My dad has always loved Strawbs, and I always knew it. But it wasn't until now I decided to check them out. I completely get why he loves them so much. Strawbs just gained a new fan. I'm so going to ask him to take me to their concert this year.
unions are a good thing for the normal working man and woman, thats why the press and the torys hate them so much.the public are so thick to believe the press and tory lies. if you want a desent living wage and fair hours ,you join a union.whats wronge with that FOR FUCKS SAKE WAKE UP OR YOU WILL HAVE NO JOB OR SECURITY.TORYS ARE OUIT TO FLEECE EVERY WORKING MAN AND WOMAN..
Out of curiosity I checked up the song on another well- known part of the Internet. For what it's worth the group say the song wasn't meant to be a satire.
@Taiwanlight After reading your comment, I went on Wikipedia, but there's no link for the reference. Everything that I had heard/read about the song previously was that it was intended to be satirical, and that the band had a negative view of the British trade unions because of their confrontational policies, and regular strikes.
@SultanChase Well, I'm looking at the wikipage right now 'Part of the Union" and it says 'The song was unofficially adopted by the trade union movement, and it is widely considered to be a proud folk anthem for the working man. Although the lyrics may be read as somewhat sarcastically anti-trade union, the members of the band have stated many times that it wasn't meant to be sarcastic or parodic'.
Mind you, Wiki does say it needs a citation for this which is why I said 'for what it's worth'.
@Taiwanlight Yeah, I saw that. However, last year the Wiki page said the opposite, so it's hard to determine which account is reliable. Also, as I said in my earlier comment, whenever I have heard/read any commentary on the song, a strong point has been made of the supposed satirical, anti-union sentiment.
I'm really pleased I found this. I thought this song was written exclusively for the Norwich Union Healthcare adverts. Had no idea there was a full length versionof it
This was written with a high degree of cynicism originally. However. I think that Cousins himself has come around to recognize that unions he was gently mocking with this song are really one of the few fighting against new age fascists that seek to suppress all our rights.
Samcubegamer; signing a form removing the right to a union rep. at a disciplinary hearing has no validity in law. This is because this right is granted by statute (S10 Employment Relations Act 1999), so cannot be over-ridden by any contractual provision. Those who have signed still have the legal right to a union rep., even if the employer doesn't like it. I am an employment lawyer, by the way.
The problem with Unions these days is that Union reps are every bit as capitalist as the companies that they claim to despise. The lure or high salary, company cars, good holiday leave is more attractive than the drive to obtain adequate working conditions that their members pay for. In the words of this song "the sight of the Union card, makes me some kind of superman" is extremely outdated. "out brothers out" only counts for the deluded.
To be honest: most of the Unions today only exist in the public sector. And I know that in that sector most people only join a Union when they are faced with redundancy, It fails because ' The union' is not part of their life. Unions are now outmoded and Thatcher, Blair et al did nothing to kill them off. The average 'working man' did it himself. Sorry.
@davidpatterson92 of course you do, your 18. Anyone who isn't a left liberal by 18 doesn't have a heart, and anyone who isn't a conservitive by 40 doesn't have a brain. (fairly common saying). Unions give you great wages for putting in TIME, but not SKILL. Guilds (like the actors guild), pay on skill. The better you are, they regulate the wages to pay you more. You don't get more just because you have been an actor for 10 years.
@TheMcGintus I'm afraid if you look into what this song is about you will find out it is meant to be taking the mickey out of all the strikes during the seventies,i myself thought it was a pro union song untill i found out the truth
takes me back to the great days of the 1970's. The crap that poeple put up with today from the MP's and bankers just would not have happened then. We moaned about our student grants not being high enough and about British Rail. When you phoned someone you actually spoke to a person not a machine or a pre programmed twit at some call centre. Can you beleive it!!!!
@ukcelticpride and the sad thing is, Mrs Thatcher will never realise, even on her deathbead, that IF she had been reasonable (and the timetable) about the changes she and her rich mates wanted, then a whole lot less people would have been hurt, and England would STILL be a great nation.
Most of the basic rights British workers enjoy are because of the Unions. Thatcher rolled back the Unions but they still exist and in certain sectors of the economy are still strong. People were killed and sent to jail for the basic rights we enjoy today, which include being members of a Union. Remember Peterloo and Tolpuddle, the Tories won't give you anything for free!
@densaner77 lets remember that!!! Unions forever! if it had not been for the Unions we as British working class would still be slaves oooops! sorry work in the mills for a pittance!
I have no answers , i know little about economics but where i work unions are obsolete noone is in one they're not allowed in the front gate and workers are treated exactly how they are_powerless_ bloody minded unionism is not the answer, but neither is corporate greed. imported goods made for nothing by slaves so rich rsoles can get richer is deplorable.
if we go liberal and have no unions with wage freezes then that should mean the cost of living should go down. yet here when the union movement was squashed no such thing happend just the bottom line got bigger. here the cost of living has soared e;g grocery prices are sky rocketing. minimum wages are stagnate and the gap between the have's and have nots is HUGE.
.""""" but once they become involved in pay bargaining, they only create an unsustainably high wage level which sends jobs overseas""""" greed is sending jobs overseas now anyway -- whether unions have huge power or not..
It was the way of life in England from the 50's until the late 80's. Unions had a stranglehold on the labour force and productivity, and management lined their own pockets by bleeding the balancesheet dry.
This song is very, very accurate of the time when it was written.
It is much better now that the unions have grown up and lost most of the commie agitators in their ranks, and businesses have become more socially responsible.
Not perfect, many CEOs are still lying crooks, but better.
