@MyFlame1000 Yeah it is. Sadly, it happens all the time in real life. But the book portraits it slightly differently - Denethor was jelous that Faramir appeared to admire and follow Mithrandir (Gandalf) more then him. I'm glad that at least this extended version gives as at least a hint of that unlike the cinema version, where it is as simple as "I wish you have died not Boromir". And Denethor in the book burned himself with dignity not giving in to panic. Regards
Alas for poor Denethor, II...son of Ecthelion, II!!! Great was his pride and wisdom, but in the end...his pride over ruled his wisdom, and he did what no Steward dared to do since the capture of Minas Ithil, and the palantir that was once there. He did it for the love of his country, but while Sauron could not ensnare him as he had Saurman...still he was able to weaken Denethor's heart. Denethor's is a sad tale indeed...!
well i think the movie insists more in the fact that Denethor has started to be brainwashed by the palantir, showing him the end of Gondor, that's why he looks so embittered, desperate and defeatist in the movie, the loss of the ring considered by him the only weapon which could save Gondor and the death of Boromir just gave him finishing blow and led him to madness
@ModernOblivionN00b There was nothing wrong with Boromir, either. He was doing his best and it wasn't little. He was also always taking care of Faramir, which I think is utterly sweet. He only failed in the Fellowship, because his despair to save Gondor and his practical, non-magical way of understanding things made him an easy prey for the Ring.
Denethor in the book is much more complex and positive character than in the script. So my attitude to him in the movie is ambivalent - I admire Noble and hate the scenarist. After seeing the movie with original sound I understood that the speech of Noble is closer to the original character, with his halftones and tragic element, but damn, why have they forced him to depict such an idiot. Тhe more so because the script for the other characters was written more carefully.
@podkivanok Yes. I hate what they've done to Denethor. People say Faramir was maimed by the script writers, but at least he remains a good hearted man with understandable motives. Denethor is a dick for the sake of being a dick. Not cool, PJ. We would have understood he preferred Boromir with less. The movie entirely passes over how Denethor indeed loved Faramir, but he saw his dead wife in him, and perhaps himself.
@Feanorielle PJ did it to show how some children today are like faramir and favored less than thier kin and to show how he favored one over the other kinda like Theoden does with his "Surviving male hiers" Theoden had Eomer which he regards as having no value and Denethor has Farimir which he thinks has no value watch the last 2 discs on the extended edition it explains it A LOT on y he did this and i think it comes pretty close to wat i had said
@knightace2002 Denethor already favored Boromir over Faramir in the books. But he was still a tolerable person with good personal qualities. In the movie, PJ totally overdid and turned Denethor into a heartless douchbag with no redeeming qualities. We, the audience, aren't stupid. We would have understood Faramir's pain with less. Also, it didn't come through from the movie that Denethor did indeed love Faramir too. His sorrow about Faramir's "death" was much more poignant in the book.
@Feanorielle true even tho i must debate that Denethor's madness was justly right i mean he was robbed of a son wat parent wouldn't go mad with denial and despair but agian PJ showed wat happens with despair it can take 1 of 2 forms theodens road or Denethors road Theoden used the sadness from the loss of Theodred to go into battle and live up to his forefathers in whose mighty company he shouldn't feel ashamed to be in and then denethors road complete despair and suicide
@Feanorielle Maybe somebody should do a fan edit of the Boromir as a ghost/memory behind Faramir and replace him with a fan made clip edit of someone to be Denethor's wife or something with a clip of his wife in it. That would so that Faramir remind him of his dead wife. And there are many fantasy vids of queens like camelot series or something. But I guess it would have to be a blond noble women so it would make sense.
Thanks to the palanthir in the tower of Minas Tirith Sauron manipulated Denethor for years into thinking hope was lost, and played upon his fears of being 'displaced' by the true king. He was barely clinging to sanity before this even occurred. It was a mixture of Farmir's injury which he mistook as death in his grief, his guilt of his treatment of Faramir, and the attack on the city that finally drove him completely insane.
The book shows that Denathore had a seeing stone...got it at a garage sale,1/2 off cus every person who touched it to buy it-well croaked. there are words on the stone, not just the ring-"for assholes only" so on his way to his dining ediquit class he stops, buys it,was going to have 3 holes drilled in it "tuesday is bowling night"at the citidal,But Faramire swiched it over to skeet ball minus tirith-is a giant skeet ball cage-and farimire has more points so Dad hates him. Its true a bit.
