Yugo was a pretty bad car, but it is nowhere near the worst car I or my family's ever owned by any stretch of the imagination.

When my family lived in Asia I drove for a short while a used old Malaysian Proton, and a week after I got it, while driving, there was a horrible click sound of something coming loose and the steering wheel no longer controlled the car.

I was okay, but what a Mickey Mouse car!

The ad is pretty deceptive. One Lap of America at that time was run on public roads, and the idea was to achieve specific target times (e.g. averaging EXACTLY 55 mph from Indianapolis to Denver.) You got fewer points if you went faster OR slower than the target time. Plus the Yugo entry didn't win the event, or even win its class; they just name-dropped the makes of some cars that finished behind it.

the car was actually not that bad as everyone thinks...the main reason it failed in amerika is because it was that cheap....so people didn't bother much nor found it important to do the basics and maintain the car....such as changing the oil and belts when appropriate and so on....I mean shit these cars are still alive and kicking in Ex-Yugoslavia

Hey I had a Yugo and aside from all the jokes it was a bitchin car.Paid 400 bucks for it.Got awesome gas milage,engine was very smooth and responsive.Very simple,fit and finish was bad but it ran great,all week on a tank of gas (I think 12 gal. tank).

Hey man I've got a Yugo and it works just fine. When you learn to drive Yugo you can drive anything. Shure it's not that fast but all people aroun me who claim to have "better" cars get crashed and not to rarely die in those crashes while I'm driving and enjoying.
