This song is a perfect example of how I wish the world would live and it helps me find the good out of everyone and to always love your "enemies" (I don't consider anyone to be an enemy) as well as your friends
great song, had this song stuck in my heard earlier today but couldn't remember the artist, so happy to have found this song, wish this song would be a staple on the oldies stations
NICE. i cant describe it with any other word than groovy. it just oozes 60's. its at this point that i say that im a millenial who thinks music today is canned crap. how could anybody hate the boomer generation?

@EdMoranRivera Did you read the description for this video? This is one of those records where the official title is not the same as what is sung. Ever heard of "Gimme Little Sign?" Etc.
i love this song its def one of my favorites i like to sing this one with my mom lol. im 18 and would like to form a super band of kids like myself to bring back the 60s sound back dang it!
Funny how the eyes play tricks. I never noticed "of" instead of "in" in the title until other posters pointed it out. What the subconscious does is it corrects things, without making a big announcement of it.
this was one of those songs you heard a few times when it first came out like maybe on Ed sullivan or something, then you don't hear it again for like forty years and then hear it again and you go "wow, I haven't heard that for forty years; I love that song!" Far Out Man, Groooovy
I heard once that one of the singers was actually singing "Freak" out in the darkness as sort of a commentary on hate and ignornace. It seems as one of them is saying "freak" instead of "reach."
@gdub999tube I misheard a lot of lyrics when I listened to a transistor radio (yes, I am that old). When I bought CDs I heard a whole new version of some songs :)
@sirius212ify When this first came out I thought they were saying "freak out" too. But then, Frank Zappa and the Mothers were the true purveyors of Freak Out!
The first time I hear this song was the Saturday in June, 1968 when they buried Robert F. Kennedy--I thought this song kind of summed up how things should have been but turned out not to be. Rot in hell Sirhan Sirhan--you will die in prison where you belong!!!
Every time I hear this song, I always see my self on stage dressed like a hippie for the 2nd grade talent show. I know I've said this before, but that's what I always remember about this song. I was only 8 years old, and now I'm 20. Time really does fly by!
Wow, this REALLY takes me back. I had completely forgotten this song. I remember that I loved the whole idea of the song - to reach out to others and to find some commonality in our humanity. Reach out in the darkness! Thank you for the post.
OMG have not heard this song in years even though I was around 7 but just watched a classic Bewitched episode with Boyce and Hart with Serena I’ll blow you a Kiss in the wind the clothes and music was the best
OH SNAP!!!! I haven't heard this huge classic tune in years!!!! It's my favorite tune in the world!!! This famous and popular tune was also used in a Milton Bradley tv commercial 12 years ago. I would expound more on this song, but it'll be very boring so I'll stop here (lol). Thank u so much for uploading this huge classic :-) 60 stars all the way & playlisted :-) U MADE MY DAY BRO!!! :-D
@forgottenoldies Trust me, I understand. I do the same on my uploads. Nowadays, people want to post unintelligent, stupid and indecisive comments on uploads, which makes me so mad.

