I took full advantage of what I was offered (Education, gov. funding for business, etc.) and I'm thankful for that. I am now Successful, and living a very good life. Other natives can be to. It's all about what you choose to do in life. The only "Indian problem" is the lazy ones that don't want to better their own lives, and blame others.

I am not meaning to suggest that because my ancestors were held back by the Indian Act, that me and my family are still being held back. My ancestors were, but I'm half-Scandinavian, so haven't had the same racist experiences as they had. @bobbobertson0 There's racism, but the Indian Act, which regulates Aboriginal peoples in every area of their lives, does not force any other group in Canada to live under such an oppressive act. Reserves are Canada's Third World, where basic things, e.g., like clean, running water and indoor plumbing, mould-free housing, poverty, etc., are not always there. Y do so many blame the victims, who never asked to be penned up and held back from society, society and its institutions did it to them.

Abolish the "Indian Act" Now. Indians are Canadian. Yes they were conquered by superior forces with superior technology and determination. No more hand outs. I have delivered to reserves across Alberta. I have also tried helping them in Ontario. 90% of goods delivered to reserves are potato chips, candy and pop. The natives that own the stores charge their own people double what is normal in stores in Canadian cities and towns. They dump sewage directly into pristine rivers and lakes. Teen pregnancy is rampant. They teach their children to HATE non natives and see all Canadian land as their land. Take it all away! Chiefs are rich! They expect more!

They have no pride in their surroundings or themselves, they are living on welfare and do not even try to improve conditions for their children. There is a trend of obesity in Native cultures because their lifestyle before the Europeans cane was based on eating natural products in small quantities as they were available. Once food was plentiful, their systems became overloaded with excess food and couldn't adapt. Reserves are Canada's Third World, where basic things, e.g., like clean, running water and indoor plumbing, mould-free housing, poverty, etc., are not always there. Y do so many blame the victims, who never asked to be penned up and held back from society, society and its institutions did it to them.

I have delivered to reserves across Alberta. I have also tried helping them in Ontario. 90% of goods delivered to reserves are potato chips, candy and pop. The natives that own the stores charge their own people double what is normal in stores in Canadian cities and towns. They dump sewage directly into pristine rivers and lakes. Teen pregnancy is rampant. They teach their children to HATE non natives and see all Canadian land as their land. Take it all away! Chiefs are rich! They expect more!

Once food was plentiful, their systems became overloaded with excess food and couldn't adapt. If we took an existing town in Canada, and made investment illegal, it would also become poor.
The problem is the very notion of a reserve. I understand that this land was stolen in the beginning, but nobody responsible for that is still alive. End the economic isolation because before that happens, these communities will always be poor. There is no financial reason to build anything there at all, because they're economically separate from the rest of Canada.

@awake2012nibiru I agree completely with you...and I am not whole heartedly native..I do have some native anscestory enough to look native but I was brought up in the white man's world with native traditions only in regards to what I was taught to eat or the odd time I was told to do a rain dance,lol Sorry but it didn't work in my world...any way God bless and take care of yourself use your wisdom to strengthen your people and be a blessing to others!

@imalikconnor That's a ridiculously foolish comparison to make. Those things happened many centuries ago, while the systematic & genocidal oppression facing First Nations is ongoing, and unresolved. In fact, I have friends whose parents survived the notorious residential school system -- the effects are inter-generational and undeniable.
You see when you speak about things in which you are poorly informed, you make a fool out of yourself. Try researching before opening your mouth next time.
