I feel that unless there are children involved, in the event of a dissolution of a childless marriage, the partners should only leave the marriage with what they came in with, gifts given during the marriage or property acquired together if that property is acquired with a common goal..ie. buying and improving a house.

The fact of the matter is over 50% of marriages end in divorce. The vast majority of those people did not enter those marriages planning on splitting up. Getting a divorce doesn't always mean one or both partners did something wrong or were bad partners. I'm almost 25, and I never grew up being taught that it was a religious custom. With respect to the fact that it may very well be a religious custom since its inception, it's become a lot more than that. Prenups are a part of why. Another thing you should consider is that if there are people like me who grew up never being religious to begin with, they'd probably get married as a symbol of their affection for the other person.
