Its not a classic in the Jane Austin or Charlotte Brone sense, it does have some good qualities, but the acting at times makes me cringe, eg., when the girls are told about the sinking of the Titanic, its like you were telling them about yesterdays walk in the park, very bland. I am getting bored with it.
I am disappointed at times with this series for eg. when they are in the morning room having their breakfast and the news of the Titanic is told, apart from the Father's reaction and his wife's:,, the daughters reactions seem to treat the news like it was yesterdays old cabbage they had heard about. How did you react when you heard about the Twin Towers, shock, disbelievment, couldnt stop talking about it i would not compare Downton Abbey with any Classic Jane Austin, Dickens Charlotte Bronte
@Triantha1 Please note that this isn't the USA. People in other countries don't ball and wail over disasters everywhere. News of it happening did come to the UK, but we didn't freak out. When the UK was hit with our own terrorist attack in 7/7 we didn't overreact either. You can't expect everybody to act the same way >_<
@PrNycTina1091 ITV, the broadcaster of the program here in the UK, have said that the seccond season will air in late 2011 on UK television and that there will also be a Christmas special.
I live in England and watched all of this during the autumn, it is beautifully filmed, the acting is first class and Maggie Smith is a complete legend! Her facial expressions are to die for and her lines so well delivered. Elizabeth McGovern is without doubt one of America's finest actresses. This is highly addictive and beautiful television! Roll on later this year for series 2!
I studied abroad in London this fall and saw this series on TV while I was there. It was absolutely fabulous. I can't wait for the second season to come out.
So glad I get to share it with my family and friends now.
Just ordered Season 1 and pre-ordered Season 2.
I'm British-American and yes, my American college friends love it.
Just...let up on the "Yank" remarks, for Heaven's sake. There comes a point when presumed hilarity falls flat.

@MrYables- Too bad you can't loose your arrogant attitude. I don't like being referred to as a Yank, and yes, I love this drama.

@iLoveLadyDiana Don't be offended by the "Yank" term - it's quite accepted by erm... Yanks. Be thankful you are not French.

Cora: “I might send her over to visit my aunt. She could get to know New York.”
Lady Grantham: “Oh, I don’t think things are quite that desperate.”
Sybil: “Nobody learns anything from a governess, apart from French and how to curtsy.”
Lady Grantham: “What else do you need? Are you thinking of a career in banking?”
Cora: “Things are different in America.”
Lady Grantham: “I know. They live in wigwams.”
