@hyllaf In that case; sign me up for The X Factor and I'll get this fucker to number 1....the blind sheep buy anything Simon Cowell endorses these days. Just pop it up slightly and hey presto
This video has something for everyone! The more high-minded get Archives of Pain with all the Manics at the top of their musical game. For those at the shallower end of the pool, there's JDB at the height of his podginess and Nicky Wire in camouflage AS WELL AS a skirt. Couldn't ask for more...
The Manics have really improved live since they started using additional musicians. You can hear how sparse it sounds without the rhythm guitar here when James is doing the solo. I always thought their sound needed filling out, and it allows James more freedom to do the songs justice. I saw them the other week and they blew me away, so good.
@deadspaceastronaut They never played it in the '90s, 2001 was the first time they ever played this song live. If I remember rightly, it got dusted off for 2004 and 2005 tours too.
You remember correctly. They changed it slightly in 2004, and James did the first verse and chorus on his own, with the band kicking in on the start of Verse 2. It sounded amazing.
@PantheonLincoln I'm going to be pedantic here. The 2004 version was James on his own playing an acoustic rendition, alas without the solo. The version you refer to was the 2005 version from the Past, Present and Future tour. I was fortunate enough to witness both twice.
@ronktgen "The best guitar player ever" What a huge overstatement Paul Gilbert, Matt Bellamy, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix just to name a few are way better and have more songwriting skills. His singing isn't as good as you seem to think, nor his melodies. Not the best singer, or guitar player. Not saying he's bad but come on, be realistic, he's not the best anything.
For the Manic guitar fans, I know I've always tried to follow James' guitar choices through the years; if you look real close at this particular Tele-custom it has a floyd rose tremlo. Hmm.. does James use it throughout the song as I can't really see the whammy bar. Interesting, any ideas folks?
Hey - It's actually a Hipshot Trilogy TMB-2 Telecaster bridge... designed for quickly changing keys. James has this fitted to a couple of his Tele Customs. You can change the tunings really quickly this way. Archives of Pain is in a Drop-D, so that's why it's applied here. Funnily enough I notice his brige pickup is a beefy Seymour Duncan STL-3 pickup here.
ive never seen them play this or revol live at a gig! but i love everything off the holy bible! i remember last time i saw them live thy played yes! great lyrics on that song! :D and despite james' 'fat' period, hes still hot here! and how the hell can you beat that guitar/bass line! the drums ar great too! :D
exactly my point, i think it is one of ritchies, coz the only black guitar he sometimes uses, is his Gibson Les Paul Custom (video on youtube, found that soul live in brussels)
I don't think it is. Richey uses a Telecaster, all black. I'm sure, and I have that guitar too. This one here is slightly different... a Fender Telecaster Custom, all black too. God, James is a legend... he plays great.... and what a voice!
Yes, but i mean that some ppl thought that this guitar is the one that Richey 'used' in Glastonbury '94... If I'm right. But these are two different kinds of telecasters. Anyway, two of the most beautiful guitars of the world for me :)
Well, I've always prefered Fenders... but I must admit that the Gibson I'd love to have should be the alpine White! :) I know that since I first saw 'If you tolerate this your children will be next''s video.
James's got a great taste in guitars, I envy him. ^^
yeh i was there and i couldnt fucking believe this song was being played.first album i reallyu got into was the holy bible in 1994 when i was 14 so .....was amazing to here this at my first manics show.saw them twice on the send away the tigers tour and they are still amazing
Epic. That solo always makes me go into some kind of seizure...
On the album sleeve thingy it says the words are "Kill Yeltsin, who's saying?", but until I read them I always thought he was singing "Kill Yeltsin, Hussein..."
These guys rock my little socks off.
Fuck, if you could rape a guitar solo, I would that one...
'Not punish less, rise the pain' sounds just like it does on the bible, and the solo is almost identical, JDB you hero!

Thanks for the video! I've always wanted to see how James manages the solo live. And he just does it, no problem. The best guitar player ever.

And I love the little cymbal ring at the end - perfect touch.
robertoshorto 3 years ago
That's not a cymbal ring, its played by picking the top two strings on the nut of the guitar.

I know - a trick Ed O' Brien uses a lot. Sean also does a little flash on the cymbals too.

what guitar is james playing with, Richeys one?
Dext37Fielding 3 years ago
No, I don't think that was one of Richey's guitars.
It's a Fender Telecaster custom, one of three that James has. He also has a black one, a Red one and a blonde one.
James still has Richey's thinline Telecaster and used it on Kevin Carter among other songs, usually tuned to open G.
PantheonLincoln 3 years ago 2
cheers...

Does look a lot like the one he used at Reading 94 though (Richey's).

He used a '72 Tele in Natural Finish. He also used a black Les Paul Studio and has also been seen with a Goldtop LP (Suicide Is Painless, TOTP).
"Used" - For want of a better word. I suppose the more appropriate term is "posed with"!
