  • I was going to play this for my solo, but alas it is not on the the list.

  • I don't understand why people play the beginning insanely fast, then slow WAY down for the triplets.

I'm looking at the music right now, and I don't see it saying "Blaze through the beginning like a maniac" and I don't see "Slow down A LOT because this part's really hard!" at measure 12.

WHY HASN'T ANYONE SAID THIS YET

  • I done this piece in 2 days ^^

  • wtf how old are you 14?

  • wow very well played. and i agree, permutations would be better to use then double laterals but to most people they can be pretty difficult. very well played my friend. also im jealous of your marimba lol

  • @Nazato123 Those are permutations you're talking about. Double laterals are the type of roll he used.

  • watch the tempo man.... you're taking the opening lick WAY to fast

  • really gotta watch the tempo..... very.... very fast at the begining

  • really cool piece.

  • Im loving that marimba,

  • i really enjoyed this thanks for performing and sharing

  • @iamtheonetolive I'm not taking about the technique but the moving, they're doing it now...kinda...

  • Is that a one handed roll at the beginning

  • You're downstroking.

  • What's the lowest note in this song. Can it be played on a 4.5 octave xylophone? Same with "Rain Dance"

  • WHOA the beginning was fast, pretty awesome (:

  • I LOVE your physical prescence of musicality. If I could get most of my front ensemble to look like you do when you perform I'd be thrilled. =]]]

  • The only beef i have is the beginning of the piece. It should be played half that speed. I know this is an old video and it really doesn't matter now, but Alice uses your video as a reference of how not to play the beginning of the piece. Other than that pretty good job

  • I met Alice Gomez and she said thats wayyy to fast. Just to slow it down like 20 clicks and keep a stedy tempo. it shuld all be the same tempo at the beginning

  • great sound dude. keep it up.

  • Man, left outside mallet...

  • It is HIS SOLO.

No he did not write/compose it, but it is his performance; he reserves the right to make it his own.

I personally (my opinion) prefer his version over the 'standard' version.

It is his own interpretation, if he wants to alter the piece a bit to fit his own ear, that's fine. There is nothing wrong with that.

    To gappani,

It sounds awesome. Great interpretation. Keep it up!!!

  • Before you begin bashing this guy, why don't you post your interpretation of this piece? I'll bet your playing is just as bad as your language!

  • Comment removed

  • u know what, ur a piece of shit for writing this. it is well played and people interpret pieces differently. why are people suck fuck faces.

  • u know what, ur a piece of shit for writing this. it is well played and people interpret pieces differently. why are people suck fuck faces. oh and i just checked ur channel. U"VE GOT NOTHING. do you even play?

  • if i didint play... then how would i be playing this piece at finals next weekend in allstate? the reason i dont film my preformances is cuz im to ghetto to buy a camera. and after i DO film a preformance of mine, i WILL put it on youtube dont you worry.

  • you should lift out of the instrument to produce a better tone.... good job btw

  • how old were you?

  • im way late on this, but i understand there should be some fluctuation in the tempo but the swtich between the opening statement (taken much faster than the written tempo) and the 2nd part (taken much much slower than the actual tempo) is alot bigger imo than it should be

  • What grade of a solo is this (particularly for FBA)

  • Hey I'm thinking of doing this piece this year and wanted a recomendation on what kind of mallets to use...what did you choose??

  • I played with bogdan bacanu signature series mallets by adams. If you ask me i would use medium hard mallets but not too hard because of middle slow section and because if they are to hard you hear to much individual notes. The mellody should come out everything else should me smooth.

  • you should of also used softer mallets in the left hand. beacuse you are mostly in the lower 2 octaves of the marimba with it.

  • i would of chosen the nebjosa multi tonal mallets on this piece if i were you

  • no, you use the vic firth ensamble series on this piece dumb ass!!!

  • you could make your left outside mallet a softer graduation then the rest of them

  • a couple wrong notes but overall one of the most exciting versions of this piece ive seen yet

    good job

  • I don't get why he has to serve up his piece in a CERTAIN tempo and speed.

Shouldnt he be able to just do it however he wants?

He's the one playing it and obviously feeling it while doing so... shouldnt HE be the one who decides how it's channeled to us or in what speed?

    I for one Love it!

    Keep it up ;)(Y)

  • no.

  • right on

  • Exactly. The role of the performer is to interpret the piece. to play what he or she feels the music means.

  • @MarCadeau279 How about this.

The piece doesn't call for a crazy fast opening, and a slow as fuck rest of the piece.

    It's a constant speed.

If he stayed at the same speed, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

  • @xXDP5150Xx

Bro, a song is written out for us to read it, and how it's SUPPOSED sound. We are all free to make the changes in tempo and the feel if ever we prefer it.. it's really sick.

  • @JerWillsher6 But is it also supposed to be butchered by someone who obviously didn't have the technical skill to do it?

