Utter cllattering magnificence. I seriously doubt anything like this would turn up in the music shops today? It would be shunned for being "crap"/ a real real shame
Apparently they did this after going down the pub and coming up with the idea to all play each others instruments. It was done in one take first time.
they might not have been the most competant band in the world but you've got to know how to play-to make something so bad sound so bloody good.hilarious.rip viv the world is a duller place without you.
My apologies sir, They were the most competent band in the world!
especially when you consider their contemporaries .This is 1969 !!!
The Beatles would have been "holding hands" and" love love me do" had they not fallen under the influence of the Bonzos. If you don t believe me, ask Mc Cartney
@bkeay100 The Beatles had made their Sgt. Pepper period by the time they knew of the Bonzos. What the Bonzos did for the Beatles was offer parody songs such as "Your Mother Should Know", and almost half of the songs on the White Album. Then there's Ringo's "Octopuss's Garden" from Abbey Road. Yet the Bonzo's were not around for "Yellow Submarine" in 1966, so maybe the influence is there, but not as strong as you think. IMHO, "Happiness..", "Piggies", " WDWDITR", "Honey Pie", were Bonzo infl.
@strangeones4 The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band appeared in the Beatles movie Magical Mystery Tour and sang their song "Death Cab For Cutie" - now a band name for another band . ....Paul McCartney and Gud Dudgeon produced their biggest hit single written by Neil Innes called I'm The Urban Spaceman" #5 on the UK charts in 1968.
@Mindermaniac I know, that's why I'm well aware of the connection. They influenced each other. After the Bealtes broke up, Neil Innes was writing John Lennon-esque songs for the Bonzos. Innes was perfect to play the Rutles "John".
@gyphia - not quite sure why you are making that point to me. I was being critical of someone saying that it was bad
@chrishove123 - Crap musicians? Maybe even The Quarrymen got bad reviews in their "early days", but if Paul McCartney asked them to perform in Magical Mystery Tour", they can't have been bad, and I think he knows what he is talking about! Viv Stanshall RIP, and Neil Innes would have something to say
@Gyphia Actually if you read their history they admit they were crap musicians and even worse at studio production. There is a review of them playing a club in their early days and getting things wrong. They would just laugh and take the piss out of themselves. They knew their limitations but could pull it all off with great elan and bravado. I love this band and have done since I was a kid listening to them in the 60s.
hello old boy lets have a glass of ginger beer and some cavior sandwiches and a good old bit of the bonzo band what do you say mr Apollo mr slaters parot says hello to all Bonzo fans
If you were lucky enough to go to a pub in the 70's where they advertised 'jazz' on Sunday lunchtime you probably heard something like this. This is indeed a masterpiece, it takes a really good musician to sound this bad - or good. Thanks for putting this out there.
OMG! Their name matches their sound! Are they all drunk?? I have heard many a drunken jam session descend into this. lol. Particularly like the loss of beat in the middle and everyone plays on the on-beat. lol. it is what it is. nothing more. lol
I only watched that film for this song after spotting it in the trailer. Was miffed to have sat through that tripe just for one song right at the very end.
@bobilleg74 They were/are multi-instrumentalists and familiar with brass & woodwinds. Some of their siblings and friends were members of "The Temperance 7" that did old-time jazz and novelty music, so they were very familiar with the style.
British jazz drummer Lennie Hastings was famous for the "OOH YAH!; OOH YAH!; OOH YAH!" bit that the Bonzos parodied here.
~ Dedicated to Kong who must have been a great bloke ~
As recommended by Excellent Garments - "They fit like a glove and wear like iron."
Accept no substitute - Get your "NEW CYCLOPS collectors monocle" here! To see it is to believe it, to hear it crunch underfoot is to know its sound ,-)
Oh yes, Please believe me. (I was in hospital for a week but) I got as far as the oboe! I have heard people say there is a drum solo towards the end but I think that if I heard that it would be the end of me!
This has got to be the maddest music ever!!!! I Love It :)
