this is my absolute favorite song. we played this in my high school jazz band and had a blast with it. i feel like this band lost some of the melody in it though and buble could have done a better job with it. he's just not feeling it in this performance and no one can live up to van morrison.

Yeah a quality voice for shure but listen to the end of his phrasing. staccato at the end of of each line. A sign of youth it's not bad, but simply an observation. This could be, even by his standards drastically improved or may be not.

It depends on the persom the life they have had etc.

Sometimes some folk just ain't hip. The band behind him swing well, he should use that to his advantage which he clearly isn't here. Rank and file have no comparison.

The backing band's part is so good, minus that sax solo, not quite sure what the player was listening to, that the lyrics don't matter quite as much. Plus, the lyrics, while below average compared to what I usually listen to, don't really suck. Also, you group lyrics together quite unlike Van did. That second is from two different "stanzas". Two hits, don't forget Brown Eyed Girl.

@kjjmac, michael DOES write his own material, he also does covers from time to time and his vocal style is far more pleasing to me that "Vans". I don't understand why people argue on YouTube comments, music and art in general can never please everyone at once, because it's subjective. So to say that one is better than the other is just stating opinion, not fact. Personally I love this version and I think michael's voice fit the piece so well!

What a cheesy lounge act. Yes, he has a good voice, but millions of people have good voices. This guy has no spark, no spontaneity, no originality. Anyone with a voice can sing someone else's song. It's called karaoke. It's an entirely different thing to write one's own material and perform it. That's why Van is the best. One of a kind. His voice is good - control and range - and he plays with note and phrasing in an intelligent way. His show is retro, but so is jazz (also free jazz, right?). I don't think you are going to get much closer nowadays. He is no Elling, but Sinatra wasn't Mel Torme, either.