Denethor is such a loser. Why the fuck would he love Boromir instead of Faramir ? Faramir is a great son ! His father should rot in hell for all I care !
@ZzGrapezZ theories exist but no str8 answer from the book. eagles are proud and seldom get involved in the affairs of men. they are maiar and are not allowed to interfere. they ring might affect them. the eye would see them or the nazguls would attack them. or the most obvious no story if it were that easy.
He seemed to base his love for his sons on how well they suceeded in battle.Denethor favored the son, Boromir the strong, stubborn, successful warrior .but both father and son underestimated the power of the ring, Through the more popular son Boromir, Denethor looked more successful in the eyes of the people.(so he thought) though his rule was failing. Faramir had strength "of different kind" as Pippin said. He deserved better than this. Excellent acting from both.
Denethor is GAH! I hate him, don't ya'll also hate the ignorant naive characters in movies, that are so obsessed with themselves that they make so stupid decisions
Jackson did such a character assasination on Denethor overall. In the book, D didn't go insane until _after both_ (seemingly) all hope of victory was lost and Faramir was mortally wounded. To this day I wonder what PJ's motivation was.
Oh yes he is. He's a completely proud, cold, heartless man. I despise his character thoroughly. I'm mad that they made Faramir something of a pansy in the Movie. In the book he didn't really give a rats ass what his father thought.
The brothers (Boromir & Faramir) were always my favourite characters. I can't deny that there is a part of me that hates Denethor with a passion but.... I can't help but feel sad and sorry for him. The loss of Finduilas took such a toll on his mind that it cost him not only his life in the end but that of his eldest son and almost his youngest. Denethor placed too much on Boromir's shoulders and he cracked under the Ring's influence... Grief is such a powerful thing. :(
@DhampirVampire and yet can turn into several different thing Theoden who lost his only son went to batt6le and used that as his fuel while ast Denethor commited suicide the ultimate form of grief i'd rather go Theodens way than denethors that's why when i first saw3 it the charge of the 6,000 Rohirrim had me at the edge of my seat cherering and such lol it rlly inspired me
@TheMrFedoraman Given what most of the men of Numenor where like at the end of their realm there is some similarity actually ... they had been corrupted by Sauron into human sacrifice, worshipping darkness as a creator, and making war on the valar to attain godhood ... sauron didnt corrupt denethor exactly but showed him grim scenes through the palantir which combined with his sons death eventually drove him mad
@Valen123456 Ya good point. But that still doesn't change the fact that his a totally INSANE! I mean, Come on he was going to burn himself and his still living son alive!
Faramir is very loyal to his father but he also able to stand for himself, especially when he said that he didn't want to used the ring and he also asked his father to respect him, I don't understand why Denethor hates him, he should be grateful to have Faramir as a son...
Boromir was by far the greatest commander and leader of men, far superior to both Faramir and Denathor.
He could've probably held Osgiliath for longer than Faramir, but unless given reinforcements, he too would ultimately have to succumb under the sheer weight of the orcish horde as they would have buried the gondorian defenders in a pile of their own bodies.
Is it me, or is Denethor a sick cur? He inadvertedly committed infanticide because he got Boromir killed trying to get the darn Ring and he almost got Faramir killed. Why do Boromir and Faramir bend over backwards for this creep?
@alia313 dude i love all two lotr books the two towers and return of the king and i love the movies as well , but i dont think they could have fit half of the things in the books to movies
You must understand that Denethor went a lill bit crazy from watching the palantir,he had to face Sauron himself every time, and it was not an easy job,so he started loosing his mind as his will.
I don't like the way Peter Jackson villainised Denethor in the films. I kow it was for the sake of dramatic effect, but that's no excuse for totally distorting a character. Tolkien would stir in his grave.
In the books he never sent Faramir on a suicide mission, Faramir was wounded in a battle of his own choosing and when D found out, he went insane from grief.
Tolkiens spinning so fast he's reversing the rotary direction of the globe. I mean they cut Bombadil, they made Faramir almost as weak willed as Boromir, and that whole possession thing with Theoden? Really? Not to mention they turned Treebeard from a wise, venerable protector of the forest into a vegetable with as much thinking capacity as boiled broccolli, and made Aragorn a wilting flower when he confronted Sauron in the Palantir. Unfortuantely character limit keeps me from continuing...
His dad is lucky I wasn't there. If I was, his head would be rolling down the streets!!! Poor Faramir, he was always so good and obedient and yet his father treated him badly.
