  • Bill Lawry: "Lance will be hearing bells at the moment- Ding Dong, Ding Dong!"

Don't think Ken MacLeay got to play much for Australia after this. Did he even play a single test?

  • @Flagfalls Vintage Billl Lawry in there. Shame they gave the mics to someone else, by the 6th six, Bill would have lost it completely.

  • One handed six over the longest part of the great MCG, epic. When cricket was clean and every team had character/s.

  • Yey this guy is my coach at school

  • 3.29 if marsh did go up with the bowler the umpires decision might of been diffrent im a bowler and if my keeper didn't go up with my appeals as captain he wouldn't be playing the next game

  • Remember this game! Brilliant!! Cheers for the upload mate!!!

  • Kiwi Folk Law.......What a momment in our Cricket History!

  • even though this was 30 years ago its still one of the greatest short innings of all time even though i am Australian i totally enjoyed watching it...i loved the commentry also.

  • Lillee will never bowl bouncer at Lance Cairns

  • dennis lillee - beautiful bowling action at .57

  • I was at that game. The match was on the way to an early finish and Cairns came out and decided to have some fun. Even Aussie fans were cheering and were disappointed when he got out

  • wow! Nonchalant, giant sixes at a huge ground. Honestly think Lance and Chris Cairns were the biggest hitters in modern cricket history. There are plenty of other six-smashers but nobody has quite matched the meaty casualneess and sheer size of the sixes these two hit

  • remember watching this! lol amazing

  • Just out of curiosity , does anyone know what day of the week this was?I remember watching this as a kid and I think it was a Sunday......

  • Great innings by Lance but a terrible game in context for NZ.

It was a big thing in those days, winning the World Series Cup, especially considering this was NZ's first series back in Australia since the 'underarm' in 1980/81.

NZ went into the 1982/83 WSC finals as favourites, winning the preliminary round of 15 matches with Australia and England, with several memorable victories. However, losing Richard Hadlee to a hamstring injury on the eve of the finals was a disaster. We got thrashed.

  • Just wondering...if Cairnsy had opened a few times instead of having a blocker like Edger in with Wrighty what would happaned? Ok, probably a fair few failures but crickey, just need one or two innings to come off and NZ would have been off to flyers and maybe even redefined cricket before Gilly and co started playing? :)

  • what makes this innings more amazing was the boundries of the mcg were all the way to the fence back then, not like they are now, has to be some of the bigest hitting the mcg has ever seen.

  • @pramboy09 or the postage stamp sized grounds they have in New Zealand

  • @IanGorton do u have any idea the size of the boundries of the MCG in 1981 ???

  • @pramboy09 According to Wikipedia the dimensions are Field dimensions are171 m x 146 m

  • @IanGorton Back in 82 thd boundries of the MCG extended all the way to the fences, now the rope is alot of metres in from the fences, which makes cairn's sixes so much more an effort to now.

  • Classic innings, even to hit Lillie and Hogg back over their heads for six is impressive enough, and then the one-hander etc WOW Love the commentry too, Bill Lawrie hasn't changed much, and when he hits them, they stay hit !!

  • Bittersweet for NZ.

We should have won that series and were on top during the 15 match preliminary round but Hadlee got injured on the eve of the finals won 2-0 by Australia.

I remember cheering for Cairns but feeling sick that our dream was over with such a hiding. Losing by 149 runs in this second final was a travesty and pretty distressing to watch.

Australia scored a record 302-8 and NZ was 6-44 when Cairns came to the wicket.

  • Lance Cairns was not really much of a batsman, although he could certainly hit the ball.

    130 test wickets.

  • 8:54 That 6 over deep backward square leg was epic. One handed over the longest boundary in world cricket!! It went about 10 metres over the fence and Lillee was the bowler. It was also amazing to see Greg Chappell clapping the shot. He was fielding and could only watch it sail over his head.

  • man rodney hogg was not a happy camper - go the big fella

  • Waited to to see this again for years!!

  • a great moment in n.z cricket even though we lost

  • thats for uploading. this is gold!

  • they bowled in his spot didn't they??

  • Yeh Chris Cairns ka baap hai ! Maan gaye!!
