Ripper is an amazingly talented vocalist. Though I didnt care for Demolition or Juggulator that much, I really like Rip's style a lot - should have been a guest on the Epitaph tour, maybe had a duet with Rob on one of the songs from his era.
@ttappourokolou It's possible, its just hard to top. You have to hit those insanely diverse notes - and its just near impossible for any human to do 100%...he is the metal god.
Some can come close, I am one of them - I get nervous though - and I admit that I am not as good of an actual singer as I am at getting up to the notes I need if that makes sense. Ripper is an EXCELLENT vocalist, and that isnt an opinion, its a fact. He is charismatic and he gets those notes. Cont in a second comment.
with ease. The problem is Rob is SO flamboyant and energetic with Priest (not as much now), that you simply cant follow his act, y'know? It's like when AC/DC had to replace Bon Scott - they debated just breaking up altogether because they simply didnt think it would be possible to replace Bon, but then they got Brian, and he is the next best thing. Ripper is much like Brian in the sense that you cant replace the original, but you can continue the band...continue the legacy.
I've listened to every single one of halfords own "live" versions of this song and none of them is as good as this one. Sure, no one can beat the original soundtrack but this is by far the best live version I've ever heard of this very demanding song.

@HuberttXXX17 That's where many people are wrong. Tim didn't make Priest heavier, because it was Glenn and KK who wrote all the songs on Jugulator and Demolition.
To all the haters out there!!! Pathetic... you guys are pathetic... Think about it, you have to give credit to The Ripper.. why you ask? Well if Ripper had been the original singer for Judas Priest and Rob the replacement than you would be saying exactly the same thing you guys are saying about Rob.. You'd be saying yeah he is good but Ripper is the Metal God no one can replace him... B/S everybody is replaceable and could even be better than the original... Same shit with everyother band.
we're not talking about factory-work - it's an art, where the main thing - is "individual". U can't replace individual...

@faulesach Yes and it is pretty anoying. Ripper cannot sing as high as Halford, but there are some people who doesn't want to admit it. Ripper is really good, but he struggles with this one. Halford is one of the best vocals ever and the only singer for Judas Priest. Cheers!
Owens is a nice singer... but no one can be compared to Rob Halford. God, Halford is one of best singer i've ever heard. His voice always sends me shiver down my spine... And this song is one of the best ever of Judas Priest.
I totally agree witht he folks here tht Ripper , vocals-wise is probably even better than Rob .... but I think he needs to slightly improve on the "fit" part of it... He somehow doesn't fir into the whole "deadly" image tht the other members of the band, including Halford, carry ... I think over time that may change though...
Owens low register is far superior to Halfords, it has more definition. Halford's upper range in his prime, however is unmatched. Nowadays though Ripper owns him in both departments
@ak47dragunov Halford is superior in low register too, not just in high. And he has full-blooded, more powerful voice. Why do you thing he got his nickname? Not everyone can be a metal God. He earned it, because he's one of the best vocals in heavy metal. It's like you're comparing Blaze Bayley with Bruce Dickinson. And, even he's like 60 years old, he sings with more power than Ripper.
of course halford is amazing, but owens is undeniably an amazing singer as well, his stage performance could be alot better do, at times it dosnt even look like hes into the song
I don't care what anyone says, Priest's double live CD Live Meltdown, Owens belts out some of the finest live Judas Priest I've ever fucking heard! There is only one Rob Halford and there is only one Tim Owens! Ripper's "Diamonds and Rust" is legendary!
lets be real, ripper could never touch halford in his prime. currently i would still rather listen to the sixty year old metal god than ripper owens, but i would rather listen to ripper than pretty much anyone else
I love Halford, but it seems when Ripper entered the band, Priest got a whole new sound. Now they sound so much meaner, and have an extra hard edge to their music. I wanna see Halford and Ripper sing on the same stage together.

