  • I am living proof that some people cannot learn more than one language.

  • @bnrshdydvdrtrk Yes the ones who don't really want to learn

  • @TheWizardWeiss Not true. I've tried, and I'm stupid.

  • @bnrshdydvdrtrk You are not stupid I bet you gave up because you got bored right ?

Well learning language may be not the most enjoyable thing in the world , but once you start having motivation to learn you go through it all and in the end you will see how much you've learned , trust me , if you give up you will never succeed ..

    Coming from a non-english native speaker ; )

  • @TheWizardWeiss No, I gave up because I failed.

  • Italian (school), English (natve tongue), Japanese (self-study)

  • I'm with you on the cult of multilingualism! If for nothing else, I love the internet for allowing me to watch such videos like this one!

  • Yes, I want an attractive t-shirt like that.

  • @Iceland1944 join LingQ and order one!

  • Haha..the way u promote LingQ is so cute!

  • "..excitement on multi-lingualism..." You definately got me :D

So far: German ( native ), English ( school ), Russian ( starting to do it myself )

  • @Leagman1 I suggest you get on LingQ which is where I learned my Russian.

  • @lingosteve thanks for the suggestion. finally someone who does actually answer to their videos^^

Thinking of multilingualism ias a life style seems very appealing to me x) i love languages, although i don't understand many.

Somehow school doesn't actually teach very much about languages, besides "you have to stuff that into you or you will go down". The part about language history in the beggining of the video, that would be something I'd be interested in when learning a language in school.

  • @Leagman1 you can actually speak english that good only from school! wow that is great maybe German schools are better because the schools heir in america are awful at teaching languages. Ich spreche ein gut bissen Deutsch!

  • I think people should learn to understand each other's languages instead of using Broken English (a.k.a. "globish") which is not a language but a sort of pidgin (half-language). Or even Esperanto (which is not an natural language). Let's better start to learn to at least understand as many languages as we can. Then we could each speak one's own language and be understood and there will be no need to resort to broken pidgins like Esperanto or "Globish"... Anyway, that's myy opinion...

  • I like your videos and in my opinion you are person with a lot of positive and constructive energy...hello from Slovakia:)

  • if you can speak Spanish.. u can speak Italian and Portuguese..

  • @ProKbron Undersand, yes. Speak, no. You have to be confident to be able to speak a certain language and if you never studied it, there's no way you're going to be fluent and comfortable in it.

  • Can you recommend any decent sources for learning languages? I am particularly interested in learning swiss german. Thanks.

  • I also fin that schools de-motivate people. but you motivate me :) I want to get a PHD in Linguistics. my goal is to learn 10 languages. My favorite is German. I have family in bavaria and they come to visit me alot here in Minnesota. I love it. it made me love learning languages. But what I want to know is...is it better to learn many languages simultaneously or spend my efforts on one at a time.

personally I like learning many simultaneously.

  • I only speak english but i recently became interested in dedicating some time to learn 1,2 maybe 3 more languages...any ideas where I can start?

  • I'll join the club. I speak three languages fluently and can understand about three times more languages.

  • count me in! i speak russian and spanish, and am learning mandarin chinese, hebrew, Hatian Creole, and French, Italian, and Portuguese.

  • Yeah, we have to figure out how we organize and what we should do. First thing is that we should be open to anyone, no matter how many they languages they speak.

  • I want a t-shirt like this! :)

  • I agree with you! I am Norwegian Pakistani. I speak Norwegian, German, English, Urdu and Punjabi. I can read Persian and Arabic but I don't understand it. I can read and understand Swedish and Danish. I can speak and understand Hindi. I want to learn Spanish and Italian!

  • I'm on board! I'm not an elitist. I work at a dollar store; you can't be an elitist if you work at a dollar store. But you can study Spanish, French, German, Russian, Chinese and Japanese!

  • In Luxembourg everyone speaks Luxemburgesch natively at home, French and German in school. Most educated people speak English. Have a looked into the methods that they employ in Luxembourg to learn languages ?

  • I have a question, is the human brain capable of absorbing or learning new languages?

  • Sure! I think the human brain's capable of absorbing new languages so long as we've enough time to learn languages. It's easy! it's all about immersion. The more you dedicate your time to learn languages, The more fluency and efficiency you get. Motivation is very important! and have that long breath in order to learn! 'cause language learning is a longw ay you have to take...

  • See for yourself, Steve speaks 10 or 11 languages, and is still learning new ones.

  • I know English and Spanish, now I'm learning Russian, French and Italian... I'm totally in!

  • im learning chinese russian german and spanish, im in.

  • 今日本語を勉強している。 フィンランド語も勉強したいんが、 暇がない。 多分2011の後で勉強しはじまるだろう。

  • Hi steve,

after getting quite far in my french i watched the news over the internet and i saw the polyglot club and i just wished that someone woul notice aswell. it would be amazing to have something like that in england or america. i love exploring diferent cultures and i think that multilingualism is a fantastic thing.

I'm in . thanks for the videos ... ils sont tres fantastique comme toujours

  • I agree...I'm an American but of South Asian descent. I'm currently learning Hindi, Hebrew, and now Spanish. I might consider Persian and Russian in the future

  • Assyrians have always had a streak of multilingualism, due to their small size and disposition to be merchants. In the later half of the 19th century your average (unschooled) Assyrian would be fluent in Assyrian (Neo-Aramaic), Turkish, Armenian, Kuridsh and Arabic. This was not uncommon for them at all, and to this day is a source of pride for those people.

  • wikiHowl is a big supporter. We even have an article over at our site about how to tell if your rat speaks english. Check it out. The idea of learning more than one language is super and that LingQ site you have is TERRIFIC and makes it possible for people to do it. And enjoyable too!

  • U r champion!

    Thanks for this video!

  • Très intéressant 真的有意思 Very interesting molto interessante

  • I'm learning spanish, I'm in.

  • I agree absolutely. Seven years of High school French maybe don't count for much but I'm doing Italian, German and Russian at uni now and they definitely do!! :)

  • I'm definately interested :)

  • Im a 25 year old community college student learning japanese and korean!! Im aboard!!

  • Je veux boire beaucoup de l'essence!

  • Greetings from the Atlantic! Steve, I think a website specifically devoted to multilingualism would be a fantastic idea. Thanks to your videos, I decided to sign up on your site.

  • Sounds good. Unfortunately I doubt there would be enough people interested in my area. It'd probably work well in Europe.

  • I'm almost positive Steve speaks Hebrew.