Thatcher created some problems. I don't dispute that, but she created a load more. One could argue had the Trade Unions had too much power in 1979, but it has become almost a criminal offence to strike, and it is employers who have too much power. Nowadays, our working conditions are amongst the worst in the EU. There needs to be a balance.
What good has the unions done for lorry drivers in the uk? Nothing! We pay our subs to subsidise someones speeding fines. Sorry but if you`re a "proffesional driver" then you should know the speed limits. That`s why i won`t ever join up. That money is better going to my family.
The only ones that can do anything is the drivers themselves and there isn`t any sticking together. Where have the unions been on any of the last two strikes ie shell and tesco`s in livingstone? Hiding up still in work and making no comment!
It's amazing how astonishingly ignorant most people are about economics.
Trade unions are excellent for protecting workers from abuse, sexual harrasment, lawsuits (e.g. teacher's unions), etc., but once they become involved in pay bargaining, they only create an unsustainably high wage level which sends jobs overseas. Worse still, they only create beneficial arrangements for "insiders" - members - and lock out those who aren't fortunate enough to have union membership, who they call "scabs".
Don't knock unions - in Sweden EVERYONE including evenmanagement is unionized (Seriously) - and Union reps by law must sit on the company board. It's all non-confrontational, agreed, and protectionist. And no they don't pay super high taxes anymore... Poor Britain and the US, does anyone actually feel like they have job security anymore? A union is NOT a dirty word... get organized....
@TheGrumpytroll It's not just Britain and the US, Australia needs to get organised also. Our I.R Laws fails basic Labor & Human Rights set down by the I.L.O. for which Australia is signatory to.
@TheGrumpytroll So agree with you here my friend, what l would give to have union reps sitting on company boards here. In Australia Unions are a dying breed and workers have themselves to blame. I for one always have been and always will be a member of a UNION.
@TheGrumpytroll It's a sad state we in here in Britian. Not to mention that David Cameron is trying to take away more of the Unions power. Were I work they're trying to get people to sign a form saying we're not allowed a Union Rep with us in a disciplinary meeting until it's at a stage were it's almost too late for them to help us. Sad thing is, some people have signed and agreed to this
maybe Arthur Scargill and Derek Robinson were not ideal, classic cases of the tail wagging the dog......but better those men with a mission than new labours puppets Unite
everyone in england and ireland should listen to the german comedian henning wehn. he is spot on about our work ethic. germany has unions, BUT, they have a work ethic, and dont have unrealistic expectations.
My step-uncle was a trades union representative. Friends and family used to sing this song to him. After he died it was one of the songs we played at his funeral.
Yes, that's right. The problems are all to do with the Labour Party and the Unions, and nothing at all to do with greedy unaccountable corporations chasing a quick buck.
Thatcher was great, 5 million on the dole, all our assets sold off and "no such thing as society" (her words). Rampant crime and the breakdown of community nothing to do with that then!
Thanks for sharing your wise insights with us - I can't wait for the new Thatcherite dawn!
yeah, 5 mill on the dole.. all thatchers fault... nothing to do with the advent of new technologies replacing men.. nothing to do with work being shifted abroad due to lazy strikers closing companies... nice to see the election results yesterday.. people all over the country are waking to a happy new tory life...
And the tories sat there and let it all happen. Other countries did their best to save their industries, (and some succeeded), whilst the tories threw ours to the wolves.
Your profile says you are 33. You were alive when Thatcher came to power but you can have no idea what it was like to see the country change the way it did. The damage was done before you had pubic hair, and this land had a new greedy, uncaring way about it. Unemployment kept high so people would work
for less. Never again! thats right, they don't work ata ll now. I see labour did a great job of getting the country back its feet. all todays generation have to look forward to is reposesion and poverty. All thanks to your generation. Still, you will be dead soon and we have to put up with the legacy you have left us.
from all the people under 35 in Britain to the people that went on stike to drive work abroad... thanks.
You don't get it do you? I said nothing about living for free.
I don't think its asking much, (in the 5th biggest economy in the world), to have somewhere dry and warm to live at an affordable cost. That very basic of a civilised country has been turned into a premium priced commodity by the insane housing policies of the tories.
And if EVERYONE gets that education you speak of, does that mean we'll all have well paid comfy jobs?
Yes,give a home but make people aware of the value of the £ they spend.
You can't move on the council estates near me for 08 reg cars and a wide screen telly can be seen in every house as you look through their windows, and these are unemployed people.
House prices under the tories? they were a lot cheaper than today.
And would we all be well paid if educated? no but at least they will have tried.
I can't argue anymore, i have a lodge meeting to go to.
Make people aware of the value of the pound? So patronising!
You surely can't be that stupid and ignorant to think everyone on council estates are unemployed have 08 cars and widescreen TVs. You're just spouting the mantra of the tory right. One day you may emerge from behind the carapace of your jargon and see things in the real world.
Pull your head out from up Thatcher's arse and blink.
You can't argue anymore because you have nothing credible to say.
My comment was made in the context of the time in which this song was set when, no there was no alternative. Today there is, sadly, no Tory party; they're just another crowd of centrists. The alternatives today? The Nazis of the BNP or the Euro-Quislings of Labour or, in some quarters, Al Qaida.
i agree with you where i am its like dole city. its mental and i work six days a week and they still seem to do better. new cars every year and a house like a palace. what a world
He's the same age as me, he must have had a lovely sheltered life. He may not remember what it was like to live under Thatcher, unfortunately I do.
Some people prospered under her, so opinion will always be divided; I'm just amazed that this chap thinks unions have had that much influence in the last 25 years - clearly they haven't.
I wouldn't worry too much about him though; his spelling and syntax are so bad he's clearly an imbecile. His teachers were obviously on strike!