To each their own. My opinion, Halford had some moments when his heart just wasn't in it. The big trial and coming out as a gay dude took it's toll on him and his ability to perform as great as he had. I saw them twice in the early 80's when I think his voice was at it's best. I think he hold's one of the greatest voices in any kind of music.
omg, i know u people probally wont believe this... but i think me n my band can be like the next judas priest...kuhz our guitarist is like the complete shiit (hes only 15) and our drummer is badass as fukn hell!!( he just turned 15) and i can sing every judas priest song every pitch!! n im only 14 :) dnt know if u guyz believe that but its true :D
Nice man but maybey your voice will change and you will become a man.... :p you are too young and your voice will have more bass.... so you will loose some high note s or your frequency at high area.... But i Hope tha best for you!!!!! :D and for your band... ;-)

when a major band replaces a lead singer, it is mostly disapointing for the fans. i will say though that ripper's voice was a strong needed ingredient of venom this deadly band needed. this performance is great, rob, though the king priest, has lost his crisp cutting power. ripper has brought it back. not ripping rob at all, just keeping an open mind as a fan.
Rob is getting better though, but I agree, Owens brought a great edge to the band when he was with them, even though Demolition pretty much sucked lol
Ripper's voice is more suited to the more modern Priest music (all the "classic" records are great with Rob's voice but somehow his voice gets left behind, at least live, by the much heavier sound they have these days). I don't give a fuck what anyone says Priest is doing it in this video. They never stopped, and seeing this shit right here them without Rob pumps me up more because they didn't put down the gloves
He is a good vocalist, but Rob Halford is as irreplacable as Ozzy or James Hetfield. More so in my opinion, he is one of a kind, and thius guy makes priest sound like fucking nu-metal with their dropped tunings. What makes priest, priest is that they always maintained the british metal sounds in their tunes. It's lost here. BUT NOW IT'S BACK!!!
Am I the only who noticed how HEAVIER Priest got while under Ripper?? You hear the tuning it's much lower which gives the music a deeper, heavier ,darker sound. I figure it's to compensate for Ripper who's vocals are slighter lower than Halford's during the lower vocal parts. But in a way I kinda liked the heavy Priest lol
Tim Owens is a great singer. He ain't as good as Rob Halford, but I think the main problem with Owens is just that the majority of their material they wrote with Owens just sucked. He's surprisingly good at singing their classics though. He's just still not as good as Rob Halford, but there is no shame in not being as good as the Metal God.
Everybody has his own opinion and meaning about Ripper. Fact is that there wouldn't have been a London gig those days if it wasn't for him. Although Judas Priest IS Rob Halford, i think Tim tried his best and he did a pretty good Job if you ask me...
Ripper is better. Why?. Coz he is younger than Rob.
Rob was great like Ripper now, when he was 20-35 year old.
For vocalist age is important. After when you are 45 years old your voice change coz your vocal strings are not that elastics and strong like before, the same with your lungs. james hatfield vocal has changed, tom araya too. Ripper Owns, Rob- Respect.
I wish Rob could sing like this again!!!

I don't give a fuck what anyone says Priest is doing it in this video. They never stopped, and seeing this shit right here them without Rob pumps me up more because they didn't put down the gloves

aha on a completely unrelated note in this video tim owens looks a lot like larry the cable guy
keithhollett123456 2 years ago
not that it makes a difference but priest has never played with dropped tuning, they just downtuned to c standard for the ripper years
keithhollett123456 2 years ago
He is a good vocalist, but Rob Halford is as irreplacable as Ozzy or James Hetfield. More so in my opinion, he is one of a kind, and thius guy makes priest sound like fucking nu-metal with their dropped tunings. What makes priest, priest is that they always maintained the british metal sounds in their tunes. It's lost here. BUT NOW IT'S BACK!!!
sparkyMPM 2 years ago
Doesn't sound a bassy as the studio version did. By the way, that doesn't look like rob.
sonicfreak12 2 years ago
Am I the only who noticed how HEAVIER Priest got while under Ripper?? You hear the tuning it's much lower which gives the music a deeper, heavier ,darker sound. I figure it's to compensate for Ripper who's vocals are slighter lower than Halford's during the lower vocal parts. But in a way I kinda liked the heavy Priest lol

Halford is not a god, he's human and Owen is as good as was Halford at his age.

Finally a decent coment, wrote with brains and not with the ass. Thanks dude, I totally agree !!

Tim Owens is a great singer. He ain't as good as Rob Halford, but I think the main problem with Owens is just that the majority of their material they wrote with Owens just sucked. He's surprisingly good at singing their classics though. He's just still not as good as Rob Halford, but there is no shame in not being as good as the Metal God.

rodrigorockers360 2 years ago

Ripper Owns, Rob- Respect.
jarekariel 2 years ago
very true, 1 complaint, tom araya never had a good voice... everything else make your rant very applicable
