Way way way too much negativity in Sunderland for me... we are getting a free bridge from the governments transport fund and all people can do is moan about it ?????????????????
great idea, but will we get the improvements to the road network to go with it? what we need is a central motorway from the a19, over this bridge, through the city centre and then out to rejoin the a19 again at ryhope.... apparently they are going to name it after the reigning monarch at the time of opening..... thatll be the king george the 16th bridge then, knowing sunderland council.
@flithyharry Damned right. A company wanted to reopen Doxfords a few years ago but were told they couldn't because of EU "anti competition" laws. Thats nuts.
@lewisner we got what we voted for - nobody foresaw the shite bliar was going to cause us, except spitting image. unbelievably enough people still blindly vote for that shower of shite and they are even worse now than they were then!
An £82.5m bid towards Sunderland City Council's New Wear Crossing project has been backed by the Department for Transport (DfT).
In an announcement today - Wednesday 14 December - the department confirmed it would contribute funding.
The crossing project is designed to help support further city regeneration and improve access for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians between the A19 and central Sunderland.
@lewisner to save the city centre we need to bring work in - get the vaux site all built up for offices/call centres, then incentivise the companies based at doxy park to move in. then demolish doxy park and find an industrial use for it, ala nissan. at the minute the city centre on weekday is as bad as aycliffe, its like dawn of the dead, full of unemployed scruffy etters and gormless old folk with nothing to do.
@hogalog That assumes that merely building a bridge will somehow magically make work appear. If companies don't want to open call centres there they won't regardless of how easy Sunderland is to reach (not that you need to reach a call centre anyway?) A more rational way to do it would be to lower buisiness rates to make it attractive to companies to be based there and build the kind of factories companies would like to use. If the bridge doesn't bring new trade it will be £250 M wasted
@lewisner its costing 90m.... and people (ie: the workers) have to get into a call centre, dont they? sunderlands infrastructure is absolutely woeful, no better now than it was in the 70s. this bridge and the supposed road improvements to go with it will be a godsend, anybody that cant see that needs their heads checking. (the amount of people in the city who think the money should be spent on more council houses and surestart centres is actually terrifying, its no wonder the place is fucked.)
@hogalog So the workers can't get into the "possible" call centres already, and it requires £90 million to help them?
I agree the place is f***ed but wasting money on a showpiece bridge will not help. It's like building a £90 million pound garage to house your Ford Cortina.
@lewisner if the city centre had jobs for people to go to, there would be gridlock.... you seen how bad newcastle gets? look at darlington, that is what sunderland should be aiming at. vastly improved infrastructure in the past few years and a town centre which is a pleasant place to be. sunderland city centre is a shithole, but how much nicer would it be if it was simply kept clean and tidy and the buildings properly maintained?
@lewisner cont from above: plus, the city council isnt paying for this. the department for transport is. if we didnt build the bridge, the money would just go somewhere else anyway. so we are essentially getting an iconic structure which will be known worldwide, for free? i dont see the problem myself.
@acemcloude If realism is negative then so be it. The town centre of Sunderland is a total mess and I think £90 million invested in it would produce a better return than a bridge which would merely serve to bolster the egos of the city council.
@lewisner You and certain other peoples realism is negetive, it's great for the city and is not coming out of the councils budget it's coming out of the governments transport budget... so if it was not sunderlands bridge it would be some other city in the uk....
@acemcloude BTW assuming it is funded from the transport budget, I assume you would agree that Sunderland station is an ugly depressing mess? Lets say you demolished it right down to foundations, then rebuilt it into something like it was in the 1960's with an overall roof and 4 platforms? I guess you would have plenty left out of the £90 million. Wouldn't that be a better use of the money?
@lewisner No i don't think it's ugly... depressing or a mess... i think its nice... see what i mean about negative.. assuming i think the same way as you... the problem with this city is not the place but the attitude of it's residence try taking some pride in your city even if you don't agree with some things maybe if outsiders see positive hard working people in Sunderland then they will invest in the place..
@lewisner i'm sure you will agree there is nothing worse tham going to a city and seeing unhappy angry negative people everywhere, why would anyone want to come back?
Nicest bridge I've seen but we'd be better off with two footbridges instead. One between vaux and the SOL and one between the fish quay and glass centre.
YES I AM FROM SUNDERLAND GET IN THERE!!!!

Looks really nice but for 82.5 mil I'd rather have Lionel Messi to the city.
