  • I remember having this vinyl, with its multi-coloured shapes on the record. Many great memories relating to this album. Definitely a classic 80's record.

  • I went on tour with these guys in a band called pop mechanix on the outback tour they were fab bunch and eddie raynor produced our first major album as the zoo.. name change happened coz a band in oz had a similar name to us but the guy who sued us died of aids not long after..poetic justice lol. great mems guys they were awesome live by the way.. Kevin Emmett NZ.

  • @1957kevy Hi Kevin, I'm in contact with Rob from Failsafe Records. I've provided one unearthed video ('Jumping Out A Window') which is found on my 'nzoz1981' channel and I have the clip for 'Private Military', which I will be passing on to Rob. I really like Pop Mechanix and I'm sorry that you guys had to change your name due to Popular Mechanics. I hope the Pop Mechanix compilation gets a proper release in Australia - it's a ripper! Cheers, Ryan (nzoz)

  • This song is magic.

  • I was an Original split enz FREAK! This song still gives me goose bumps! BTW,I still am a huge Fan! Xo!

  • How did this wonderful song fall thru the racks?! Thank goodness for youtube to let me surf and find such gems as this!

  • @jerramy It got a considerable amount of exposure at the time: watch them perform it on Solid Gold.

  • I used to totally love this guy. Pfft what was I thinking lol

  • who's the better singer ,neil or tim?

  • @chippydan Tough question

  • awesome! thankyou! love it!

    some memories there, 4 sure.

    <3 ONYA

  • Probably one of the best ever break up/heartbreak songs. Ever. Period the end.

  • How did Split Enz manage to create a song so raw and heartfelt, yet so polished? Modern musicians, please take note!

  • Ah the Finn brothers ~ so so good

  • JEEEEZ! Were Neil and Tim Finn ever THIS young???

  • NT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this song is soo sweet. amazing

  • Such a lovely song by one of the most under rated and talented bands ever..Thanks for posting

  • One of their best ever...what an amazing band!!!!

  • Come on Tim's beautiful voice and the band....I hope I never have to hear the end of them....

  • Beautiful song, very haunting. Top band. My eldest brother used to go & see them all the time & said they were always excellent. He mentioned one gig where they supported Bowie in 1978 (at Bondi Pavillion, I think he said) where they looked & sounded mad, dressed up in their coloured theatrical Pierrot-like costumes & bouncing giant coloured inflatable beach balls around the stage & into the crowd.

  • @vanessamcqueen11 Yeah these guys were soo different to everyone else. I don't know how they physically survived in New Zealand looking like that in 1980 :) Awesome band that i'll never forget. Good voices and talented artists. Good comment VanessaMcQueen ;)

  • They were quite easily the Killers of their day, only better.

  • classic puberty blues

  • good memories by this song........great!!

  • neil finn made SPLIT ENZ

  • If I'm Tim Finn, leader of popular new wave band and I just laid down the video to this classic for the ages...........I've got my Victoria Secret mag out browsing for a super model.

  • a magnificent piece

  • So hauntingly beautiful... truly one of my favs

  • Nice.

  • this is such a beautiful song. have always loved it

  • This was Tim Finn's little F*%k You message to Phil Judd.

  • @boomshanka not quite.... its just tim being fluffy.. he called phil up to say gday and phil was busy so phil told his wife (at the time) julie, that he doesnt want to talk to tim at the moment... and tim took it all personally.. thats the sort of person tim is...

  • nice 'carnival of souls' atmosphere vision and sound at 3:00 for the next 30 seconds.

  • @nzoz1980 I've been looking for the video (not actually sure if there is one) for Small World. It's not actually on here and Iam just missing it is there?

  • @avi8tr11 I dont think a clip was made for that song.

  • @nzoz1980 Thanks for the info. I really like this song and it is proving difficult to find. Well, not really. Most of their CD's are on Amazon for a reasonable price. I just wanted instant gratification!

    Thanks again.

  • Such a beautiful song.

  • whats so cool about this era is the amount of songs that glued themselves like ghost my memories. so glad im not a teenager today. that would de a real depressing wank.

  • @80sOGRE They'll be saying the same thing in 30 years' time.

  • I believe this song is about depression...along with dirty creature...but this is my fav enz song...

  • I believe this song is about depression...along with dirty creature

  • love the enzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Hows the piano solo? Is it not the most beautiful piece of pop piano ever written?

  • Love the song, first time I have seen the vid. Thanks for the post.

  • i love these lyrics, story of my life, time to break free from the leechers, and rotten people.

    wonderfull song!

  • Loved this song in Puberty Blues! ♥

  • God, I love love love this song. Tim has a greatly expressive voice.

  • One of the greatest from the Enz, EVER

  • Neil gets a lot of the kudos but shit Tim has had some challenges in his life. that I wont elaborate on here. I love them both but Tim is every bit as talented as his brother.

  • @Rapidelapid well let dangle a carrot - fuck off LARD.