Repossession? See the early 90s.
You're very up-yourself to make yourself spokesperson for all under 35s!
Legacy? Well as I'm not dead yet I can't have finished making it. Doh!
Tory legacy = You what? You want to LIVE somewhere? You'll have to bloody pay!
You want a job to look after your family? Go to McDonalds. Minimum wage.
rhysdylanhughes is right. Perhaps your teachers were on strike. (That's if the tories didn't close the school).

of course you do, why should you live for free??
You want a job to look after your family? Go to McDonalds. Minimum wage.
then get an education.
i have no sympathy thats the will nots.

Such naivete.
Of course you have no sympathy. You're a tory!

Should everyone have a dry warm place?
Yes,give a home but make people aware of the value of the £ they spend.
You can't move on the council estates near me for 08 reg cars and a wide screen telly can be seen in every house as you look through their windows, and these are unemployed people.
House prices under the tories? they were a lot cheaper than today.
And would we all be well paid if educated? no but at least they will have tried.
I can't argue anymore, i have a lodge meeting to go to.
RobbieTyler1 3 years ago
You really have no idea, do you?
Make people aware of the value of the pound? So patronising!
You surely can't be that stupid and ignorant to think everyone on council estates are unemployed have 08 cars and widescreen TVs. You're just spouting the mantra of the tory right. One day you may emerge from behind the carapace of your jargon and see things in the real world.
Pull your head out from up Thatcher's arse and blink.
You can't argue anymore because you have nothing credible to say.
050261mellost 3 years ago
Hmmm... okay, have it your way, i don't need to argue with you as I know i'm right.
The daily mail tells me so evry day.
RobbieTyler1 3 years ago
The Daily Mail? That paragon of virtue?
Now I know you're winding me up!
No hard feelings and best wishes to you.
Politicians aren't worth arguing about anyway.

Better to spout the jargon of the Tory right than that of the KGB --- Scargill? Red Robbo?
kirstenthegoth 3 years ago
So, kirstenthegoth.
Glad you agree that the tory right spout jargon.
But also, are you suggesting that the only alternatives to the tory right are 'the KGB, Scargill and Red Robbo'?
050261mellost 3 years ago
My comment was made in the context of the time in which this song was set when, no there was no alternative. Today there is, sadly, no Tory party; they're just another crowd of centrists. The alternatives today? The Nazis of the BNP or the Euro-Quislings of Labour or, in some quarters, Al Qaida.
kirstenthegoth 3 years ago
Still very narrow minded of you to think these were the only alternatives at a time before you were born.
I don't remember it like that.

i agree with you where i am its like dole city. its mental and i work six days a week and they still seem to do better. new cars every year and a house like a palace. what a world
