  • 'Not punish less, rise the pain' sounds just like it does on the bible, and the solo is almost identical, JDB you hero!

  • Was this taken from the then Yahoo! live stream? :). Great stuff anyways, thanks for uploading, love this band and expect the full broadcasted songs from the Reading 2008 performance on my channel!.

  • See Sean is wearing his beret from the Holy Bible

  • nick said if an x-factor winner ever covers a MSP song - this would be the one!!!

  • @hyllaf In that case; sign me up for The X Factor and I'll get this fucker to number 1....the blind sheep buy anything Simon Cowell endorses these days. Just pop it up slightly and hey presto

  • This video has something for everyone! The more high-minded get Archives of Pain with all the Manics at the top of their musical game. For those at the shallower end of the pool, there's JDB at the height of his podginess and Nicky Wire in camouflage AS WELL AS a skirt. Couldn't ask for more...

  • lol at 00.40 ...WIRE!!!

  • The Manics have really improved live since they started using additional musicians. You can hear how sparse it sounds without the rhythm guitar here when James is doing the solo. I always thought their sound needed filling out, and it allows James more freedom to do the songs justice. I saw them the other week and they blew me away, so good.

  • Manic Street Preacher's are the perfect musical machine.

  • God I love playing that solo! Hope they play this on the new tour, not just Everything Must Go.

  • Very powerful song!

  • FUCKIN SOLO

  • I miss Edwards

  • Nailed It! no surprises there!

  • "This is where I get to play the longest guitar solo we ever recorded."

"James, James, James, there's been a few of them haven't there?!!!"

"Not as good as this little Mumma!"

  • i wonder who you think you are

this is the centrepiece of The Holy Bible

  • In was there and it was the fucking bollocks!!!!!

  • shit! i had no idea they were still playing this in 2001! nice. x

  • @deadspaceastronaut They never played it in the '90s, 2001 was the first time they ever played this song live. If I remember rightly, it got dusted off for 2004 and 2005 tours too.

  • @nasalscarecrow

You remember correctly. They changed it slightly in 2004, and James did the first verse and chorus on his own, with the band kicking in on the start of Verse 2. It sounded amazing.

  • @PantheonLincoln I'm going to be pedantic here. The 2004 version was James on his own playing an acoustic rendition, alas without the solo. The version you refer to was the 2005 version from the Past, Present and Future tour. I was fortunate enough to witness both twice.

  • man i love nicky!

  • At 00:40 , does James shout "WIRE"?

  • @VivNick08 I always thought it was "Oh YEAHHHH"...now that you mention it, i think it IS "WIRE!!" hahahha...

  • this has been pulled up from the archives!!!

whoever put this up is a true manic, well in mate

  • Genial, qué guitarra. Increible.

  • Best outro ever!

  • i was there, thanks for posting this :)

  • arrgh! love this band. i auditioned with this bass line for a music college today! they liked it! =] thank you manic street preachers! lol x

  • OMGWTFBBQJDB

  • ps can't wait for london gig!!!!god i hope they play this!!!!!!!

  • my favourite track from bible!!!what a tune!!!

  • That is just amazing! Thanks so much for uploading this mate.

Great to see them all kitted out in the army paraphanalia....must've been some gig. James' solo is immense! pulled off to perfection.

cant wait for the glasgow gig now.... :oD

  • Thanks for the video! I've always wanted to see how James manages the solo live. And he just does it, no problem. The best guitar player ever.

He's also the best singer ever. Wonder what that feels like?

  • Not to mention being an all-round nice guy!

  • @ronktgen "The best guitar player ever" What a huge overstatement Paul Gilbert, Matt Bellamy, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix just to name a few are way better and have more songwriting skills. His singing isn't as good as you seem to think, nor his melodies. Not the best singer, or guitar player. Not saying he's bad but come on, be realistic, he's not the best anything.

  • dark beauty

  • i think he mullered and Christened Richeys guitar on this one lol.

  • james, marry me!!!

  • AWESOME..

    Best band in the world.

  • DAMN FUCKING RIGHT MATE!!!

  • nice!

  • Tear the torso with horses and chains !

  • are there any live mp3's of Archives of pain on the web?

  • Tongue in cheek comments come accross poorly on the internet, I'm affraid.

  • oh piss off.

  • For the Manic guitar fans, I know I've always tried to follow James' guitar choices through the years; if you look real close at this particular Tele-custom it has a floyd rose tremlo. Hmm.. does James use it throughout the song as I can't really see the whammy bar. Interesting, any ideas folks?

  • Hey - It's actually a Hipshot Trilogy TMB-2 Telecaster bridge... designed for quickly changing keys. James has this fitted to a couple of his Tele Customs. You can change the tunings really quickly this way. Archives of Pain is in a Drop-D, so that's why it's applied here. Funnily enough I notice his brige pickup is a beefy Seymour Duncan STL-3 pickup here.

  • Hey, you're not the only one, thanks for the info. James is a brilliant guitarist.

