Wii pays homage to Yoshi's Island just as it does the other Mario games. The subsequent Yoshi games aren't considered Mario canon, but Yoshi's Island always has.

I have actually seen Yoshi's Island frequently listed under the main series on Mario sites. I guess because Mario isn't the star is why it's not here, but Nintendo needs to acknowledge it more often (even the 25th anniversary booklet ignores it).
