  • hi, i would like to know what file u used, the image. and if not specific, what particular type and how it affects the texture.

    thanks.

  • I have a question, maybe you could make another tutorial or have a simple answer to my solution. ^^; I'm wondering how you would go about animating the water and maybe having water interactions with other objects. Nice looking water though.

  • I would like to know why you would use a shader like this when you could use the ocean shader that's in Maya. Is this more accurate looking for stills and the Ocean shader is better for animation ?

  • Decent tutorial, thanks. I'd suggest explaining the "why" along with the steps. Why add the photo? Why add the +/- node, etc.Was a bit fast in places, but otherwise good. Cheers!

  • Wait why do you have to import an image? And what the heck are nodes and stuff? Also very cool water :)

  • How would you go about adding a small bit of animation to this?

  • @ComposedBaZ You could replace the fractals by similar evoluted (animated) fractals made in a program like after effects.

  • @ComposedBaZ just gonna share what i did for a little animation.. this is one of the ways and just mix other techniques you know.. you can apply a wave deformer.. and adjust amplitude (how big the waves are) then key the offset (you'll see when you try this).. also on the fractal node.. check the "Animated" option on the fractal attributes and key the Time

  • @ComposedBaZ oh!! and by the way.. the fractal node that i talked about was the displacement map.. NOT the one connected to the +/- average

  • is speed 2x ? xD

  • if input 3dn is not showing up, you are doing the selection wrong

hold the middle mouse button and FIRST select FILE then Select the "Average"

  • Whats the difference between Maya and 3ds max?

  • @Gynejas13 Well the simple answer is that maya is more complex and 3ds max is for noobies lol. 3DS Max is for Arch-Viz and maya is for cg and animation

  • @Gynejas13

both are good but I have found max easier to use because it is more "auto"

but maya is better, although the learning curve is a bit steeper, I have more satisfaction creating things with maya than by max

Maya also gives more control over your model and for me that is good

  • the pace is fine for me, nice tutorial!

  • Perfect pacing for me. Don't change anything.

  • cool stuff

  • hi mate, just wondering how you would animate this water? cheers.

  • What the Funk is +or- A......How do you figure all those things out

  • blah blah blah nodes blah blah blah texure blah blah blah value blah blah

    talk slower dude

  • That part when you connected the nodes to the +-A node didn't work for me. There was no middle input 3D menu.

  • You teach like my teacher at college, fast with cool lookig results.

Which setting is it which gives the reflection of the box in the water?

  • thnx for your tut, my water turns completely white

can you help me fix it?

  • thank u.....

  • What is the purpose of the +/- Average utility?

  • Are you high? It was to fast man! but good tuts btw...

  • thanks that helped a lot, just talk slower next time

  • can u pls tell me whr i can get maya 9

  • @likith09n will pm you the link

  • @likith09n

Yes you can find it here: autodesk.com ... :D:D:D

    ...yeah, isn´t it?

  • Hi man, first of all thanks for the tutorial. Unfortunatedly it didnt work out for me. The image I used was one of a blue sky with clouds and a sun (fabiovisentin-dot-com/photography/photo/25/cloudy-sky-with-sun-dispersing-cloudsdsc03863-2.jpg) with a high resolution, but it still appear somewhat low resolution. And the results are crappy.

Can you help me? Im using Maya 2011 - Mental Ray.

    Thanks

  • explanations needed.

  • dosent wrk for me on mya 2009 when i drag the file or fractal on average operation is sum only it dosent connect i cant c option input 3d if i add in them i cant connect

  • S-L-O-W---D-O-W-N

  • excellent tutorial. would like to see the animation. i'll give it a go myself. thanks

  • Water needs to have fresnel in the reflection! otherwise it's just dull chrome!

  • why do you use the plusminus average node? im new to maya shading and although i know its purpose i dont understand when or why to use it

  • @mullensk8r7

If you look in the Attribute Editor with the node selected, look at the 'Operation' drop-down list and see that it's set to "Sum". Since he doesn't change this, it's just adding the 2 colors from 'Fractal' and 'File' together.

  • @1:34-1:42, mines doesn't do that. when i try to drag the picture it moves instead of that green line showing up!!!

What did you click @ 1:34 that the mouse changed?

All that dragging stuff isn't doing it on mines.FOr me this tut fails so badly. you weren't very clear on what to do.

  • @sailornaruto39

You need to draw while holding down the middle mouse button.

  • @sailornaruto39 middle mouse button, i wondered at a earlier tut, but now he says it to, finalyXD

  • Umm, quick question. Are you on speed?

  • @propanobend haahahahaha i wonder that to lol!

  • @propanobend i wonder that too

  • badass :)

  • 1:34 hkjfgbasdufbasdlfgsial?? WHAT????? How do I drag it on it???