Great scene and like peacecanhappen27 i also think it shouldave been kept in themovie cause it shows the power of the ring and it also shows the pain in witch faramirs father is going through
hated what they did to denethor...made him a doddering clown, instead of the lordly badass he was in the book...he was driven to despair by sauron's manipulation of denethor's use of the palantir, not because he was a senile, overly emotional old fool....respect and love to noble, but the LOTR denethor was a FAIL
yeah I agree in the book denethor had a lot more dignity, he was mysterious and frightening even, but also responsible (as he saw it) trying to save the world in his own way. He just wasn't strong enough to resist Sauron's subtle manipulation of his sight through the palantir.
I would never call a man like that my father. I'd be out on the citadel viewpoint with him and be like "oops" after sticking my foot out and making him trip over the edge, heartless bastard
The hardest thing is when parents are nagging at you, and then you try to ignore them, then they trip or hurt themselves in someway, and then you hesitate whether to help them or not, and when you choose not to help, but just stay where you are, then they blame you, but who would have the nerve to help?
i love how ppl hate denethor. but actualy he is a great man in the book and if u read it ull see that he is actualy decived by sauron. that minas tirith will fall. thru the palantir that he haz.. thats why u see this denethor in the movie , its only the end of the story.
@bingowasmyname u mean David Wenham he's outstanding as an actor loved his performance in another movie called Van Helsing he rlly is an outstanding actor in these roles
@bingowasmyname this is why i love faramir, not only in this scene, but throughout the movie, despite the way his father treats him, he still continues in his life, perhaps in sadness and pain, but nonetheless he continues - so it is also with all true believers in Jesus, and to everyone out there, God the Father is your real father, spiritual, you can know him by being born again in Jesus, and have a real relationship with him, he loves us, it's why he sent Jesus for us, to be with us forever.
@zcxvcbcz I will talk about Jesus anytime anywhere anyplace to anyone and there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it, so you keep your evil to yourself, my God is Jesus, ruler of all, there's nothing you can do about it,
@zcxvcbcz lol ignorant moron. Jesus, God & Holy Spirit are all elements of Trinitarianism and thus one entity in Christian theology. That's the most basic element of their beliefs. I'm not Christian and I know that! Internet loudmouths who slam Christianity are all the same uneducated, ignorant rabble. Christianity isn't just fairytales, they're the repository of 2000 years of philosophy and ethics of the Western World. Educate yourself w/o bigotry or bias. Most religions can teach you something
go to hell denethor u dont appreciate your son so fuk off faramir and boromir should hav been with da felloship together and in da third movie u care for faramir and cry dat he got shot fuk u u a hippocritt gay fag
I hate that Denethor is pictured as a weakling in the movies, he should have the same aura as boromir has got. He is also considered a very skilled fighter and mortal as hell. Though Boromirs death made him a bastard.
faramir is a better archer than baramir, baramir is a better swordsman, and they are both somewhat princes of gondor. i dont see why denethor couldnt love both of them. they are both as strong as each other. denethor is a jackass!
i agree with denethor, it was quite stupid to allow a halfling to walk into mordor with the ring of power when Bormier had been sent to get it and died, and when it reaches gondor it is allowed to pass through. now i understand why denethor could be pissed off
Keep the ring and it would make denethor or anyone else into an exact reflection of Sauron or just betray the person to Sauron. Frodo was trying to throw the ring into Mt. Doom and that's why Faramir let him go whether allow the temptation to destroy Gondor
ooh.. I do feel bad for Denethor he did go through alot of tragic..but why take it all on Faramir..mtt. poor Farmir. I resent Denethor for that reason. Jerk!
But Faramir will alway's be loved by me.. LOVE YOU FARAMIR!
I agree. Denethor is great character. He played his part well. Denethor is probably 1 of the best charcter they portrayed well in the movie. Such a memorible character.
For years I have observed people in my family treat one sibling better than others. To the tune of losing everything: home, cars, money, jobs, kids going to jail. You name it.
I can only explain it this way, as Tolkien did in the book: Denethor lost his wife early on, & Faramir reminds Denethor of himself, and Denethor does like like himself.
Denethor is bookish, and semi-reserved.
Boromir is everything Denethor feels he cannot be. Strong, valiant, "a man's man".
even if Denetor got the ring i doubt he can use it tho. Smeago got it for 500 years but all it did is prolonged his life and turn him into a monster....
if galadriel or gandalf got the ring then that might be another story.....

