I can garantee you that driving like that, makes the fuel consumption around 18/19 litres. I drive one that is limited to 280km/h and flat out it drinks a lot of gas

7th gear just reliefed the pressure from that engine - I think all vehicles should have at least 6 gears - it would lower carbon emmisions

and with a good balance of gearing in the transmission and final drive it could provide both less emissions and consumption but also more rapid responce off the line. 1,2,3,4 as under-drive, 5th as direct-drive and 6th and 7th as over-drive seems to be ideal.