  • @TheOldEchoes

    You're a tool - a complete spanner

  • @Rapidelapid Now, come on, you insinuate you know Tim. Well, at least you know your tools :)

  • @Rapidelapid Err... Tim was one of the founding members of Split Enz. Neil was a little kid when they started and only joined once he was old enough. He was really only around for the second half of the band's career. What you should be saying is that Neil is every bit as talented as his brother.

  • @rotcafarg 6 of one , half dozen of the other 'bro! And to kill two birds with one stone for the Old Echoes benefit, I don't know Tim, haven't inferred I do but have read the biography, Together Alone and have discussed with members of Midnight Oil, who I did once know casually through gigs etc and who know Tim and Neil and Paul Hester et al - enough said?

  • @Rapidelapid Ok, you win ;-)

  • Life's no fun when your haunted by the things that you fear.

  • What can i say if ever a song said how i feel then this is the it .... from a guy in London England way to go split Enz .

    Ehem... best wishes anyway!

    Greets from the NL

    ;)

  • Oh the memories, when MTV was what it was meant to be,not this bullshit they have on for the last 15 to 20 years now, these guys were highly underrated,i really liked them and still do.

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful song...I think Tim was always underrated, but his voice is utterly gorgeous. Split Enz will always be a favorite.

  • i remember seeing these guys on countdown when i was a kid...

  • Hey nzoz1980, thank you for posting all the Enz videos. Really. I've been a BIG fan of theirs since about 1981 (or whenever MTV came on and I first heard "I Got You"), and every now and then, I have to revisit all of the videos. Finding them all here is a huge treat. You rock.

  • @kristine1969 Thank you very much Kristine, I much appreciate such positive feedback! I thought somebody has to give Split Enz videos the best treatment. I like to think I did that!

  • this is stunning. i've always loved crowded house, and a few split enz songs. I just started listening to more stuff from the enz and this was one of the ones i'd never heard... i'm blown away by this. hauntingly beautiful.

  • No song, no poem, no painting, no creative expression in the history of mankind has ever so perfectly captured what it feels like to be a 14 year old boy in love like this song. How brilliant is this? It can't be measured. "I fall apart when you're around. When you're here, I'm nowhere." My god.

  • I'm learning this song for my school's Performance Choir, because we're entering a competition with a New Zealand song, thanks for a video of it. But this guy creeps me out a little.

  • @Authorgirl2 the lead singer? Don't worry, it's only the make-up. Well, that and the fact that he's really upset at a failed relationship. One is sure you know that. Jesus went through similar atrocities and still kept faith. Moreover, the emo thing- perhaps don't write stories about "killing" etcetera eh? Oh, yes, for a naive individual you do have a wonderful ear for sound! All the best to you and good luck in your competition.

  • @parksy010101 well done!

  • great split enz tune......such variation in thier songs!!!!

  • is that neil or tim singing

  • another split enz tour, one of the concerts I have ever been to, great music, lyrics a haunting sound that is brilliance

  • I hope i never have to slit my wrists again, ive always said this song was the generation of emo. The rest of split enz rules though..NZ FOR LYFE

  • Nice... I like Crowded House better though... Way better.

  • ta se, touching song with fine vocals n piano accmp, they wrote many good songs, neil still is! ( crowded house) n solo.

  • I remember being in bed and my family was watching tv.

When I heard this song I had to jump up out of bed to see who these people were, and I got hooked for life. These two still move me, to this day. What greatness they offer, I hope they never stop!

  • I remember being in bed and my family was watching a tv program. When I heard this song I had to jump up out of bed to see who these people were. 30 years later I am still hooked on these two boys. Greatness is their gift!

  • This is the song that hooked me in for life. I love these two boys. Greatness is what they share, is so much. I remember hearing it on a tv program and jumping up out of bed to see who these boys were. Here it is 30+ years later and They still move me.

  • First concert I ever went to! My favorite song of theirs.

  • is this really a 1980 song? i thought this came out in 1988. anyway, i like this song..

it's chords are not that common in pop music.

  • love this video.. one of my favourite music videos ever!

  • I remember turning on the TV to watch "Countdown" on channel 7 and video taping all these videos of Split Enz....It feels so good to be able to hear the songs and watch the videos again after so many years.

  • I hope I never have to hear modern day garbage again.

  • Brilliant song, like so many Finn songs

  • nzoz1980 . . . Thanks for posting, I remember this video from a cable syndicated TV program called: Video Music Hall. It played music videos, almost a pre-cursor to MTV. I was very young, and had a paper-route. Thought I would stay young forever. Can't believe 1980 was 30 years ago! ! Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna pop a coupla Valiums and do a coupla shots of Tequila. Ha-ha ! ! LOL! ! The lead has good hair by the way. "Bouncin & behavin!" By Pert shampoo was launched in 1980 ! !

  • No worries... The video was made by Chris Lofven; a very nice man and one of the pioneers of music videos.

  • To right mum

  • Truly one of the saddest love songs ever

  • UK friends of the ENZ,we follwed them from Hornsey art college to Hammersmith Odeon which was as big as they got .Very underated

  • This should have been a big hit in the UK!.

