  • Oh yeah, those harmonics are badass too!

  • Believe it or not, I bet I was part of his inspiration for this piece! I think overall, Dunne enjoyed his brief stay in the wild lands of Appalachia, but I never imagined him paying tribute to it like this!

  • Jerome is my favorite guitarist that isn't that famous. He such a wonderful musician and Dunne is a unique composer. I just recently got his 9 Jazz etudes. Somewhat difficult because not all of the measures have specific fingerings, just one fingering to lead the rest into place. In a way, its preparing me to be able to read and play without fingerings.

  • I just listened to Marcin Dylla's version and it sounded bad compared to Ducharme's interpretation.

  • i love black metal and i love this i wish cut do that but that well take along long time

  • As much as I admire his skill and the composition, I tend to fall asleep when watching videos of classical guitar. It's just a bit too easy to not listen to. But then maybe that makes it 'easy listening.' Dunnooo. I'd only have it on if I was sitting on a villa porch trying to relax in the sun...

  • Matthew Dunnes going to play some pieces on guitar at my University guitar class tommorow.

  • He's just fine playing what he's playing.

  • He's playing a Rene wilhelmy guitar.

  • what guitar is he playing? friedrich??

  • Is there anyway to get his whole set on a dvd? Also I would like to know if the Marcin Dylla set could be put on there as well. Jerome is a phenomenal player, but I prefer Marcin. He came to Madonna University back in April and I fell in love with Marcin's playing.

  • i just bought this piece and i must say so far its forced me to really think carefully about the fingerings. the LH positions for this genre of repertoire are pretty unconventional when compared to say a classical piece like Sors.

  • you gotta make up your own man. For part 1 of the piece I hardly use the 1st string because it says "lyrical" so it means alot of vibrato and usage of the 2nd string @ higher positions. also avoid using 1st position or open strings IF possible. :)

  • I have this music. It's almost totally unfingered. Does anyone know a way I may be able to play this video back at a slower speed so I can watch his fingering more effectively?... OK, cheating I know, but for us lesser mortals.

  • Boepyne: It seems to me that the majority of the song is not very fast and the fast parts are not scorchingly quick either. If you have the music and you can determine what (fret) position he's playing in, that's all you need to figure out the left hand fingering. What struck me more is the right hand technique. That's gonna take some serious practice.

  • Thank's for your reply. It's just the fast sections (2&5). I've figured out the 2nd section now with a combination of his fingering and my own. The 5th I think is going to be the stinker; he's got a fantastic RH - playing those chords with the thumb and coming back so accurately with the fingers!

  • save the video on your disk using an applet or a dedicated website (lookup "saving youtube videos on disk" with google) then, using VLC player, you can watch the video and speed it down at will.

  • Thank's for your advice, and it may be useful another time. As for this piece... well, I've got it now and all memorised, though some of it I've still got work up to speed (or somewhere near it!)

  • i like that he doest played one piece wich sounds happy i like that it sound lonly how i like it all alone and feeling what it means

  • Wonderful. So many textures pre

  • Definitely one of the best guitarists I've heard this year. He has speed but doesn't kill it by being mechanical. Great tone as well.

  • he has speed, not just tempo.

  • Well, if you want to get into the details, I would have to say that he has the accuracy that allows him the ability to play it at tempo. That is, the tempo that was written for the song.

  • vraiment beau bravo

  • such a brilliant piece, and, obviously, magnificently played

  • This is beautiful pieces, full of diverse expressions and movements. Well done!

  • Can i find the score from this song from somewhere?

  • denials...i can't stop watching this video. was there a whole gfa video that one can purchase?

  • damn...some of those chords are so delicious...this is one of the coolest pieces i've heard in some time

  • I sat FRONT ROW, right in front of him when he played this at Grand Rapids Community College last winter. Like 10 feet away. He played it exactly the same... perfection

    I love this piece!

  • hey danechka, i recently just ordered a rene wilhelmy and his current price (at least before 2008) is $8500. It may or may not go up after the new year. jerome plays one with brazilian rosewood back and sides so that would up the price a little bit on the guitar, although im not sure how much. your best bet would be to email wilhelmy and ask if you are indeed interested. cheers!

  • ... or order the wonderful 7 string of his, that we have for only $5,500.

  • @alankulka That's Great!!!!!!!

I also want to order a Wilhelmy guitar in a few years. You probably already have yours, so how is it? Any comments? I would really like to know if he has Indien rosewood, on his site he on shows Brazilian and Honduran. Those guitars are hauntingly beautiful.

  • hello sologuitaristnet thanks for your response just one more question...do you know how much this guitar cost ?..thank you very much !

  • I have a good idea, there is a 2 year waiting list for a new instrument. The seven string is a real steal at its listed price. Please contact us privately to continue this discussion.

  • oh my fucking god !! what a sound !!! what kind of guitar is this one ?? i dont think is any rodriguez or something like that...anybody can tell me what exactly this guitar is and the model ??..thank you very much

  • 2005) René Wilhelmy Concert Guitar. René is a wonderful Canadian luthier. Google his website. The sound is as much about Jerome as it is any guitar. Annie Labrie of Similia has an incredible 7 string by Wilhelmy (1997) listed on our commercial site: SoloGuitarist(dot)Net

  • it's a 2005 René Wilhelmy, from Montréal.

  • Do you happen to have Marcin Dylla's performance?Or any other GFA finals for that matter?!?!:):)

  • Yes, but Marcin would have to agree, before we would be able to post anything. Another incredible player, Wow! We will see. It is most interesting to compare. It was so close, but I understand why Jerome won.

  • Once again, thanks for sharing your goldmine of guitar videos! Boy I wish Maestro Cobo's nail video had close-ups!:)

  • Posted!

  • really a great interpretation.

    thanks sologuitaristnet

    :)

  • Thanks Giorginho!!! This is the set piece "Appalachian Summer" that was written for this competition. The competing guitarists received the unpublished score about eight weeks before the competition. They had no reference for interpretation other than the printed score. Jerome chose to open with the piece, playing from memory. Memorization was not a requirement. His performance is fantastic, very moving. Matthew Dunne is commended for writing such a great piece of Music.
