If even one little girl has to undergo this atrocity in even a 'minor' way (talk of 'exaggerations' is mute and meaningless), it is cruel torture in the extreme. These victims are little girls as young as 2 or 3 years. The true innocent's of this world. You Tube has films of this gut-wrenching procedure actually being performed. Watch them, if you can stomach it, and then see if you can call any of it 'exaggeration'.
Education, education, education will stop it. Knowledge is power, spread it
i wonder whats the reason for the FGC. Besides all of the reasons that were given. i heard that streaching the vulva + is precticed in war conflicted zones. bc in cases of attack and rape of women they may become pregnant and expelled from village. dont know if its true but it maybe. this story was told by one woman from Africa ( i dont know exactly where she was from)
With all respect, wouldn't it be difficult for you to know if she's exaggerating her story if your someone from the city and not from the same nomadic people as herself? She's an incredible woman, God truly is using her pain to help other people and she will be blessed. God Bless the people of Somalia and Africa, may Peace rule there. Amen.
amonge kids from egypt and somalia when spring beak comes around they pack up and take the kids to get mutilated or bring in one of these mosters to do it in the country that they live in. I wish the law allowed the govenment to check girls that seemed to be in any discomfort after comming from there to be examined for this abuse.
@cbluver22 I can not post websites on YT, but google these head lines,"UK fails to halt female genital mutilation" And this one contains very disturbing video on the site,(not for the faint of heart) "British girls undergo horror of genital mutilation despite tough laws". Once you find these sites you will be able to find others. If you still have trouble finding it let me know and I will PM you and see if YT will let me send a web address that way.
I am not denying that it does happen, but stories like this tend to generalize and over exaggerate. FGM, happens among girls who lived in the desert. These girls make up a small % of the Somali population. I never heard of GM, until I read the book "Desert Flower" and I am Somali. This movie shows the worst kind of example of fgm in practice, but in reality, this form rarely happens. I agree that these practices need to stop at some extent, but not all girls suffered like this.
@cbluver22 You are talking about the degree of the circumcision 1-4? And yes, we do this in western culture to men in the form of circumcised. The thing is that when a woman is cut down there to any degree, especially in non sterile conditions it is not ok. This appeared to have been a type 1 or 2 procedure, she had, but it still can have serious complications to child birth. Also, until the 1950's female circumcision was done for the sole purpose of decreasing a woman's sex drive in the U.S.
@cbluver22 I understand your defense of the practice as you know it. It is like telling Jewish people to stop circumcising their boys. It is tradition that is hard to change. But for a woman, it can cause complications of birth, incontinence of urine and feces. The very tool that was supposed to make a girl more desirable can make her an outcast with these complications which is not unheard of. This is true even in the mildest of the procedures. As a medical person I have a lot of passion on this.
I don't think you know that much about the real process of FGM. When major parts such as the clitoris is removed it is barbaric and unjust, but not all woman who went through FGM had their clitoris cut of. I know many woman who went through this but did not have complication of birth or trouble with urinating. It's how the practice is done that's dangerous. This move over exaggerates a bit about FGM in Somalia. That was the point I was trying to make.
how could you say, "These girls make up a small % of the Somali population"?
you claim, "I'm Somali and I never seen or heard about that", but 2010 estimate of Somalia population = 9,359,000; 5% = 467,950 people and 1% = 93,590.
by your estimate of a 'small %' you would not care that almost ten thousand of your people were forced to have this done?
As long as that 'small %' does not include you?
Think about what you say before you say it, please.
Oh please, Somalia has no working government how in the world could they come up wit a statistic like that?? And when did I say that I don't care about it? Your getting to emotional. The problem with movies like this is that they over-exaggerate what really happens. Being a Somali living among Somalis and my country for a while I think I know better.
What you say about how the majority of women not having their clitoris removed shows that you admit it does happen. The fact is that few places that have the ability to do this procedure with proper sanitation. Your government is not the only group who worries about the number of women this occurs to, since organizations like WHO (World Health Organization) take statistics, and one I researched found the population of Somalian women to have a 95 % prevalence of Type I and III FGM.
" What you say about how the majority of women not having their clitoris removed shows that you admit it does happen.
When did I say it does not happen? And no, there is no way that WHO could come up with a number like that. Somalia is a freakin warzone. It's considered the most dangerous country right now. The U.N can't even deliver FOOD and AID, how the hell can the WHO come up with statistics?!!?
@curiousxmirror True. I'm also a Somali woman. And many women in my family and I have not been circumsized (as is with many city people). It is true that the nomads have it the worst( not bashing), as they have the most unsanitary conditions and adhere to strict tradition not to mention the lower education levels vs. the city people in Somalia. This is an issue we need to deal with, and Im against it, but this movie, without a shadow of a doubt, exaggerates beyond belief. Well, it is a movie...
The reason it ending is like this, is that we all need to work together, raise awareness, support those who are fighting to end this FGM, so that all women can be healthy, strong, and whole. Only then will Waris' job be done.
omg this is sooooooooooooooooo sad. i can't believe somalian did that now east african take the circumcision thing way too far, my best friend is from sudan, she said for her they cut off the clitoris, and then sew the vagina and leave a little opening. now that is messed up now why would you sew up a virgins vigina it is already soo tight in there, and why would they cut off everything from wiris and then sew her up, and her hubby has to tear it up and force himself on her, how messed up is tha
@0Malaya0 "on the whole world 130 millions girls and women suffer from the outcome of the circumcision.
Also in europe and the usa immigrants continue this cruel tradition. Waris Dirie was the first woman, who advise the public of circumcision. (I´m sorry for my very bad english)
that film is such great and beautiful. it's so worth seeing :) i was lookin' for it on another pages but here on YT I found the best version :) i watched it fast in very good quality! ;) thank You eHistory101 !!! :)
