 2 note per string simple pentatonic minors. If you are used to circular picking, learning this will make you feel like it's the first day you lifted a guitar :(

  • @DimebagDarrellGuitar Learn some buckethead hard stuff

  • Eric is good as shit, but the effects just turn me off a little. Please don't flame.

  • @GameJourney U said a lil bit, i'll let it slide lol

  • I'm pretty sure this guy is the reason I pick up my guitar everyday. I don't play as much anymore now being out of college and having a full time shift work job, Eric Johnson is the reason I try to play everyday. Not just because of Cliffs of Dover but just listen to this!! How amazing his tone and clean sound is alone does the trick. One of the most versatile guitar stylist of all time

  • The frame rate is so low I can't see shit....

  • yo agarro la pajuela como se me de la gana xDDD

  • I would rip my own hands off in order to get his

  • I HATE YOU, 240P

  • IF there is a heaven, than this is what you will hear there as you enter the Pearly Gates..........

  • Cool I have used the Jazz III pick for around 15 years now and love the sound and feel; it's unlike any other!

  • I forgot i was here for a lesson...

  • the pick is a JD Jazz pick

  • hell yeah Jazz III!

  • Greatest. Tone. Ever.

  • Wow he have a nice low action on that Fender.

  • Those 44 dislikes must be coming from some gay morons who later found out that Eric Johnson is actually straight.

  • @oldguitardude

that was the most pathetic "thumbs Up" attempt i've ever read.

  • Both Eric Johnson and Yngwie seem to use similar techniques. They use economy picking but without the sweeping appearance that most other guitarists use. At least it seems that way.

  • Jim Dunlop Jazz 3s ftw!

  • I'm surprised to see there are actually 44 morons (dislikes) that have watched this video. This guy is the MAN...

  • Praise to Eric Johnson, he does not only play well; he knows the fragrances of sound. And you can hear it in his work.

I hope you all go out and buy, some of his material; Well worth it. And form what I can see, he is a nice guy. If you learned anything from him, pay him some tribute (which ever way you want ). I have the 'Signature Lics', (Though Wolf Marshall is explaining E.J.'s playing technique(s), and I learned lots.

Practice, practice, practice. Any questions? Go Practice.

  • MULLET FTW!!!

  • God his music is beautiful even here in this mish-mash of samples intended for teaching purposes.

  • EJ definitely goes a little TOO in depth in that he over-analyzes alot of very common techniques and makes them seem unique. I struggled with this for years before realizing the multitude of players who use "the bounce" or "circle picking" or the thumb technique, piano technique, etc. Most of the stuff he talks about is done my many players.....he just does them ALL... lol.

  • @TheElectromagnet its an instructional tape man, if hes not over-analysing and going in depth, hes not giving you your moneys worth. He's explaining the mechanics of the technique and the best way to do it for maximum tone, and we know EJ's all about the tone

  • Comment removed

  • watching this video instantly makes you a guitar god... that's just how good EJ is. ahhaha

  • He always lays on the best sounding notes and chords after showing a lick

  • there should be a 24/7 radio channel of this guy noodling around all day. i would never turn it off

  • @whosaidsoup13 lol noodling around. I like that term.

  • How could anyone dislike this? It must be the haircut...

  • Lol...He uses sircle picking? Im gonna ask my guitar teacher to go fuck himself next lesson, he said it was for amatures! O.o

  • His guitar sounds like angels singing.......IMHO

  • ya know.. I really admire EJ and think he's an AMAZING player with awesome technique but for some reason I don't like his music that much. Its really weird and I can't explain it. Maybe its because most of my favorite guitarists are blue/rock oriented and EJ is more jazz influenced to me. At any rate he's one hell of a player!

  • AMAZING TONE!

  • there´s a lot of picks techniques, but i prefer jef becks technique without picks....just a coment don´t be angry with me ....

  • i'm glad he found a better hairstylist.

i would've sued the guy who did this to him.

  • I've bought the "EJ" signature jazz III and it took me about a month to eleminate the "extra undisered noises". This pick gets better a bit used but i must admit i'm not EJ for sure lol. This is a great pick for attack "up stroke and alternate stuff" but in my opinion the jazz III is not the most effective pick for jazz ^^ that's only my opinion and sorry for my english :)

  • @v3nours well the jazz III is a pick that a lot of us shreders use because is more easy to pick but is a pick that is good for everything but i mean, there is a pick for each guitar player jaja

  • @01020498 You're totally right :) Now, i'm a little bit more confident with this pick ans i've changed my mind, the jazz III is very "versatile" :) i really enjoy this pick for multiple styles and approaches. It took me much more time that i expected to apprehend the required technique for this small pick ! Less motion, the better !