  • @JerWillsher6 But is it also supposed to be butchered by someone who obviously didn't have the technical skill to do it?

This is, in my opinion, the best performance on youtube of this piece.

    /watch?v=wAFIZjuIpvg&feature=related

  • you are not stabile on the tempo....and you are going way to fast.........but is ok ;)keep playing:P

  • great but why so freakin fast in the begining. your supossed to go the same speed as the entire piece.

  • Is this high school or or college? It's really good!

  • Who are these Alice Gomez haters? the roll sections are the best; i honestly love every song she writes. Awesome job dude my only critique is that u use softer mallets for the lower octaves — it lets those notes hum like their suppose to — but that's just how i like to play it. Keep it up & where's the 2nd movement it's m fav

  • hey it stays at quarter equals 200 until the rubato section at 50 something w/ the lovely slow rolls stereotypical of alice gomez pieces. I can understand needing to take the triplet figures slower but if so you should take everything slower

  • Great Playing but...

Here's some critique i saw while wtaching your video.

You are going wayyyyyyy to fast and the tempo does not change like that thopurgh out the song.

  • another rolling section that make su depressed thank u alice gomez

  • the rolls are great. i love them on the fiberglass musser my school has, virtually no attack and all tone if you use the right mallets on the low bars.

  • love it =)

  • amazing video but (i think I told one of your friends this also... lol) try using double lateral rolls, much better sound then just block ones

    double lateral rolls = 1,2,4,3

    over and over :)

  • Ok. tnx.

  • Two weeks.

  • Hope you'll have as much fun as i did when played this peace. I'll try to do second movement to and post it here. Tnx for posting also.

  • Great! I'm in 11th and a college friend of mine just gave me a copy of this and I think I may try to work it up for Solo Contest.

  • i absolutely love this piece!

the first time i heard it.. i knew it was the right one for me.

but unfortunately my percussion directior wont let me play it this year.. so im gonna practice it so it'll be perfect next year! (my senior year)

and great job! i've listened to you play this quite a few times now =]

  • You need to realize that an independent stroke does not use the same motion as a double stop. Independent strokes require rotation off the tacit mallet, no arm at all.

  • what is the tacit mallet?

is it ur 2 and 3 mallets inside?

  • whatever mallet isn't moving, if you need to play with the 2 mallet, you move off the 1 (the tacit) mallet.

  • Just a couple of things...watch the notes the music has a lot of 4ths, 5ths, and octaves...wrong notes are easily heard. The tempo fluctuation in 200bpm section i think actually took away from the piece. I didn't understand the interpretation of your rolls do you can you elaborate for me? What kind of mallets did you use? they sound a little hard for this piece. Good technique and playing. I just think that you had some musicality issues. Good job overall though.

  • no sabes primo jjajajajaja pringau¡¡¡

  • you played the rubato section worng i dont know if this was intentional or not, some interval issues in the 6-4 section, you forgot the repeat at measure 91. Make sure the dotted eighth note chords are right they are big impact points, but other than that its a good start

  • awful transition between intro and the mid section. =(

if you start at that speed keep it up with that speed for rest of the piece.

  • do you think that a 9th grader could play this piece??

  • 9th grader means that someone palys percussion 9 years? If so, i think you could play it, but most iportant is that you feel ready to play it.

  • 9th grade means three years. but i want to play it my 10th grade year so i know that i will be ready

  • yes, a friend of mine played this as a freshman, and played it quite well.

  • of all the songs on the marimba... this is my favorite out of all the songs that i've heard!! thanks for the inspiration

  • That was great! You have the confidence and control just try not to take away from the peice. I do like it though. Veeerrrry excellent player.

  • Love your interpretation!awsome. You have great control of your mallets. Don't hesitate when you play. And if you do make it look like you meant to do that. :)

  • Tnx for posting.

  • oh yeah i see what you mean. when he goes slow-to-fast on those rolls? i see what you mean. it sounds alot better when it isn't done for looks.

  • not to be mean dude, but i really love it faster. and not such a long pause after the first crazy part. that's how i play it, a little messier, but i like the overall sound of it when it's faster.

  • thats what she said....

  • Also, on the ending... I would have played it a TON louder. If I remember correctly, it's not as soft as what you are playing. It's really loud. Leave the audience with a sense of finality. Dead strokes lessen the resounding finality of this piece, I think. Kind of leave the audience going, "Whoa, that was awesome," not, "Uh, is it over?"

  • You might want to check those chord rolls. Good playing overall. The intro is WAY fast. Nice interpretation. I've got a video on this too, but it's a lot rougher than your performance.

  • yeah there was a little empty hole in my memory when i came to that section :)

  • i'm 19.

  • idk what to say. most of it sounds pretty good but u speed up the intro part way too fast for my taste, and those chord downstrokes make me want to slap you. good job tho

  • I slapped myself, instead of you doing that :-). I'll correct those mistakes you mentioned. Tnx for posting.
