I have a question, maybe you could make another tutorial or have a simple answer to my solution. ^^; I'm wondering how you would go about animating the water and maybe having water interactions with other objects. Nice looking water though.
I would like to know why you would use a shader like this when you could use the ocean shader that's in Maya. Is this more accurate looking for stills and the Ocean shader is better for animation ?
Decent tutorial, thanks. I'd suggest explaining the "why" along with the steps. Why add the photo? Why add the +/- node, etc.Was a bit fast in places, but otherwise good. Cheers!
@ComposedBaZ just gonna share what i did for a little animation.. this is one of the ways and just mix other techniques you know.. you can apply a wave deformer.. and adjust amplitude (how big the waves are) then key the offset (you'll see when you try this).. also on the fractal node.. check the "Animated" option on the fractal attributes and key the Time
@Gynejas13 Well the simple answer is that maya is more complex and 3ds max is for noobies lol. 3DS Max is for Arch-Viz and maya is for cg and animation
Hi man, first of all thanks for the tutorial. Unfortunatedly it didnt work out for me. The image I used was one of a blue sky with clouds and a sun (fabiovisentin-dot-com/photography/photo/25/cloudy-sky-with-sun-dispersing-cloudsdsc03863-2.jpg) with a high resolution, but it still appear somewhat low resolution. And the results are crappy.
dosent wrk for me on mya 2009 when i drag the file or fractal on average operation is sum only it dosent connect i cant c option input 3d if i add in them i cant connect
If you look in the Attribute Editor with the node selected, look at the 'Operation' drop-down list and see that it's set to "Sum". Since he doesn't change this, it's just adding the 2 colors from 'Fractal' and 'File' together.
Its a really great outcome and tutorial... the effect looks nice and its easy as well. But I cudn't get the A+- hypershade thing. What does it do basically??
n do u have any tutorials on water animation.. like waves or splashes??
Hi man, I'm trying to do the connection "input3D (n)" on both things and it doesn't show input3D(n), just default and other... can you help me?? I want to do that efect SOOOOOO BAD!! you're awesome!
Thanks a heap 3DMacDaddy, i was so stuck on creating a decent water effect and this completely resolved my issues. Your tutorials are very clear, concise and 100% relevant. Thanks again.
hey that was very nice i like the looks of the water. there is a tutorial for the lume shader in studio max, woudl you be able to do soemk tutorials on how to create this effet in maya.
just search lume shaders or soem thign liek that on the area website to see what im talking about.
Good video it seems like you know what your doing and all but if its going to be a tutorial you have to explain what your doing so the viewer knows what he/she's doing and to use it in there own way.
this didnt work for me i dont know why....when i do my enviroment ball it doesnt even give me that 3d placement node that automatically connects to it
whats up with the fact that it has 3d n in the a+-? i dont have that showing up... do i create that through ther other? if i do, what do i choose. i have 2009
your great thank you. i havnt looked at your channel yet but if you could have a tutorial on animating the water as well from that point that would be awesome.thanks again im actually going to subscribe to you! also subscribe to me if you want a caricature done of you.
even though i just got maya today and this guys speed and skill confused the hell out of me, the tutorial was still great, these videos aren't for maya beginners, there for people with plenty of experience with a solid knowledge of the programs features. brilliant work MacDaddy, but still maybe a little slower XD
Nice work, the only problem is i tend to agree with the few people who spoke up regarding the speed of the tutorial for the inexperienced users or "n00bs" as MFoxcat inconsiderately worded it.
The point of a tutorial is to inform and teach people how to do something, not prove you can do it in the fastest possible time, a little more info on what you are actually doing would go a long way :)
TerrorVisual is right. Slow down abit, be more informative about what exactly your doing, and this is a great tutorial. Ive been using Maya for over 5 years now, and I found this abit difficult to follow...
So i did this. Selected A +/-. At input 3d in the attributes, add new item. then middle-mouse dragged file to A-/+ and select others. They i went with selecting Outcolor in the left box and input3d (0) in the right one. And same with fractal but to (1).
This is easy to follow if you know maya. If not, you should search maya for beginners. If you are a game artist, you should know where to find images.. Try Google images, search wather, or whatever you want.. Use your brain.
If you use an image, you might like to advise the viewer on where they could get/how they can make a similar image. You might also like to slow down and actually read out the settings you go for in the end. I'm an artist for a games developer and i found this difficult to follow.
He's using Maya 2008..if you are using maya 2009 it will not work the same way when you middle mouse click and drag...so if you have 8...save your file ...go to 8 and hit ignore verison open up the scene again and then cont. the tutorial
cool thank you , nice shader. Works great. For the texture I just used a satellite image from NASA, showing the mississippi delta. That worked fine :) Found it at nasaimages org
Please post your computer config, because I have a dual core CPU 2.80GHz, 1GB DDRII, GeForce 5200FX... and I've followed the instructions of the tutorial ... I've clicked the render button 30mins ago and it's still rendering.....
Well i found a way to work around my average node issue where the options weren't showing up. in 2009 it seems to be kinda broken so i reinstalled 08 and did the shader there. if you have that option i would recommend it. i googled for an answer and no one seems to have a solution that does not involve scripting which i am unfamiliar with.

How would you go about adding a small bit of animation to this?
ComposedBaZ 8 months ago 8
@ComposedBaZ You could replace the fractals by similar evoluted (animated) fractals made in a program like after effects.

Whats the difference between Maya and 3ds max?
Gynejas13 9 months ago
@Gynejas13 Well the simple answer is that maya is more complex and 3ds max is for noobies lol. 3DS Max is for Arch-Viz and maya is for cg and animation
megaearplugger 8 months ago
@Gynejas13
both are good but I have found max easier to use because it is more "auto"
but maya is better, although the learning curve is a bit steeper, I have more satisfaction creating things with maya than by max
Maya also gives more control over your model and for me that is good
