Basically what he is saying is, if the picture that you're trying to create a transparent backround for doesn't already have a solid 1-color backround that you'll have to zoom in (like on MS paint) and manually draw/erase an outline around the object that you want to have standing alone within the transparent backround. If not, the magic wand wont know what to highlight. It might also be necessary to fill in the backround all one solid color, or erase it if you choose.

once you make the selection, before hitting delete you can increase the selection by going to Select > grow or select> feather or select> border (my favorite one) and then hit delete, this will cut a bit closer to the edges of the image. instead of manually going around the obvious image borders, and then you can fine comb it with an eraser

Your video is excellent! I find it puzzling that GIMP's creators have not realized they need to make this very common task far easier to do than it currently is. Henco is quite savvy with his gimp so he was able to figure this out and explain it to us newbies. GIMP is free but far from easy to learn and use. I wonder if the two things are related ;-)