Faramir is very loyal to his father but he also able to stand for himself, especially when he said that he didn't want to used the ring and he also asked his father to respect him, I don't understand why Denethor hates him, he should be grateful to have Faramir as a son...

This was a pretty sick scene. .__. Poor Farry. <3
BragneaxStarlight 1 year ago 2
Boromir was by far the greatest commander and leader of men, far superior to both Faramir and Denathor.
He could've probably held Osgiliath for longer than Faramir, but unless given reinforcements, he too would ultimately have to succumb under the sheer weight of the orcish horde as they would have buried the gondorian defenders in a pile of their own bodies.
SinerAthin 1 year ago
Is it me, or is Denethor a sick cur? He inadvertedly committed infanticide because he got Boromir killed trying to get the darn Ring and he almost got Faramir killed. Why do Boromir and Faramir bend over backwards for this creep?

I haven't read the books yet but heavily considering it. May I ask is it much different from the movies?
Psycho3418 1 year ago
@Psycho3418 yeah the books are really different, but they are well worth reading!

@Psycho3418
Read the books.
The movies are an admirable tribute, but really it's tough for a movie to do any more than lip service to the books.
In the books you get treated to elegant writing in novel language.
JacktheDaniels 1 year ago 2
@Psycho3418 it's difficult to read at some points. If you like the film, you will love the books (eventually) x.

In the books he never sent Faramir on a suicide mission, Faramir was wounded in a battle of his own choosing and when D found out, he went insane from grief.
thegreatchimp 2 years ago 7
@thegreatchimp
I don't know...I kind of liked it.
I realize it wasn't true to the book, but it really made you care about Faramir alot more.
Cocarat206 1 year ago
Tolkiens spinning so fast he's reversing the rotary direction of the globe. I mean they cut Bombadil, they made Faramir almost as weak willed as Boromir, and that whole possession thing with Theoden? Really? Not to mention they turned Treebeard from a wise, venerable protector of the forest into a vegetable with as much thinking capacity as boiled broccolli, and made Aragorn a wilting flower when he confronted Sauron in the Palantir. Unfortuantely character limit keeps me from continuing...

Great scene and like peacecanhappen27 i also think it shouldave been kept in themovie cause it shows the power of the ring and it also shows the pain in witch faramirs father is going through
coconopalito 2 years ago
hated what they did to denethor...made him a doddering clown, instead of the lordly badass he was in the book...he was driven to despair by sauron's manipulation of denethor's use of the palantir, not because he was a senile, overly emotional old fool....respect and love to noble, but the LOTR denethor was a FAIL
jcfbell3001 2 years ago 7
yeah I agree in the book denethor had a lot more dignity, he was mysterious and frightening even, but also responsible (as he saw it) trying to save the world in his own way. He just wasn't strong enough to resist Sauron's subtle manipulation of his sight through the palantir.
mawhar 2 years ago 4
that was really well worded....i wish more people who only saw the movie knew that...

beautiful! the quality is awesome! and this scene is so intense! definitely should have kept this scene in. It really illustrates the power of Ring.

thenoobfactor 2 years ago
The hardest thing is when parents are nagging at you, and then you try to ignore them, then they trip or hurt themselves in someway, and then you hesitate whether to help them or not, and when you choose not to help, but just stay where you are, then they blame you, but who would have the nerve to help?
anythingnew 2 years ago 7
That would suck to lose a kid, though. True, Denethor should NOT have shown/had favoritism, but that happens to parents even in the 21st century.

Faramir is an amazing actor- he portrays the emotion of heartbreak and wanting to be loved and an empty feeling so well.
This scene is so sad.

@bingowasmyname u mean David Wenham he's outstanding as an actor loved his performance in another movie called Van Helsing he rlly is an outstanding actor in these roles
knightace2002 1 year ago
@bingowasmyname this is why i love faramir, not only in this scene, but throughout the movie, despite the way his father treats him, he still continues in his life, perhaps in sadness and pain, but nonetheless he continues - so it is also with all true believers in Jesus, and to everyone out there, God the Father is your real father, spiritual, you can know him by being born again in Jesus, and have a real relationship with him, he loves us, it's why he sent Jesus for us, to be with us forever.

I hate that Denethor is pictured as a weakling in the movies, he should have the same aura as boromir has got. He is also considered a very skilled fighter and mortal as hell. Though Boromirs death made him a bastard.

he became a fatalist when he saw the armies of Mordor through the Pallantir, thought there was no salvation possible

Still.. He is too weak for his character. That he had lost hope, doesn't mean that he became weak and that foolish.

i agree with denethor, it was quite stupid to allow a halfling to walk into mordor with the ring of power when Bormier had been sent to get it and died, and when it reaches gondor it is allowed to pass through. now i understand why denethor could be pissed off
watwur 2 years ago
Keep the ring and it would make denethor or anyone else into an exact reflection of Sauron or just betray the person to Sauron. Frodo was trying to throw the ring into Mt. Doom and that's why Faramir let him go whether allow the temptation to destroy Gondor

Strong, valiant, "a man's man".

if galadriel or gandalf got the ring then that might be another story.....