  • As songs go, I hope I never have to go without this song now that I've heard it.

But, not having heard it, means I wouldn't miss it if it never happened.

Life goes on. As it does whilst not having heard other songs that would help to satisfy.

My life without these songs that I have enjoyed becomes emptier without them if they were to go.

And then I think of all that I haven't heard, and realise that waking up each day is worthwhile.

  • leonard cohen almanac?

  • Todays stuff is noway equal to this....1980...new artists take note.

  • lisa millers version on the finn tribute album is amazing

  • great enz tune showing thier range.

  • oh i loveddddddd this song as a teenager

  • Love the style, really enjoyable!

  • omg, i never saw the video to this song, but i remember crying when i listened to it...awesome...

  • It is like a reminder of the past that never seems to be happening

    But that appears to be!

  • Mooi he!

  • does anyone know the song with "below the belt" chorus? Have got it on a vey old tape and it is driving me mad cause I cant seem to find it.Please someone put me out of my misery

  • wonderful song this too

  • Priceless....

  • Magnificent..

(isnt this off that movie, "

Puberty Blues" - aussie film not too bad actually)

  • Yep Sutherland Shire / Place of Cronulla Riots / Puberty Blues.

  • Wicked movie hey

  • One of the truly great tortured love songs, heartbreakingly haunting. Brilliant song, brilliant orchestrasation and a vocal to die for. Thanks for posting.

  • Would love to see Flight of the Concords cover this! It would be soooooo over the top!

  • @7714808 I'd rather drink Paul Hester's pee than see this reduced to some sub-Barenaked Ladies shite, thanks.

  • Heartbreaking.

  • Is it just me or is there a reference 2 this song in the Presets "If I know you"???

  • Yes, there is

  • of corse and full of sickness could have been unjust .talented band ,but come on i think they were trying to be turkishtaffy goofy and square deliberatly bonzo76 rockon!

  • Comment removed

  • *Bang*

That's a really mean thing to say about such a tortued genius that is Mr Tim Finn.

Anyway, since you've already made comment about The Saints and Radio Birdman on my other accounts, I take it you're into music a little leftfield. Have you tried any earlier Split Enz. They weren't always 'full of sickness'.

  • i would like to hear tony bennett sing this but can he do it at this stage? but isn't this music video precious?... doesn't it make you long for the old days even with the wacky hair-dos!

  • Wonderful song, Tim Finn's haunting, tortured vocal, Eddie Rayner's brilliance. Awesome

  • A truly heart-wrenching fabulous track -long live the Enz!

  • Someone said that Neil is dancing with his future wife Sharon in this video. Is that true?

  • what can i say i have been a fool ,we have all been there .still regretting the words we said or did not say ,, i hope i never .i sit here a stupid fool a dam fool a broken fool ,what ever you do tell her or him you love them dont end up a sad fool ,a lonely fool ,a stupid fool .

  • Awesome. Brings back many memories.

  • heart wrenchingly beautiful..

  • omg so puberty blues :( :(

  • Wonderful song. Hear that aching chord on "happiness is back in style" and later on "I'm an optimistic man".

  • simply super

  • I can't believe I'm saying this... but wouldn't you love to hear Tony Bennett sing this song?

  • Brilliant!!! thanks for posting this one nzoz1980. never had seen the clip to match the song, really good quality. still always reminds me off puberty blues when i hear it tho.

  • not in to the other bands they were aka crowded house

  • i love most split enz songs this is different and...a masterpiece!!!i only like the finn bros. in the enz.

  • Totally forgotten this song. It's a very good song. Nice 'sad' melody.

  • Wow impressive even after all these years! YOU go FINN

  • genius

  • That's such an awesome music video! Love it! Thanks for uploading! Doing a school project on Split Enz and your videos are really helping! Thanks!

  • they didnt like us anyway tim

  • Re Charlie wake up rise and shine..

Please excuse me, I wrote a comment and pushed the button before I could say so much as thanks.

  • Great song, used for an Australian movie classic Puberty Blues 1981. Any-one who has seen this, will know. And No-Body Takes Me Seriously another Split Enz song!! Well done.

  • nzoz1980 - could your please add "Charley" by Split Enz?

    I'd be grateful!

"Wake up Charley - rise and shine..."

  • I don't have the video for Charlie! :-(

  • @ nzoz1980

    re Charlie -

    thanks for your answer.

I'm from pre-YT-age and whatever else have you with modern means.

Couldn't you post the song without a video

  • @nzoz1980

There wasn't a video for Charley/ie. It became a crowd fave at their live shows (says someone who's been at a few too many on either side of the Tasman, LOL)

  • This is such a lovely song, and watching these old Split Enz videos is great. Thanks for posting it up there.

  • Thanks for reposting this in better quality. Great stuff!

  • have you tried adding &fmt=18 at the end of this video's URL. Just copy and paste &fmt=18 at the end of the URL and see the sound quality that it produces.