  • Then be a little more discerning about the comments you copy.

  • I would like to express the FACT (not opinion) that you need to learn how to write properly.

  • tell that to the poster

i just copied what he said on another vid

  • LOL. Pendulum fanboy.

  • i know one song by pendulum

  • And that tells me you're a cunt.

  • tell me what type of music ur into, cause u jst carnt slag of the manics and give no reasons or say what music ur into

  • so why are u slagging them off when u dont even know anythin about them, and have no reason

  • So you slag a band you don't even know off for petty reasons in an attempt to get one up on me?

You moron. At least I don't like Pendulum AFTER hearing them.

  • then why are u expressing your hate to them

    we dont care

btw i did listen to this video they are terribad

  • lol!!!!

  • Before I watched this, I thought he was gonna go into an improvised bit in the solo, but he did VERY well indeed.

  • I love that solo!!!!!!!! One of my favorite all time solos, genius!

  • what a voice..to sing and play all that at the same time...unbelieveable..what a leg end.

  • And I love the little cymbal ring at the end - perfect touch.

  • That's not a cymbal ring, its played by picking the top two strings on the nut of the guitar.

  • I know - a trick Ed O' Brien uses a lot. Sean also does a little flash on the cymbals too.

  • Where's the Flying V??!

  • He was in the Churhill Arms in Nottinghill a couple of weeks ago.

  • thankyou thankyou thankyou! I lost my video with this performance on, i was there!

  • ive never seen them play this or revol live at a gig! but i love everything off the holy bible! i remember last time i saw them live thy played yes! great lyrics on that song! :D and despite james' 'fat' period, hes still hot here! and how the hell can you beat that guitar/bass line! the drums ar great too! :D

  • That bassline is pure evil.

  • yeah, i think there's loads of really evil sounding stuff on the holy bible. mausoleum, die in the summertime, 4st 7lb...

it's really not possible to give james enough credit for writing that music.

  • well sean helped too! lets not forget him! sean rocks!! :D

  • what guitar is james playing with, Richeys one?

  • No, I don't think that was one of Richey's guitars.

It's a Fender Telecaster custom, one of three that James has. He also has a black one, a Red one and a blonde one.

James still has Richey's thinline Telecaster and used it on Kevin Carter among other songs, usually tuned to open G.

  • cheers...

  • Does look a lot like the one he used at Reading 94 though (Richey's).

  • exactly my point, i think it is one of ritchies, coz the only black guitar he sometimes uses, is his Gibson Les Paul Custom (video on youtube, found that soul live in brussels)

  • I don't think it is. Richey uses a Telecaster, all black. I'm sure, and I have that guitar too. This one here is slightly different... a Fender Telecaster Custom, all black too. God, James is a legend... he plays great.... and what a voice!

  • He used a '72 Tele in Natural Finish. He also used a black Les Paul Studio and has also been seen with a Goldtop LP (Suicide Is Painless, TOTP).

"Used" - For want of a better word. I suppose the more appropriate term is "posed with"!

  • Yes, but i mean that some ppl thought that this guitar is the one that Richey 'used' in Glastonbury '94... If I'm right. But these are two different kinds of telecasters. Anyway, two of the most beautiful guitars of the world for me :)

  • The '72 Tele is indeed stunning but for me you just can't beat JDB's Alpine White LP! =P

  • Well, I've always prefered Fenders... but I must admit that the Gibson I'd love to have should be the alpine White! :) I know that since I first saw 'If you tolerate this your children will be next''s video.

James's got a great taste in guitars, I envy him. ^^

  • yeh i was there and i couldnt fucking believe this song was being played.first album i reallyu got into was the holy bible in 1994 when i was 14 so .....was amazing to here this at my first manics show.saw them twice on the send away the tigers tour and they are still amazing

  • This was the first time I saw them live. And my word, this was the best song in their set. I "almost" wet myself with excitement!

  • Gosh, it's in moments like these I go back to loving them like i used to when i was in my teens!:)

  • Epic. That solo always makes me go into some kind of seizure...

On the album sleeve thingy it says the words are "Kill Yeltsin, who's saying?", but until I read them I always thought he was singing "Kill Yeltsin, Hussein..."

These guys rock my little socks off.

Fuck, if you could rape a guitar solo, I would that one...

  • :) same here , I always thought he sang Hussein as well

  • ALL I PREACH IS EXTINCTION

i would actually have cacked myself had i been there

  • cant believe he nails that solo so well live, best song off their best album.

  • I was at Leeds that year, right on the barrier. I nearly had a heart attack when they played this track.

  • he's a bit good at that isn't he.

  • great solo in the end, love it

  • fucking sweet! Love it when a live gem like this finds its way through the archives!

  • wot a tune!

  • Wow this was great. And yeh it is a pretty long solo.

  • Awesome

  • i was at this gig amazing...never seen this video b4

  • Some very nice member on Forever Delayed uploaded the entire Reading 2001 show.

  • the entire show? do you have them on here

  • epic!
