It is better to ask for the remnant foods. Sometimes there are dangerous chemicals and acids and mercury in dumpsters. It is better to promote a tax credit for companies who donate food. I think about the people near the dump, the orphans who live off the dump. If we could save to help them have safe places to live, fresh water, parents and warm beds to sleep in. I can't help but wonder if some of our actions of food conserving come from their cries that are heard in spirit.

is the recession REALLY that bad? dumpster diving? do you know what people throw out on the same food you're eating? EW. my mouth would not go near a dumpster..
@baire702 Yea, some eployee busted me and my friend in dumpster diving. He was all like "Get outta my dumpster you punks!" So anyway, its good to be as reasonable as possible. We went home and tried again the next day.
Even if the fruits and veggies get bruised from dropping them, they're using the food right after, instead of storing it for another day, so they don't have to worry about the food not lasting as long.
I agree, but still I think it's best to be gentle with food... you never know what you might end up storing for later use (having more than you thought you were going to use, etc..)
I have never done it, though. I have only just recently heard of this practice.
Americans are so stigmatized. We're all so conditioned and controlled. So many people I know would be like, "OMG, LIKE, OMG, THAT IS SOOOOO GROSS!!!1 LIKE, AND UNHYGEINICCC, I SHOWER LIKE TEN TIMES PER DAY AND WASH CLOTHES TWICE PER DAY!!!11 I PAY 5 DOLLARS AT STARBUCKS FOR A COFFEE AND I AM TRENDY AND A CONSUMER WHORE!"
Wouldn't it be better to get the food from bakers & supermarkets at the very end of the night - before it hits the bins. The amount of germs that would be surrounding the food, even if it was unspoilt itself, would surely contaminate it. I freecycle, use public transport & walk, compost & recycle, charity shop & all the rest, but dumpster diving for food...i don't know, it sounds like a bums diner to me. Using artichokes to aid memory, i might start eating them. Thanks.
usualy many restaurants know of Freegans & they Leave food that is good to eat placed nicely in bags next to the trash cans ready for them to pick up.
does anybody know what dumpster diving is like in other countries. I've done plenty in the USA, and it's easy here, I hear that UK is also good, but has anybody dived in other major cities, like tokyo or dehli, etc?
Well my friend, i'm from Brazil and I can tell you for sure that dumpster diving is made by tradicional bums and very poor people here.
I think that a group of freeegans in Brazil would have a hard time to find dumpsters without getting trouble with them.
Anyway, this is a very interesting way of life. I've heard that freegans also don't pay rent: they life for free in abandoned places taht they're going to take care of (a bit like in Fight Club movie).
I tried the spaghetti squash salad (using normal onions and lemon instead of sweet and lime) and I loved it. You guys rock! Any chance you'll make another episode some day?
Oh, and it's amazing what stores throw out. For those of you who think rooting around in a dumpster is gross, Safeway leaves expired food (which they legally have to expire long before it goes bad, so it's still good) in crates behind the store, and it's very sanitary.
i can't believe people throw away unopened food stuff like that. in anycase, did the freegans find all their kitchen utensils, paper towel, etc through dumpster diving?
In 1876, a young girl named Jenn was walking down a river, an insane man killed her by stabbing her in the back, raping her, and then hanging her in his closet. Now that you have read this message, she will haunt your house for 5 years. Every night when you go to sleep she will appear in your closet, hanging their with her glowing red eyes.
To each his own I guess...

doesn't throwing the fruits and veggies into the box roughly like that cause bruising (which would make them not last as long)?