  • Anybody know where to get picks like that?? It's honestly what I've been looking for for ages cuz I hate huge picks... (or normal picks, w/e :P)

  • @brossej07

Guitar Center, Musician's Friend, Sam Ash, Elderly, so many different places. They're called Dunlop Jazz III's. Eric has his own signature jazz III's, highly recommended.

  • @WoWintosh ahh yea I've used jazz 3's but his looked smaller :P

  • when he plays that small little chord at 0:52 i just melt...

  • sickk

  • genius at work

  • MULLET POWER!

  • WOW, that guy is creating a guitar tone. Definitely not from this world.

  • Whish I saw this 10 years ago...

  • this "bounce" he is describing is basically economy picking right?

  • @ElectronicStuff4Free no hes describing the motion his wrist moves in when picking, its similar to bouncing a basketball with your wrist.

  • @ElectronicStuff4Free Not sure if thats it (as lilwayneio said), but he does economy pick. From what I've seen (which may not be right), but if he's switching strings especially, he tends to pick in the direction of where the string is (down pick for ascending, up pick for descending).

  • Whoa what's that sound at 2:50?!

  • @12kirkhinrich12 selector switch I think...

  • I used to have that exact same mullet in grade 10!

  • i have a guitar like that and i play it evry day love eric jhonson very good guitarist

  • Mandolin pick.

  • Otherworldly talent. So, so ridiculously great.

  • I really love his sound. It's so refreshing and unique, something you don't see from all those shred metal guitarists.

  • Crap i want to play like him, but my fingers just won't do it !! :'(

  • That lead tone 2:05 is just too sick.....incredible tone.

  • @Duane28 get a BK butler tube drive. and an echoplex.

  • damnit, I got ripped off when god gave me these hands.

  • @Oxyster7 I'd like to point out that Angus young has PUNY hands... there's lists of guitarists that have small hands on the net.... just google it :)

  • @Oxyster7

Stop bitching, it's all in the mind. You can have the best hands in the world but they'll be useless unless you know what to do with them. Sun Yixian once said, "Knowledge is difficult. Action is easy".

  • @Oxyster7 it's not god it's about not being ignorant and applying hard work

  • @RGdood don't be stupid, I'm joking.

  • @Oxyster7 try try try everrrrry f***ing day doing this and someday you recognize you are very fast and clean with your technique.....

  • @Oxyster7 the force is actually in the mullet.

  • @Metallikakka

    can't... look... away...

  • this guy is incredible

  • There is no secret to his tone, you just have to be him, joe bonamassa plays his style really well and still can't sound like johnson. Ok you can use the same rigg as johnson in this video(if you somehow have a 54' strat) and EJ could use a 10watt squib and a copy les paul or something and he would still sound more like him than you.

  • @jembrannan Heard EJ's guitar tech play through his rig at soundcheck, sounded just like EJ. Check out EJ playing through the Fender GDEC amp. It's not his sound at all. Tone is not just in the fingers.

  • I learned a lot from ellen degeneres here...

  • he plays slow faster than i play fast

  • secret to tone: fuckload of reverb

  • @jvgiv haha there is reverb in there but thats not all.

  • nice mullet

  • very nice vid

  • That tone makes me jealous

  • Great playing, great songs, but this tutorial didnt do shit for me, unless I was already WAYYY advanced.

  • @ABrotherOfThor i dont really look at it as a tutorial, i look at it as eric johnson showing how badass he is.

    and he did exactly that

  • he is such a great player and a good guy

  • I have a thick pick :)

  • For some reason his manner reminds me of John Denver.

  • Look at that shine. He got happy with the buffer lol.

  • The FPS is too slow on this to see what the hell he is doing. After watching this dozens of times I still don't know how to practice this technique...!!!!

  • i hate EJ, because he is amazingly incredible...

  • Jay from Inbetweeners with long hair, Eric Johnson you god.

  • Doesnt he look like Dimitri Martin here lol...

  • i use that exact pick

  • @Lukeyboi14 Do you play like EJ because of it?!?

  • @shelby4555 ur a fuking physical and emotional wreck

  • @Lukeyboi14 I'm sorry man but i couldn't help but chuckle at shelby's comment.

but btw, those are his jazz nylon picks right? do they shred off a little at the edges? cuz other nylon picks i've had do that.

  • @zachoon they are called jim dunlop Jazz III. they are my favourite picks.

they dont shred off at the edges unless u do pick slides etc (but all picks do)

they have a quite sharp tip. also they are small and quite thick

  • Eric Johnson sent this video to God and Chuck Norris....they are now the 2nd and 3rd best guitar players in the universe...behind Eric Johnson

  • master mullet

  • I would be so cool to hear all this without the slabs of delay and reverb.

