I play the djembe in the old African drum circle in prospect park, nyc. I've been able to get pretty good over the years, but I see a big difference between the technique of good African players and myself. The good - aka skilled in technique - African players will throw in a long fast-paced rapid-fire like beat, the way Mamaday did towards the end of this video.
I still dont get it..it doesn't add to the rhythm. It's impressive he's able to drum that fast, but it doesn't 'fit' the structure
@drago884 When you say it doesn't add to the rhythm I wonder if you've ever heard it done live by good african musicians. The first time you see a good djembe fola it's jaw dropping - you can feel the slaps and tones resonating in your body. Certainly adds to the rhythm for me. Of course there's some extreme syncopation going on from time to time but that's west african djembe solo for you. It certainly 'fits' the structure as far as they are concerned. I think it's beautiful.
chaotic?? Why... just because your ears arent trained OR accustomed to listening to this kind of music?? If you cant play it (which I know you cant), or know what it means (the rhythms)... EVERY rhythm played has a MEANING and HIstory... there is PLENTY of mystery for you pal... Dont show so much ignorance...
that's sick!!!

That could most likely be due to the quality of the video...
Drums have frequencies/vibrations, low and high, that are beyond the range of even some high quality recording equipment.
Live is the only way to hear music like that. I bet that room was full to the brim of beautiful percussive harmonies intertwined with complex rhythms.

You really have to see him live. As good as they are, none of the videos I've seen do him justice.
