They planned to scrap all Japanese footage except the footage of the monsters and reshoot a whole new movie called the Volcano Monsters around the Monster Footage, but when that plan fell through they changed the name to Gigantis to try and trick the audience into thinking they were seeing an entierly new monster since 50s B movies didn't have sequals. On a more interesting not if you're a fan of star trek the dubbing was the first major role for George Takai aka Mr. Sulu

According to Steve Ryfle (on the English version), Paul Schreibman said it was his decision to change Godzilla's name to Gigantis, saying that they didn't want to confuse it with Godzilla. What..? He also said the Japanese version of the film was called 'Angurius'...

My dad and I call it bullshit, since the name is clearly 'Gojira no Gyakushu' (Godzilla's Counterattack). Schreibman must be smoking something at the time. And I love how Ryfle demolishes the English version it deserves

It should be noted that the original Japanese version of Godzilla Raids Again didn't have the opening with the atomic bomb. Instead it had columns of vertical Japanese text that changed extremely fast before you could finish reading, and that's a bitch with one-line American subtitles. Either way, this is a great Godzilla film and for a long time, it was the rarest to find in America because it wasn't available on VHS or DVD. Now Godzilla vs. Biollante are because they're only available on VHS.

It's a long story, orginally the American producers planned to cut all the Japanese actors, the scenes of Godzilla breathing fire, alter the special effects shots to make Godzilla dinosuar size, and reshoot the entire movie with American Actors under the name the Volcano Monsters, but the company went bankrupt so they simply re-edited the movie and since Godzilla died in the first movie they named him Gigantis to trick the audience into thinking it was a different monster

As for Godzilla having the same roar as Anguirus, I believe it was because they wanted to emphasize Godzilla's "relation" to Anguirus (as the story says) in being from the same general species of dinosaur. And that they wanted this Godzilla to be a completely different creature from King of the Monsters. (IIRC, it was even supposed to be female too x_x .)