  • noob here what does average? (what is it use full for the benefits of it?) hope someone can help

    thanks

  • how about water animation...with realistic stuff lol

  • Its a really great outcome and tutorial... the effect looks nice and its easy as well. But I cudn't get the A+- hypershade thing. What does it do basically??

n do u have any tutorials on water animation.. like waves or splashes??

thanks for this anyways... nice work :)

  • Dude have you taken speed lol? Your doing it way too fast. I heard Blender is better for water effects what do you think?

  • Terrific tutorial! Keep em coming.

  • got the point man,but can i ask you how to make the surface a little wavy?

only modifying the plane(in this case,is there a fast way to do it?) or there's an another way?

  • I am completely new to the Maya world.

    I have some questions..

After modeling something, can you texture it and even animate the model?

  • Hi man, I'm trying to do the connection "input3D (n)" on both things and it doesn't show input3D(n), just default and other... can you help me?? I want to do that efect SOOOOOO BAD!! you're awesome!

  • Thanks a heap 3DMacDaddy, i was so stuck on creating a decent water effect and this completely resolved my issues. Your tutorials are very clear, concise and 100% relevant. Thanks again.

  • Hey can you slow down for us retards.

  • Comment removed

  • what image is it?

  • Awesome Blossom!! Just what I needed for my project

  • hey that was very nice i like the looks of the water. there is a tutorial for the lume shader in studio max, woudl you be able to do soemk tutorials on how to create this effet in maya.

just search lume shaders or soem thign liek that on the area website to see what im talking about.

  • dude are you on a hurry?...

  • Horrible tutorial check out mine instead

  • awesome can this be animated as well?

or will the cube look weird when the water touches with it

  • does it work in an animation?

  • Ok a couple of things..

Good video it seems like you know what your doing and all but if its going to be a tutorial you have to explain what your doing so the viewer knows what he/she's doing and to use it in there own way.

  • this didnt work for me i dont know why....when i do my enviroment ball it doesnt even give me that 3d placement node that automatically connects to it

  • whats up with the fact that it has 3d n in the a+-? i dont have that showing up... do i create that through ther other? if i do, what do i choose. i have 2009

  • you are amazing!

    Thank you so much.

    = )

  • your great thank you. i havnt looked at your channel yet but if you could have a tutorial on animating the water as well from that point that would be awesome.thanks again im actually going to subscribe to you! also subscribe to me if you want a caricature done of you.

  • even though i just got maya today and this guys speed and skill confused the hell out of me, the tutorial was still great, these videos aren't for maya beginners, there for people with plenty of experience with a solid knowledge of the programs features. brilliant work MacDaddy, but still maybe a little slower XD

  • Nice Turterial !! thanks for this

BUT I have a problem with draging file & fractal into A+/- , there don't have optiion [1],[0] like turterial. Could anyone tell me why?

    and I use maya 2009

  • I spent hours and hours in hyper shade trying to make my water look descent.

It still looks shit, in 6 minutes you put it to shame.

Thank you so so much, not only have you taught me about the fluid effect. You taught displacement maps !

Very very well done, hats off to you kind sir.

  • nice tutorial thanks

  • Holy jebus your fast ! 30clicks in 7seconds

  • excellent video, even though it was very quick it was very clear. well done mate ;)

  • this is absoultly emazing ....:)

  • Very nice tutorial and a nice effect.

Nice work, the only problem is i tend to agree with the few people who spoke up regarding the speed of the tutorial for the inexperienced users or "n00bs" as MFoxcat inconsiderately worded it.

The point of a tutorial is to inform and teach people how to do something, not prove you can do it in the fastest possible time, a little more info on what you are actually doing would go a long way :)

Nice work and thanx for uploading.

  • how i conect it in maya 2010?

  • When I drag the file1 into the +/- average tool, I don't get the option to add it to + or -

    Can anyone help??

  • TerrorVisual is right. Slow down abit, be more informative about what exactly your doing, and this is a great tutorial. Ive been using Maya for over 5 years now, and I found this abit difficult to follow...

  • cool! thanks

  • When I middle mouse on file it doesnt give me input 3d, what should i do?

  • hold it down

  • agree. There is no 3d input for me either..

  • So i did this. Selected A +/-. At input 3d in the attributes, add new item. then middle-mouse dragged file to A-/+ and select others. They i went with selecting Outcolor in the left box and input3d (0) in the right one. And same with fractal but to (1).

Not 100% sure if its correct though.

  • an Excellent tutorial thx

  • This is easy to follow if you know maya. If not, you should search maya for beginners. If you are a game artist, you should know where to find images.. Try Google images, search wather, or whatever you want.. Use your brain.

