Chipwhitney274, you need to get out in the dog world more often. I work for a Government Agency with my K-9 partner & it's a must to protect our K-9's paws at times. My partner wears his boots when ever chemicals might be on the ground or while inside a building that may have chemicals on the floor. Even in the dessert while he searches for a cadavers or tracking he needs the protection from cactus needles that would other wise get stuck in his paws or a bruised pad. Hot pavement while tracking
My dog actually has a paw condition n they blister every time she has a long walk/jog, she requires these to do activities. It's not common but some dogs sometimes do need things. I wouldn't think about getting these if she didn't have a problem or was so active.
There are products I like from RuffWear, but other than the the slightly better traction because the boot spreads wide snow shoes are useless for dogs. This is just a gimmick to dupe naive dog owners into buying a product. If anything, make proper wide frame shoes (like human snow shoes) if sinking in the snow is a problem.
@Chipwhitley274 a huge problem can be with dogs that have long fur on their legs and paws. In wet show conditions, this can get problematic as the snow clunks up in between the fingers and on to the back side of the leg fur. This can at longer exposures lead to frostbite. I've seen even small rocks freezing to the fur and staying in between the fingers. So for some type of dogs this can be a real plus.