I performed this song for the talent show in 2nd grade. I had a strobe light, black light and everything else. I dressed like a hippy, haha. I was only 8 and now I'm 19. It doesn't seem that long ago.
Great song! I can listen to it all day! Whatever you ask for in prayer believe that you have recieced it and you will have it(Mark11:24) O my God I trust in you do not let me be ashamed do not let my enemies triumph over me(psalm25:2) God has given us such beauty on this earth ut aman trpapped in his own desires will miss this beauty! Christ is born!-Glorify HIm! Glory to God forever! Glory to God for all things! Hi Mary Kay Doak in Maplewood MO! Great Song! IC XC NI KA
Great, thanks...it was released as a single during the summer of '68 and was also on their first album..it reached only #86 on the charts, but was played quite a bit in the DC area on WPGZ. It is a great song- i am surprised no one has done a cover of it, but of course, hardly anyone knows the song....
"Reach Out Of The Darkness" by Friend And Lover reached #10 on the Billboard Top 40 chart, June 1, 1968.
I don't remember much about the 60s because I was acid most of the time.
Seriously, I remember this song quite well and it fit the times perfectly, even though a bit vanilla. I played this song on my Progressive Rock FM station in Southern California, in 1968, even with its love strings. Someone should redo this song with a modern arrangement without saying "Groovey." Thanks, Gere
I heard this song on Sirius and it brought back some long forgotten memories. Some of my memories I can't put my finger on but I think it was something to do with my first crush. My mom liked it also I think, but she passed on shortly after this. So mixed feelings.
i love these old 60s songs i grew up in oakland and hearing songs like this makes me picture what oakland berkeley and san francisco was like back then hippys black panthers brown berets chicano and indian revolutionarys must have been a kick ass time to bad i was born in 77 and missed it .....
This was a big hit from the summer of 1968 and was one of those songs that was terrific. There were so many of these songs that sometimes they get lost in history. For those who have never heard this, it was a big hit. Unfortunately, it was their only hit although I remember another song that didn't quite hit it as big. I am glad that I found it today. Thanks forgotten.
Too bad they don't make songs like this anymore :-(
Its baffling enough that songs have to have overt or covert references to love. But sexual cues with little to no musical value, c'mon! Today's music is garbage, and a recession is no excuse to fuck up chart toppers!
Bring back oldies, bring back disco, bring back funk, revert hip hop to funk samples because hip hop was an extension to funk in the first place!
I think this song is better than every chart topping motown song combined.
Thanks for a musical postcard from a time when so much seemed possible--then Martin and Bobby got shot and Nixon arrived. Oh well, we still have some good memories.
Love this song. One of my all time favorites. I thought it came out in around 66. The lyrics are so true. You may think you dislike someone until you get to know them. Give everyone a chance!!!!
Wonderful memories of the late sixites, as difficult as that period was. Although it came out in 1968, it seems to me it was played more frequently in 1971 and 1972
then disappeared around 1973. Someone comment. Thanks for the posting on this long-forgotton song to most but not all of us.
Thanks for posting! It's ashame there's not a good quality video of them singing this! This song has just a kick ass bass/drum hook with the great hippy songbird belting out "I think it's soo groovy now....."! Man, ya gotta love this catchy tune regardless of your music taste!
Please be patient. There are some people who like to place unacceptable things in comments. I have to manually approve them. Thanks for checking out my site!
Back about 1973-75 I saw the guy in this song, Jim Post, playing ssolo at a hippie coffeehouse at my college in Evanston, Ill. He was great, and could really play his guitar. During his set, he mentioned he and his wife had a big top-40 hit in the 60's. Everyone was puzzled, wondering what it could possibly be until he played a few bars of this song. Thanks for posting this.
For those of us of a 'certain age', this is not forgotten...but, their follow up single, which is every bit as good as this, is a 'lesser known'...it is called 'If Love Is In Your Heart'...the song and lyrics are just like this..can you 'Post' that song ?
great song...always loved it...listened all the time..still has a message for today's generation...memories of an earlier time...of hippies...loving one another..etc
Epic tune that captures the vibe and spirit of an idealistic era of political revolution and human brotherhood. A bit of Mamas and Papas in there. Unforgetable melody and lovely singing.
Not so! Look up "Friend and Lover" in Wikipedia and you will see the actual 45 sleeve that says "Reach out of the darkness". I hope this satisfies you guys. Perhaps it was a typo but it's the official title!
I only heard this a couple of times on Radio Caroline in the UK and i loved it ..but i didnt catch the artist name..its only now that i found out who it is
There has always been a lot of confusion about the lyrics. Some thought "Freak out in the darkness," "One day this man gave me a car," and more. I was a teen then and had no clue. Well, at least with Sinatra, you knew exactly what they lyrics were.
I think this song was released the week Robert Kennedy was killed in June of 1968. Ironic. First MLK then two months later RFK. It was the best of times it was the worst of times....great music but a dark year Vietnam assasinations,Chicago convention riot,Russia invades Czechoslavakia etc... Great song though.
I have the album with both of the songs..."If Love is in Your Heart" was played often in the DC area when it was out, but i dont know anyone anywhere else who knows of it- it is a "10", with a very catchy tune and great lyrics. I also note that you posted Canned Ham by Norman Greenbaum...if you want to hear and post a song that sounds exactly like him but is WAY better, try to find "Bluegreens" by William Truckaway. I heard the song in DC area in 1969.
If you are still posting new songs...you might want to post their follow up song called 'If Love is in Your Heart", it is every bit as good as this song....
i remember this, hey jude, marrakesh express and touch me, when i was ten. what an eclectic memory..all good, tho

I'll see if I can find it. Thanks!

Epic tune that captures the vibe and spirit of an idealistic era of political revolution and human brotherhood. A bit of Mamas and Papas in there. Unforgetable melody and lovely singing.

The drummer is as impressive as the bass player on this tune.

I think the hippie movement really had noble intentions early on....some of the greatest rock music came out of that era, there is no denying that.

I love this song, but the title is actually "Reach Out in the Darkness." The preposition should be "in" not "of." :)
ThomVYoung 2 years ago
Not so! Look up "Friend and Lover" in Wikipedia and you will see the actual 45 sleeve that says "Reach out of the darkness". I hope this satisfies you guys. Perhaps it was a typo but it's the official title!
forgottenoldies 2 years ago
Yeah, I realized that after I had posted my earlier comment--several times by the look of it.
I knew the lyrics, but I didn't realize until yesterday that the preposition was different in the official title.
It's sort of like the Eurhythmics singing "Sweet things are made of these" while the official title is "Sweet Things are Made of This."
Oh well. Live and learn.
ThomVYoung 2 years ago
Funny, if you listen close, she says "reach out IN the darkness" and not "of" in the darkness as listed as the song title.

True, but see my comment to ThomVYoung.

Great Post , forgot how wonderful these lyrics really are.. Love it Luna

There has always been a lot of confusion about the lyrics. Some thought "Freak out in the darkness," "One day this man gave me a car," and more. I was a teen then and had no clue. Well, at least with Sinatra, you knew exactly what they lyrics were.
defundthewar 2 years ago 2
Check out some of the YourTube vids of Joe Piscopo singing Sinatra. It's really goofy and cool at the same time!

What a groovy song!!!

I heard the song in DC area in 1969.
tremsfan 2 years ago 2
If you are still posting new songs...you might want to post their follow up song called 'If Love is in Your Heart", it is every bit as good as this song....