  • i agree. hes not fast, ppl r just n00bs XD

  • Comment removed

  • if you don't like the video, don't watch it

i followed it nice and easy

  • I'm noob at all this, but I found this tutorial easy to follow, with good results.

  • Woeful.

If you use an image, you might like to advise the viewer on where they could get/how they can make a similar image. You might also like to slow down and actually read out the settings you go for in the end. I'm an artist for a games developer and i found this difficult to follow.

  • holy shit slow down speedy Gonzalez i can't understand your slur.

  • you watched too many cartoons. lmao!

  • Comment removed

  • need more details and try talking slower ... most of us r newbys.... :D

  • It's not a pro level tutorial. but it works just as well. thanks.

  • What Image did you use?

  • What it looks like the image is what you want to be reflected in the water.

  • Im starting a channel on IRC part of the FreedNode network so we can get together and chat has 3D artists

whether you use Blender,Maya,Lightwave,Max, XSI, Cinema 4D or Modo!

    IRC :

    Network : Freenode

    Channel : 3DArt

  • What exactly is Maya and blender and are they free? I think i may like to start teaching myself to use this where can i get it?

  • @3DMacDaddy mate i've done everything and yet the plane looks like it's thinfoil can you send the the image you loaded from the file thank you

  • nice but there is a shader called ocean shader. much simpler

  • you teach way too fast lol

  • demn good. thanks for posting b

  • Great tutorial, but:

how can we do it in maya 2009? i can't drag & drop nodes in hypershade simply...

  • Yes you can. Just use the middle mouse button to drag...

  • yeah i know that...i mean i can't bound nodes like in this tutorial...

  • From which node to which?

  • you can by holding middle mouse ;\

  • awesome thanks for the upload :D

  • best part is quick with the details, and points out alot on the way.

  • Thanks. Nice tutorial!

  • He's using Maya 2008..if you are using maya 2009 it will not work the same way when you middle mouse click and drag...so if you have 8...save your file ...go to 8 and hit ignore verison open up the scene again and then cont. the tutorial

  • hey how do u get the 3d input n thing when u middle mouse click and drag onto A+/-

  • cool thank you , nice shader. Works great. For the texture I just used a satellite image from NASA, showing the mississippi delta. That worked fine :) Found it at nasaimages org

  • What is the image you upload? apart from that, great vid.

  • nice effect, how would you animate this like you talked about?

  • Yes very nice effect.

I also want to know that, how do you animate the fractual node?

  • DUDE u are amazing! had to subscribe to u and yes i agree with Isferd love the fast pace talking!!!!! i hate tutorials when they go slow.

  • Love your fast talking!... thnx!

  • Thanx man, great help 4 a beginner !!!!!

  • Please post your computer config, because I have a dual core CPU 2.80GHz, 1GB DDRII, GeForce 5200FX... and I've followed the instructions of the tutorial ... I've clicked the render button 30mins ago and it's still rendering.....

  • you need at least 2GB DDR2 ram and better graphic card. ur Cpu is pretty good. i suggest you read the requirement on the maya box.

  • yeah ur kilin ur pc with that ram

let it breath upgrade to 4 if possible

  • Thanks Mac Daddy, need some water tips for my demo reel, doing some Tea using an IBL and MIA X shader with coloured refraction.

  • some of my options are missing when I try to drag my file node onto the +/- average node. I can't get the right result coz of it. any suggestions?

  • im having the same problem. im not sure how to solve it yet. any help would be appreciated

  • Well i found a way to work around my average node issue where the options weren't showing up. in 2009 it seems to be kinda broken so i reinstalled 08 and did the shader there. if you have that option i would recommend it. i googled for an answer and no one seems to have a solution that does not involve scripting which i am unfamiliar with.

  • very god! in portuguese you have?

  • Comment removed

  • cool tutorial, even though u can just add an ocean. ;)

anyway I wondered if its possible to write in Maya, and if so, how?

  • Great tutorial! I can now enhance my scenes by applying this. Thanks a lot!

  • dude have been subscribe u cause u teach me a good btw ur video is very good and not to boring like the other video that just bla bla bla bla lolz Subs u man

  • What is the picture of that you loaded in?

  • yeaaa i like your delivery

  • cool

  • i like your tutorials thx

  • Dude! Totally cool tutorials, but for the beginner in Maya it doesnt help too much. I've just learnt the basics....but I notice your setup is custom to mine. And I dont have a mouse to drag everything so nicely. If you can make a more simple explain and explain what things do a lil better

  • His setup is pretty standard.

  • Good tutorial! big up!

  • man i want to learn how to model a hand in maya

  • Thank you! very useful tutorial and nicely made video.. big up!

  • I'm so thankful for this Tutorial!!!

  • Your tutorials are awesome !

  • First Comment! YAYA!