Playing it clean lets you hear so much more!

  • the hair

  • What Efing scales does he play when does this crap

  • @Taygoo15 Pentatonic Scale, he combines all the little boxes all over the guitar and plays in phrases of 5

  • please turn down the reverb so i can hear the notes

  • @goldensleeves thats delay

  • 38 people don't know what "I don't like this" means.

  • what song is that in 4:17

  • @ricjumba cliffs of dover

  • odd he's got those effects on this Tutorial. The echo makes it sound too layered and would confuse a young player for the most part, with the flurry multi note sections.

One of the best of these days though! thanks for posting

  • Good God This man is incredible.

  • y the fuck has this haircut?

  • EJ has only one flaw, a singular, seemingly harmless flaw that has nonetheless kept him out (wrongly) of numerous discussions on the best electric guitarist of em all...

and that's his perfectionism. it can be a blessing and a curse, and i think it came to consume some of his studio work. it took awhile to find out about him, but he's since become a high-ranked favorite of mine

  • HE LOOKS LIKE DEMETRI MARTIN LOLOL i never knew that!

  • most epic tone ever

  • He's only been voted the best player in the world by guitar magazine, and he's also One a lot of famous players favourite guitarists, so I think he should be pretty secure in his knowledge to teach, maybe.

  • "i see dead people"

  • What an epic mullet, love ya Eric

  • I have no idea of who this guy is but he sure has some style.

  • @JDX45 Seriously, look into him more. He's fucking amazing!

  • He shares A LOT of information on pick technique in this vid. He's not stingey with his knowledge like other players, which maks me respect him very much. He's not afraid to share what he knows...obviously he's very secure! And damn...he plays brilliantly.

  • probably the only guy that can get away with a mullet. Im glad he slowed it down so i could follow (eye roll) for me this video is just to appreciate eric johnsons guitar ability, i will now go to another video where i can follow the lesson.....

  • cliffs of dover is one of his songs

  • help! is the first tecnique like Frank Gambale's economy picking?? (I can't understand his english ***K!!)

  • His guitar tone must be what the voice of angels sounds like.......And I am not particularly religious. 'nuff said.

  • hands of a god

  • Wasn't expecting that voice.

  • Can somebody explain the "bounce technique" to me? he doesn't go into much detail

  • @JoeLaTurkeyIII I think that it's kind of like economy picking (alternate plus sweep), where you'll alternate pick but then keep a constant up/down stroke when you switch strings (I think that's what he means by "brushing"). But that's just my guess

  • @JoeLaTurkeyIII

It's best to tackle picking with sensations rather than look. Eric calls this the bounce technique because that's the tendency of the picking hand to experience when you play relaxed and fluid. there's this slight bouncy sensation and as for the circular motion, it comes naturally if you try to play with as little movement as possible. Don't focus too much on the look of your hand as it is different for everybody. Try focusing on what you feel. hope this helps.

  • Ha . So wierd to hear people say pick all the time. In norway it sounds exactly like pikk wich means dick xD

  • IF YOU KIDS WANT TO LEARN TO PLAY LIKE THIS FOR REAL THEN GET MY GUITAR TEACHING DVD VIDEO!!!!!YAHOO.... KEVIN HALL GUITAR...

  • dude has a great style..but if u try to use it u just ending up sounding way to much like em

  • Buried for fake. My guitar doesn't sound like that.

  • they all have fuckin long fingers.... :(((

  • Picking technique is frustrating, so many different schools of thought

  • Comment removed

  • @TheReighnart What was the episode because I don't remember?Or maybe it was in the first seasons cause I didn't used to listen to much EJ back then.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheReighnart Oh my god...didn't even recognise him.Thanks!

  • HOLY FUCKING SHITTT!!!! this is the best guiyarist on youtube so far

  • hes famous dude...

  • he is a damn good player

  • in 5:14 by pulloffs does he meen legato ?

  • @yootesa1515 Nope, those are pull offs, you don't pick while doing Legatos.

  • @SonicSpeedsMyGame ok thanks.

  • My desire in life is to play like him. His music makes such an impact on me. It's so clean and perfect.

  • @CONNOR1225 I know what your saying. But try to steal his tricks, not to emulate. Create your own style! And keep on going! xD

  • holy crap, IT'S DEMETRI MARTIN!!!

  • This is wayyyyy back in the day, like '90 maybe? Even so, it'd be damn nice to have half of his talent.

  • That sounds like the labia majora scale in C flat?

  • @evilservant lmao

  • @evilservant LOL

  • @evilservant Hahahaha wow

  • @evilservant interesting name...evils servent is an anagram for my name lol....travisnevels
